This fantastic quote arrived in my MS Technet newsletter just a moment ago (emphasis mine): Hi all, What can I say but WOW! The UK launch of Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008 and Visual Studio 2008 took place last week and it was incredible to see 3,000 IT professionals and developers in one place. I have to say I think my favourite part of the day was the fantastic community area that included Swagily Fortunes and Who Wants to be a Swagillionaire! The other highlight was the attendee who got a little too comfortable on the bean bags whilst watching one of the streamed sessions, as I am sure I heard him snoring.
Mmmm, try explaining your attendance at this "business-focused event" to your boss after he reads that ;-) |

Is your organisation ready to enter Social Media? Really?
Thu, Nov 27th 2008 9:16a Stuart McIntyre Many organisations are looking at the success of Facebook, Twitter and other Web2.0/Social Media sites and thinking they must get involved. Well, as we know, it isn't always as easy as that, particularly for the more mainstream "traditional" businesses. Mitch Joel takes a look at why some organisations are failing with this effort, and comes up with some questions you might want to ask:Here are the bigger questions your organization needs to be asking before entering these channels: - Ar [read] Keywords: community

Lest we forget...
Wed, Nov 12th 2008 7:59a Stuart McIntyre My father-in-law is very engaged in the political discussions around the UK's loss of sovereignty to the EU. This is his post for today:"The European Union has achieved the great dream of the Great war generation," President Sarkozy said today at Verdun No, no, no. Their blood was not shed for this. The great War generation was fighting for freedom from tyranny. The European Union eats into that hard fought for freedom, tiny bit by tiny bit on a daily basis, with the support of our poli [read] Keywords: |

Partial feeds are the work of the devil
Tue, Oct 14th 2008 4:09p Stuart McIntyre As you can see, I sit on the fence on this one! I love RSS feeds - they rock. Whether it's for aggregation, or for mobile or disconnected access, RSS feeds are a great way to get the latest info. Does Notes break the W3C standard for web links?
Fri, Oct 10th 2008 1:00a Stuart McIntyre As you have probably spotted, I use Domino Blog for my blogs. When composing a post, I add any links using Create/Hotspot/Link Hotspot. Now I am not 100% sure that this the recommended approach, but it does the job nicely, and saves hand-coding them. However, when sorting out some RSS feed validation issues this morning I noticed that the links added are not enclosed in double quotes, e.g.: It is my belief that hrefs should always be enclosed, and the W3C page relating to this tag s [read] Keywords: domino

Lotus URLs redux
Fri, Oct 10th 2008 12:56a Stuart McIntyre You may remember that I had a bit of a moan at the inconsistencies in Lotus' URLs earlier on this week - lotus.com/{product} and www.lotus.com/{product} going to different places etc. Well, I've just posted an entry to the Symphony Blog and another inconsistency hit me - all the info re: Lotus Symphony is at... symphony.lotus.com. It has been interesting work, challenging for sure, and I definitely bear the scars. As ever, there is a good mix of well-documented IBM information, great third-party posts and HOWTOs, and a load of undocumented stuff that is only found by trying, testing and failing! How connected are you?
Fri, Sep 12th 2008 4:31a Stuart McIntyre Seeing as it is universally recognised that all us Lotus bloggers are ASWs (!), you'll be wanting to know how's you're rated as far as being "connected" in the community, right? Well, at least in the Twitter world, that's now possible, albeit in a rather simplistic way. Enter, twitter.grading.com. Simply type in your Twitter ID (or someone elses), and you get an indication of how they rank for "influence". E.g. my ID gives the following:Twitter Grade: 80 - Rank #3,453 out of 17,554 The T [read] Keywords: lotus

Competition for Quickr?
Tue, Sep 9th 2008 3:09a Stuart McIntyre In searching for some info on Lotus Quickr this morning, I came across this sponsored ad: A couple of things sprang to mind: 1) I haven't come across many Google Adwords ads that are so directly for a competitive product. It's an interesting strategy, that I am sure produces variable results. Perhaps getting Lotus Notes/Quickr/Connections into the search results for Microsoft Exchange/Sharepoint etc. might bear fruit? 2) ThoughtFarmer is new to me - it looks an good solution from the [read] Keywords: collaboration

Connect, Collaborate, Innovate
Mon, Sep 8th 2008 3:59a Stuart McIntyre This new Lotus strategy brief (entitled 'Build your collaboration strategy with IBM') has just been published, attempting to explain why organisations should look to combine collaborative technology with cultural change in order to develop an IT strategy that delivers real business results. It starts by explaining that innovation is essential in today's marketplace, and that collaboration inside and outside the firewall helps to drive it:Innovation improves business outcomes, and successf [read] Keywords: collaboration

Lotus URLs redux
Mon, Sep 8th 2008 3:59a Stuart McIntyre You may remember that I had a bit of a moan at the inconsistencies in Lotus' URLs earlier on this week - lotus.com/ and www.lotus.com/ going to different places etc. Well, I've just posted an entry to the Symphony Blog and another inconsistency hit me - all the info re: Lotus Symphony is at... symphony.lotus.com. That is the address that is coded into the site and is used in all marketing materials. So, the obvious question arises! Why can't IBM use this as the standard for all its Lot [read] Keywords: connections

Give us back our lotus.com!
Thu, Sep 4th 2008 9:57a Stuart McIntyre Up until very recently, any URL that started lotus.com (or www.lotus.com) would be redirected to http://www-01.ibm.com/software/lotus/ and then the rest of the url appended, e.g. http://lotus.com/quickr became http://www-01.ibm.com/software/lotus/products/quickr/ (or http://www-some strange random number.ibm.com/impossible/to/remember/url/quickr for short) This was true for all the major Lotus products. Interesting Connections technote
Fri, Aug 29th 2008 6:20a Stuart McIntyre This Lotus Connections Technote was pointed out by Handly Cameron on Twitter:Question What procedure should be followed when an employee leaves an organization where IBM Lotus Connections is implemented? Should those users be deleted from the Profiles, Dogear, Activities, Blogs applications? Answer Once a person is entered into the Connections system they should never be removed. Doing so may invalidate the data's consistency. For example, In Activities, the log for who did what and when t [read] Keywords: connections

The PlanetLotus effect
Thu, Aug 14th 2008 3:46a Stuart McIntyre Volker has been having fun with PlanetLotus over the past day or so, pointing out in the comments that:People tend to follow the herd. Large numbers lead to larger numbers, or in a swarm effect: more fish. And "more fish" does matter, since you are not writing this for yourself, or do you? A site like Digg (or Connections for that matter) leads more people to "popular" links. Making a link appear more popular leads to more people following that link, which ultimately means more readers. Pimping [read] Keywords: connections

Wed, Aug 13th 2008 11:29p Stuart McIntyre The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW to its friends) is reporting that Apple's market capitalisation has overtaken that of Google and is closing in on IBM:The current market capitalization of Apple is US$159.37 billion, squeaking by Google's market cap of US$157.56 billion. Next in Apple's sights ought to be the old man on the block, IBM. Their current market value is around US$170 billion.
