Lotusphere 2012: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Sun, Feb 5th 2012 4:15p   Peter Presnell
Lotusphere is over for another year. 2012 was my third Lotusphere. This year was a crazy crazy week just as it had been in each of the two previous years. I had the chance to renew many treasured friendships as well as meet many people for the first time. My employer, GBS, has offices all around the world, so Lotusphere also provides a chance for me to meet face to face with a great many of the people with whom I work every day. I see signs that the event is changing. Many legends of the past n [read] Keywords: connections ibm lotus lotusphere symphony blogging community laptop mobile office social software twitter wifi

Getting The Most From Lotusphere
Tue, Jan 10th 2012 7:39p   Peter Presnell
This year will be my third Lotusphere and first IBM Connect. Compared with a great many people attending I am still a newbie. I certainly was not as well prepared as I would have like for my first (or second) Lotusphere and so I would like share a few tips of some of the many things I have learnt in my preparation for this year. The community itself exists all year round. Lotusphere is the only time in which many of us are together in the same place at the same time. RAT -- Part 2: Smoke Testing
Sun, Jan 8th 2012 9:02p   Peter Presnell
In Part 1 of this series, I provided a general summary of some of the key concepts of Rapid Application Testing. Today I would like to take a closer look at one of the more important aspects of RAT.... Smoke tests. When developing a set of test cases to test an application the most important are smoke tests. Smoke tests can mean different things to different people. For me, smoke tests are the tests you choose to run each and every time you have a new version of the software to be tested. Thu, Jan 5th 2012 6:15p   Peter Presnell
Lotusphere is now less than ten days away. The extended weather forecast for Disney World now covers the start of the big event. As the most of us in the yellowverse know, Lotusphere marks the true start of each year. 2011 the year of Get Social Do Business is drawing to an end giving way to 2012 the year of Business Made Social. Tue, Nov 29th 2011 8:25p   Peter Presnell
Welcome to the first in a new multi-part series in which I explore a range of ideas related to a style of testing I have developed for my own use at GBS I call Rapid Application Testing. Notes 8.5.3: The Notes/Domino Awakening - Part 3
Sun, Oct 16th 2011 4:09p   Peter Presnell
In part 2 of this series I covered the emergence of the social mail client and how Notes 8.5.3 is likely to be the minimum requirement for this new client. I also explored the possibility that this new client may provide access to information held in 3rd party mail clients along with other information sources. So lets now look at how Notes 8.5.3 is likely to have long term impacts on the way we develop Notes applications.... In part 1 of this series I discussed the social awakening and its relevance to the way IT products and services are increasingly being selected/demanded by a workforce empowered by the social tools that connect and inform them . The Social Mail Client – The Arrival Of Project Vulcan A lot has been said about organizations who are migrating away from Notes mail to other mail platforms. Notes 8.5.3: The Notes/Domino Awakening
Sun, Oct 9th 2011 8:42a   Peter Presnell
The IT Awakening The IT world is changing rapidly. It (IT) is no longer able to dictate the hardware or software it places on its user's desk. Many users don't even want it on their desk any more! They want (demand?) it to be on their favorite phone or tablet device. The social revolution that has lead to the overthrow of governments in the Middle East is also starting to change the IT landscape inside many organizations. New Presentation: ReplacingLotus Notes?
Mon, Sep 5th 2011 10:04a   Peter Presnell
Some time back I wrote a blog entry: Replacing Notes? Here's How It Really Goes Down. The blog article came up in discussions a few times while I was attending #auslug. I have now converted the material from a blog article into a presentation format and I am working with Stephen Wissel on the idea of converting it into a prezi format. 12 Months Later And Notes Has Never Been In Better Shape

Exactly 12 months ago today I posted this blog article. At the time I was extremely excited and proud to have been given the chance to work with a team of people I have long admired. And now 12 months later I can honestly say the opportunity has lived up to and exceeded all expectations.  No, this is not about XPages but that other design element in Notes the "PAGE".... Pages are something of an anomaly in Notes development.   They were introduced in Notes R5 along with Framesets and Outlines to add new "web"-like capabilities to the product.  Functionally, I have yet to find a single thing I can do with a Page that I can't also do with a Form.  By choosing to have a Page you are largely indicating that this design element is not intended to be associated with the crea [read] Keywords: domino dxl lotus lotusscript notes R5 xpages application applications community database development planetlotus planetlotus.org profile security

The Lotus Notes community is quite passionate about its product.  Most of us love the product we use.  For many it forms the basis for our working life.  So when we perceive a threat to that way of life it is a natural response to want to strike out at anyone else who may in some way be responsible for any angst being felt.  IBM is often the target of much of that frustration.  On occasions it is other members of the blogging community.  If I were to believe some of the blog posts, a [read] Keywords: collaboration connections domino ibm ldd lotus lotusphere notes xpages application applications blogging community development enterprise google ideajam ideajam.net interface java microsoft openntf sharepoint social software web 2.0

divMy work at Group has seen me taking a deep dive into the LotusScript Dim amp; Redim and Const statements.  They seem like fairly simple statements and yet after 30 years of Basic programming and 14 years of LotusScript programming I still learnt a few things this past week.  So for those of you still writing code with LotusScript here are some of the key concepts of these statements along with some of their more obscure features.../divdivfont color=#d3d3d3./fontbr /ollifont color=#228b22Opt [read] Keywords: domino lotus lotusscript notes planetlotus planetlotus.org profile security

Ten Commandments: Yellowverse Version
Sun, Nov 7th 2010 6:20p   Peter Presnell
As Notes developers I am sure we often feel like we are constantly being called upon to walk on water and/or part the Red Sea.  But thats OK.  With Lotus Notes we have the application development platform that allows us to perform miracles on a regular basis.  So what would happen if one day Ed Brill were to be summoned by the board at IBM and issued with a new set of rules by which we in the yellowverse should be guided.  Perhaps the new rules of engagement may go something like this.....br [read] Keywords: domino ibm lotus lotusphere notes ods xpages application bug development dojo eclipse exchange exchange google java openntf outlook sharepoint

The Power Of Notes - Part 9: Profile Documents

Its A Big Change, But Well Worth It
Mon, Nov 1st 2010 11:44p   Peter Presnell
divJust over a week ago I set of on a new journey in my life, driving my car from Los Angeles, California across to Atlanta, Georgia.  It was a four day journey, the first half of which follows the well known Route-66 from Los Angeles to Oklahoma City.  It was a great drive that gave me a chance to see some great scenery as well as reacquaint myself with the music on my iPod.  It also gave me a chance to reflect on the recent decision I had made to move out of my comfort zone as a Lotus [read] Keywords: lotus lotusscript notes ntf xpages ipod java linkedin office

The Power Of Notes - Part 8: Document Level Security

The Power Of Notes - Part 7: Undocumented Features
Tue, Oct 19th 2010 2:44p   Peter Presnell
divYet another of the many great features of Lotus Notes is the additional power (and intrigue) that comes from undocumented features that are to be found within the product.  Perhaps the best example of an undocumented feature is XPages (LOL)....   Sorry, I couldnt resist that...   Seriously, there are a number of features in Notes that IBM have chosen not to document.  This typically means they are not supported and should be used at your own risk.  But I must say I have rarely found th [read] Keywords: admin ibm lotus notes xpages database planetlotus planetlotus.org server

The Power Of Notes - Part 6: Creating New Databases
Thu, Oct 14th 2010 10:44a   Peter Presnell
div I first started using LotusScript back in 1996.  Over the past 14 years I have worked hard to try and master the language.  In that time the number of lines of code I have written would be measured in the 100,000s and quite likely has reached 1 million lines of LS code!  And yet, even after 14 years and one million lines of code I still get amazed at the power of the language as I discover new capabilities.  Amongst the many great things LotusScript provides is a collection of 77 Notes [read] Keywords: acl administration domino ibm lotus lotusscript notes notes client xpages application archive database oracle planetlotus planetlotus.org properties security server

If you are like me and your career/life is heavily invested in the success of Lotus Notes then your probably keep a mindful eye on the long-term strategy of the product upon which you rely for an income.  I am sure there has always been a quot;strategyquot; for Lotus Notes.  Its just that there have been times when it has not been clear to simple folk such as me just what that strategy might be.  Of course, there have also been times when we have doubted if a strategy exists or questioned t [read] Keywords: administration connections domino ibm inotes lotus lotusphere lotusscript notes notes client xpages application applications css db2 development eclipse google integration java javascript mobile openntf oracle planetlotus planetlotus.org server sql websphere widgets

The Power Of Notes - Part 4: Tables
