Interesting anniversaries today - November 10th
Mon, Nov 10th 2008 11:53a Ray Bilyk The US Marine Corps were organized on this date in 1775. I've had an opportunity to meet a few marines over my lifetime, and for every Marine I've ever met, I was glad they were on our side defending our country and its interests.
Also on this date in 1969, 'Sesame Street' debuts, but for the life of me, I still can't tell you how to get there... but I keep looking (and watching)!
On a more somber note, on this date in 1975, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sinks on Lake Superior, killing 29 crewm [read] Keywords: |

SNTF: How to stop your BES from trying to access a Domino Server
Fri, Nov 7th 2008 3:54p Ray Bilyk It's been a while since I've done a 'Show-n-Tell', and I meant to do this a few weeks ago, but 'baby' happens...
One of our sites were going to have major electrical work done over the weekend, which meant that the Domino Server at that site would have to go down.
We had no problem with this, but the BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server) was going to scream that it could not access the data for those users located there. We had to find a way to prevent the BES from kicking back error after er [read] Keywords: domino

Anyone using Domino Admin client R7 in a mixed R6.5/7 environment?
Fri, Nov 7th 2008 6:51a Ray Bilyk All of our clients are R6.5 right now, but we want to start testing any changes for a possible R7 client release. There are also colleagues that are interested in getting their certifications upgraded for R7 before the end of the year.
So does anyone know of any issues with R7 clients accessing R6.5 Domino Servers? Oh, and before you ask, we are in the process of upgrading our servers to R7, but it may not be until January 2009. [read] Keywords: admin

Sun, Oct 12th 2008 10:51p Ray Bilyk Twelve years ago, I married my best friend. She has always been the one to bring me back when I'm in a real dark place. She has been the mother of my two beautiful children. In some cases, she has been simply 'my partner in crime'.

What is Baby Boy (aka TBA) Bilyk's name, and why?
Fri, Sep 19th 2008 9:49p Ray Bilyk As Jennifer and I were trying to come
up with a name, we wanted to use my father's name somewhere, but not as

It is of Latin origin, and its
meaning is "citizen of Rome". Variant of Romanus; the name of
several obscure saints and a pope. Rome was the center of the Roman Catholic
faith. In the ancient world, Roman citizenship represented an ideal sta [read] Keywords: |

UPDATE: TSM for Domino mail servers
Mon, Aug 11th 2008 9:48p Ray Bilyk Thanks to Keith Brooks, Jim Casale, Rob McDonagh, and Chuck Dean for their comments and advice on this issue, which involved a comment from Tivoli Support that stated that we had to remove Windows Terminal Services (Remote Desktop) because of issues with backing up our Domino Server with TSM. Anyone out there using TSM for Domino mail servers running on Windows?
Wed, Aug 6th 2008 3:48p Ray Bilyk We're being told by TSM Support that we cannot use Terminal Services (Remote Desktop) to remotely access our servers to perform backups and restores. The symptom is that during the backup, it would not backup what are considered to be the normal Domino database files while a server is up and running (log.nsf, names.nsf, etc.). The log indicates the error 'database is currently being used by someone else'.
I find this really hard to believe... Does anyone have any thoughts? Is anyone else out the [read] Keywords: domino

I lost a friend and a mentor today
Thu, May 29th 2008 6:20p Ray Bilyk As you grow up around the Knights of Columbus, you learn who is talking to you, and who is talking DOWN to you. Sir Knight John Pociask never talked down to me, even as a kid. When I became a Knight, he still would find a way to keep me humble. He would listen to me when I would complain about something, then he'd tell me to snap out of it. He was a friend to my family, and knew how to tell a good joke. Problem with a delegated user accessing calendar entries of a renamed user
Wed, Apr 2nd 2008 3:10p Ray Bilyk Anyone not working with Lotus Notes/Domino can ignore this blog entry. For the rest of you, I've got a problem... (Just one? Ha ha!): I have a user that moved to a different OU (via AdminP). This user had their calendar managed by someone else. For some reason, the AdminP request "Rename person in calendar entries and profiles in mail file" either didn't happen or never got requested. (The OU change occurred over 30 days ago.) I was engaged when it was discovered that the Mail file owner f [read] Keywords: adminp

Uncle-in-law in the hospital
Tue, Mar 4th 2008 6:18a Ray Bilyk My wife's uncle got rushed into the hospital this afternoon. He's had heart attacks before, but this one really took his toll. He's still in the hospital right now. We stayed there last night until after 1AM. Needless to say, after 2 nights of very little sleep (Sunday night - Monday morning was a different issue), I'm exhausted! If you could, please keep my uncle-in-law and my wife's family in your thoughts. [read] Keywords: |

A new chapter begins... TODAY!
Mon, Feb 4th 2008 6:45a Ray Bilyk On January 10th, 2008, my 'brother-in-beer', Devin Olson, posted a entry on his blog entitled "Bleeding Yellow". It explained his love of Lotus Notes and announced his new position at Lotus 911. I posted a comment on it congratulating him and lamenting my plight. I went for an interview that day for a great job, but one that was not in Lotus Notes. I felt his pain. It IS hard to find a job in Michigan in Lotus Notes/Domino. I was doing what I needed to do for my family, even if it meant leaving [read] Keywords: domino

Unlike many of you (I assume, anyway) I came back from Lotusphere with a new job. That's right, as of January 29, I have resigned my position at IBM. My new job is Vice President of R & D at Binary Tree.
Oh, and if you want to see bloggers try their hands at acting... you've got to read the comments here... I know someone (Perry Hiltz) that works for Binary Tree, and they're a great company. It's going to be neat seeing [read] Keywords: ibm

Lotusphere 2008: I hope you had the time of your life
Thu, Jan 24th 2008 9:47a Ray Bilyk I'm getting over some kind of bug. Don't stand too close...
So it ends... Another exciting Lotusphere 2008! This marks the beginning for many relationships started there. It also marks the growth of a seeds planted by Lotus in 2007. The plants that are now growing will get bigger and bigger. The roots will go deeper and deeper. We, as the gardeners, must continue to do what we can to make this garden strong and bear fruit.
It saddens me that I was not with my friends, but they kept me (and every [read] Keywords: lotus

A Lotusphere Request
Wed, Jan 23rd 2008 2:19p Ray Bilyk My daughter and I are both fighting some sort of bug. The 'stuff' (also known as Tchokies) I brought home from Lotusphere used to make her happy, so I thought that I'd throw out this request. (I figured that just telling her I asked would make her feel better.) I'm not too proud to beg, especially if it's for my daughter.
If you happen to stop by the Product Showcase or any of the Labs and you see something that would be cool for a little girl (or her daddy), grab an extra one. The Labs and Prod [read] Keywords: lotusphere

Lost in a fog
Mon, Dec 3rd 2007 9:00p Ray Bilyk It has been sooo long since I posted anything, and to be honest, I don't know why. As I sit here reading everyone else's blogs (for the first time in a while... sorry my friends) announcing that my friend Paul Mooney and the gang at Blue Wave Technology acquired my other friend Warren Elsmore and the fine folks at BE Systems, I wonder to myself, "Why do I feel so out of the loop?"
