I can’t remember what I was thinking when I put this together. It was part therapy; in letting everyone know about Ethan and part; “Will I look like a fool if no one jumps on board”. After 58 donations totaling $6,150.48 the latter of the two thoughts is a long lost memory.
I can’t express how grateful I am for the out reach of generosity from this amazing community.
For those curious about Ethan, he is doing A OK. He just had his 6 week check up at the Jimmy Fund Clinic and got a clean bill of health. Everyday he is building more and more strength. This past Independence Day weekend at Cape Cod his energy level was right on par with his brother and sister. Swimming, miniature golf, bike riding, he couldn’t get enough.
The countdown to the ride is now less then a month away. I am so ready. I look forward to documenting as much of the event as possible.

299 ‘active’ Lotus blogs updated hourly, what it means.
Tue, Sep 30th 2008 8:07p Yancy Lent There was a lot of talk about a month back about getting to the 300 blog mark on Planet Lotus. It is an exciting milestone but that number when it is reached only means that there is 300 ‘active’ blogs checked on an hourly basis. Over the past year there have been many sites dropped and active is the most common reason. One of the services I offer with the sites is the knowledge that the blogs listed are relevant, active and information that Loti would enjoy reading.

Why Facebook is moving past Linkedin as my favorite Social Website.
Tue, Aug 26th 2008 9:39p Yancy Lent For the last couple years Linkedin has been a great way to link up with people I’ve worked or work with. The treasure I find is both the syncing and the permanence of the sync. I’ll have their contact info no matter which country, job or cell phone number they move to down the road, of course with-in reason, they could remove their account.

Tue, Aug 12th 2008 10:32p Yancy Lent I really enjoy reading posts from the Lotus community regarding thoughts on Twitter. The latest is from Andrew Pollack. I side with about half the post. Tue, Feb 26th 2008 5:13p Yancy Lent My head is spinning from all the excitement in the Lotus air. The short lived post Lotusphere lull came to an abrupt end with the release of ND 8.0.1. and then Notes Widgets everywhere. Caucuses formed, catalogs were built and the masses started contributing at break neck speed.
Now Sametime is pop’n. Not due to a specific release or even an announcement, rather a clever re-announcement that drops names. And yes, the bleedyellow.com podcast also helped! The lowdown; Bleedyellow.com is hosting [read] Keywords: lotus

ROWLEY, MA - I set out to do 8. There were a couple things that cut this run short. In random order, the first was my legs were burning at the second loop option. With the bridge work they are doing on my running route i can’t do an out and back 8, i have to do two out and back 4’s. When i got back home after 4 my legs were burning and since i did so much ‘carb’ in take at the last nights bachelor party i figured it was a good [read] Keywords: lotus

Trying to understand Notes Widgets.
Mon, Feb 25th 2008 3:58p Yancy Lent One thing that coincided with the release 8.0.1 was a widget feeding frenzy. Every widget related blog post faired huge click through numbers at planetlotus.org. Light bulbs started firing off and within hours, Turtle Partnership / IdoNotes, OpenNTF.org and Planet Lotus jumped in to help facilitate the embracing of this exciting new feature.
But what if you don’t have 8.0.1? If you’re interested in the inner mechanics of what Notes widgets are all about, look no further then Chris Brandl [read] Keywords: lotus

Running Journal Summary - Week ending 2/17.
Sun, Feb 17th 2008 6:22p Yancy Lent A couple of months ago I started this blog and set it as my default home page; yancylent.com and moved my running log back to yancylent.com/running/. This was all well and good until I recently got back into running. I am now struggling with how to combine them.
I think for now I’ll post a summary of the week on Sundays. This way I can keep my running log which I’ve been keeping for years intact. I like having the blog up front. I would love to integrate the two but for now that’s not goin [read] Keywords: database

Mitch goes beyond his choices and presents all the different implementation options, i.e., db flavors, directory integration, etc. It’s a great introduction to this exciting and very MODERN offering from Lotus.
If you’re interested in taking a peek under the covers, do check his post out!
Now the story behind the story. Mitch starts his post expalaining how it came to be. Now my side of t [read] Keywords: connections

Ben Langhinrichs' "Help bloggers decide what to write about" idea...
Wed, Feb 13th 2008 3:56p Yancy Lent From the moment Ben expressed this idea at the Blogger BOF I was on board; for the simple reason that I struggle for things to blog about. I could blog about planet lotus all day but that would bore the piss out of everyone. Having a place to go to bat around blogging ideas would be fantastic…
Eiher the blogger could float an idea he/she was thinking about, or a non-blogger could post a topic he/she would like to see. Quickly, the community could give feedback on whether that was interest [read] Keywords: lotus

18.2% of the weekday blog posts are unrelated to Lotus.
Mon, Feb 11th 2008 11:18a Yancy Lent The improvements i’ve done to the planetlotus.org keyword filter shows that over the past 60 days only 18.2% of the weekday blog posts are unrelated to Lotus. Given the new lower number I’ve changed the default weekday view to unfiltered. You will still have the option to view the site filtered, simply click on the half circle icon in the top nav bar.
I hope this clears up the confusion it caused, now all posts will be viewable, tagged with the option to filter.

How to force a wrap in an html table with PHP.
Tue, Feb 5th 2008 5:59p Yancy Lent Let’s say you have a long url that’s blowing out the width of your small table, don’t look to html or css to solve this problem. Use wordwrap function.
$title = $myrow[”title”];
$newtitle = wordwrap($title, 28, “”, 1);
Thank you Amadeus at dreamincode.net
This also starts my new blogging approach. I had to read through 5 long discussion threads which included flame wars on the html spec before I got to this golden data nugget. The approach is simple. [read] Keywords: blogging

SnTT: @Unique. Everything you ever wanted to know.
Thu, Jan 31st 2008 1:35p Yancy Lent I’ve had this for almost 10 years now. It came from an internal Lotus source back when I worked there as a developer. I took the examples out so its a partial document. For the record it was flagged ‘Public’ when I obtained it. I have removed the 2 paragraphs that were marked . If I can loose my house over this, please someone let me know asap and i will take it down.

The most popular planetlotus.org FAQ. Where’s the feed?
Wed, Jan 30th 2008 9:09a Yancy Lent I’ve been struggling with this question since day one. What’s worse; every day I come up with a new reason. Here is where the problems start; I give out the reason de-jour, the one on my mind and never all of them. So what better way to air them all…
Feel free to quell my feelings on the matter but the truth is I don’t see a feed anytime in the near future.
*. This site replaced my 81 Lotus blog feeds and may have replaced a lot of yours. I feel it goes against the very premise that [read] Keywords: lotus

My run-in with Luis Suarez
Sun, Jan 27th 2008 9:44p Yancy Lent First a little background. Luis and I had emailed back and forth about Twitter and Planet Lotus a couple weeks if not days before the start of Lotusphere. I had also been doing a lot of reading of his tweets and blog entries, suffice it to say, he was one of the many I was excited to meet at Lotusphere this year.
So there we are, a group of us waiting next the beer stand at Islands of A., waiting for the other half of our larger group to get off the Hulk. I turn to throw something away and see [read] Keywords: lotus

Saying hello to Bloggers at Lotusphere…
Sun, Jan 20th 2008 5:14p Yancy Lent I’ve been on the phone with the Lotusphere organizers since I arrived to my room at the Dolphin. I’m trying to get access to the RFID system (RFID’s are stickered to our badges) so I can link all of the bloggers at planetlotus.org. I then plan to link that info to the google maps api and post it on the mobile.planetlotus.org site…. The process will be like this… if you are viewing the mobile site and a blogger comes into your range you will get alerted, the alert will be in the form th [read] Keywords: lotusphere

BleedYellow.com, the Good and Bad
Fri, Jan 18th 2008 10:23p Yancy Lent Let’s start with the Bad. The timing! Great for getting the word out, bad for those of us that can’t play because we’re racing to get to Orlando!
The Good… what an understatement. The site is amazing in so many ways.

Note To Myself - Don’t kill Greg
Sun, Jan 13th 2008 9:47p Yancy Lent Greg’s post was very timely.
Sure, mobile.planetlotus.org looks great on my Palm. But you know what? When some poor, unsuspecting soul clicks through to this site, it looks like . . . well, let’s just say that this site isn’t optimized for a handheld. Up until now, I was fine with it the way that it is, as the stats weren’t pushing me to do anything about it.

Monster.com: Find your own path. Your calling is calling.
Sun, Jan 13th 2008 9:16p Yancy Lent Monster.com doesn’t seem to put out that many commercials but when they do they’re on target and hit home. In their newest campaign; to me, they once again nail it. The focus this time is our routine of getting to work. They don’t focus so much on the auto pilot behavior that we all exhibit instead, how we seem to do it as if on ‘trapped’ on rails. We are locked into the commute as apposed to willing knowing participants.
The spot is easy on the eyes and the music sublet so as [read] Keywords:

Another reason to leave this site… enjoy the pictures
Thu, Jan 10th 2008 9:39p Yancy Lent The new window randomly picks from the 1,241 flickr photos I was able to pull into the system using a yahoo flickr pipe. It’s essentially a search of lotusphere2005, 06 and 07 tagged photos. I plan to do something more chronological as the new lotusphere2008 pictures start arriving via public feeds. Not sure if i’ll get to this before Lotusphere.
So the question… Keep it up after Lotusphere? To distracting? Let me know when the novelty wears thin. [read] Keywords: lotus

Blog Widget: Related posts
Fri, Jan 4th 2008 2:32p Yancy Lent Declan Lynch just emailed me what I think is an idea so cool I had to pass it along.
Basically the idea is that you could optionally pass into the widget some ‘Tags’ and instead of the widget returning the latest posts it would return the latest posts with similar tags.
The widget would obviously apply only to the post page.
Look for it soon. [read] Keywords: lotus

Lotusphere 2008 and Twitter
Thu, Jan 3rd 2008 9:36a Yancy Lent I’m looking for the best way to promote the blogging community’s twitter at Lotusphere. I initially thought the Lotusphere Twitter account would do this, and maybe that is its mission, but it looks to be a handful of twitter-ers tweeting to everyone else. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
What I propose is allowing anyone with a blog posted here to either send me, or post as a comment; their twitter url / twitter rss feed and they will be included in a Twitter View off the main page.
