SHOCK!!!! HORROR!!!! REVELATION!!! Bill Buchan is Welsh and NI Toy Tractor Collectors go mad for Billy Ray Sirus and chicken curry
Sun, Nov 30th 2008 7:52p Steve McDonagh As I mentioned in the last post Bill Buchan PDF (Portly Domino Fellow) and fellow GONAD came to DYM's stomping ground in the frozen foggy tundra of North Derry. I recommended he stay in the Magherabouy Hotel, Portrush a hotel used by my company when we have folk visiting from the 4 corners of the coorporation. Thu, Nov 27th 2008 5:52a Steve McDonagh All Notes-ers I have just had a chat with a Canadian chap Gary Walsh from DLI who have a very interesting product called Docova I must add at this point that this post is not an advert or endorsement! However I did have a few "wow" moments when Gary Demo'ed it for me on Tuesday. It is a Document Management System that is back ended by Notes NSFs and can be accessed thru the Notes Client and from a browser. I have become to busy to care.
Wed, Nov 26th 2008 7:52p Steve McDonagh Gentle reader , I had a bit of a shock today. It happened when I was listening to one of the podcasts I download weekly. A fine program called "Everyday Ethics" produced by the BBC and available here. It looks at local Northen Ireland and World problems with a Christian perspective but is accessible even for an apostate heathen like myself. One of the articles on this weeks show was "Do journalists believe in poverty" and from this topic came my shock. To precis the questions the article poses [read] Keywords: community

Coding for the Mouse Wheel in Javascript
Tue, Nov 11th 2008 7:52p Steve McDonagh This is quite an esoteric post for those JS heads out there ... how do you code for the user using the mouse wheel? I was working on Name Picker V2.0.0 tonight and one of the "improvements" is that there will be both cursor key and mouse key support on the new format list (which is basically a vertical array of [div]s rather than a select object. Most of the default form objects that support scroll bars will have mouse support. But what about [li] or some interesting nested [div]s or a [table] [read] Keywords: document

Rememberance Sunday
Sun, Nov 9th 2008 7:55p Steve McDonagh It is rememberance sunday here in the UK and on the way to a family gathering in the south of the province and there was a programe on the radio which took my attention. Thu, Nov 6th 2008 7:53p Steve McDonagh I recently got two messages on OpenNTF informing me that there was a bug in the multiple selection section code of my AJAX Name Picker and after some checking indeed there is! I had made a fairly minor change in a bit of what I was "sure" was unrelated JS and managed to duplicate all the data in an array. So sure was I that it was fine I didn't test all 3 types of name picker ~hangs head in shame~ I really should know better! Rolls Royce help test US high speed trains - with chickens
Sat, Oct 25th 2008 7:58p Steve McDonagh Scientists at Rolls Royce built a gun specifically to launch dead chickens at the windshields of airliners and military jets all travelling at maximum velocity. The idea is to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields. American engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the windshields of their new high speed trains. Arrangements were made, and a gun was sent to the American engineers. Here is a tip that will allow your link to pass into the lands of the Redmond gnomes unmolested with bugger all fiddling about. Yes I know you have do it with HTML mail, but sometimes life is just to short. Put your URL in quotes like this "" and M$ will leave it be when it arrives. Thanks to a very nice M$ techie Eric for the tip! [read] Keywords: notes

Fri, Aug 22nd 2008 6:29p Steve McDonagh Gentle reader, Back to the wonderful geeky world of Javascript , it has been a while since the last post in this series, I do apologise.. here is a link to the thread in case you missed the excitement that was parts 1- 7, In this post I am going to look at the sometimes overlooked methods and properties that come as part an parcel of every object you create in JS. As I mentioned before every object you create is a "child" of the Object class and as such in inherits all the parent's methods and [read] Keywords: javascript

SPF Finances (France) Choose Notes! Big Win Well done IBM!
Fri, Aug 22nd 2008 5:18a Steve McDonagh I see from my news feed that SPF Finances France choose Notes for their messaging infracstructure. 35,000 bums in 6000 sites..Way to go Lotus!.. For not Franophones here is my appalling translation ... With 35.000 “mailboxes” to deploy from here mid-December, the SPF Finances undoubtedly becomes the largest user of the Lotus Notes transport in our country. It was after having installed 6 years of the electronic letter-boxes to each civil servant (29.000 people) and office (6.000 sites), ...[ [read] Keywords: domino

Reading a CSV attachment in a server agent on Domino running on an iSeries
Thu, Aug 21st 2008 12:19p Steve McDonagh Oh Gentle readers here is the solution to a bit of a quandary that hit me the other day. We have and agent that runs on a windows machine that reads a CSV sent out as an email by another system (non-domino) to a Domino mail-in database. A Server "On arrival of New Mail" agent runs , detaches the file, opens it , reads it and acts on the data inside the file on a record by record basis. Now this all works a treat on a Windows server, but when we tried to move it to a iSeries the agent just grun [read] Keywords: agent

Bog Snorkeling 101
Wed, Aug 20th 2008 3:59p Steve McDonagh Gentle reader I was most disappointed to discover early this evening that the ancient and honorable sport of Bog Snorkeling is not more widely known. I suppose I should not really be surprised. Year after year our pleas for inclusion into the summer Olympic Games are met with either a polite "no" or the more usual "ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!" ~sigh~ but we bog snorkelers are made of stern and hardy stuff and suffer the slings and arrows of a disbelieving public. So for those of you that do not [read] Keywords: application

An Interesting use of the postopen event of the application
Tue, Aug 19th 2008 3:59p Steve McDonagh I was faced with an interesting programming issue today which was solved with the seldom used PostOpen event that you can find on the database (sorry application). You can find this in the Other section of the application, then the Database Resources and then Database Script . The even is found inside this section and gets triggered immediately the Application has reached a restful state in the UIworkspace. This is an event that in our Org is seldom used, so seldom I thought I would blog [read] Keywords: lotusscript

Useful JS script to get around IE's inability to do getElementsByName properly
Fri, Aug 15th 2008 6:40a Steve McDonagh If you need to use the JS function getElementsName() which works perfectly in all other browsers except that f**king slough of programming despond that is IE. Try this. It basically overrides the getElementsById() function with a new one that unlike the spew in IE, works! if ( /msie/i.test(navigator.userAgent) && !/opera/i.test(navigator.userAgent) ) { document.getElementsByName=function(str) { str=new String(str); var myMatches=new Array(); var allEls=document.getElementsByTagNam [read] Keywords: document

Because I don't know about it therefore it doesnt exist
Thu, Aug 14th 2008 4:39p Steve McDonagh Gentle reader I was challenged the other day by a passing "person of faith". In the summer we have have a plethora of missions one of which "New Horizon" had as a guest speaker this year Dr John Lennox Oxford mathematician and Christian apologist. This has had the side effect that we now have "people of faith" who now have a scientist who can be waved at recalcitrant heathens like my self as proof that both god exists and there is a scientist that can prove it. Now I have no great problem with [read] Keywords: google

Pleasantly Poetic Spam
Tue, Aug 12th 2008 5:43a Steve McDonagh It is not often you get a bit of spam where you look twice this one did. The bot that wrote this deserves a prize for pseudo creativity! One of their stated, on paper, there in black and white tasks is to understand the use of jargon and acronyms used by IBM. I was once been told by an IBM HW engineer that one of our System 38s "had ceased to be operational because of an AMD failure" "A what?" i replied "An AMD failure" He restated "Woz that?" Dieting Is Fun - My ARSE! (or Standing on Scales Tension Syndrome)
Fri, Aug 8th 2008 6:19p Steve McDonagh Now I am fairly close to what used to be called a "new man". I am in touch with my feminine side. I cry at some DVD's, I can iron my socks I can throw together a dinner party for 6 on the way home from work. What I am not is one of those men to whom dieting comes naturally or easily. I started on this particular spree of under-indulgence a month ago and the exercise is OK. I didn't go all out mad and join a gym. No %^$&ing chance of that! Sun, Aug 3rd 2008 3:09p Steve McDonagh I have been asked by the recently joined members what the hierarchy of GONAD is and were they fall in it. Well it is like this. The 3 Sections There are 3 sections to the Order. An OU is the lowest section where the general membership exists and they are grouped together by location. For example I am in the Belfast OU of the Order. OU's cluster together into O's For example the Belfast OU is in the Irish O of the Order. O's then are clustered in the Global GONAD Domain.
