Nathan T Freeman

Just noticed on Planetlotus.org that IBM has a new Redbook out on WebSphere Transaction Cluster Facility.

WebSphere TCF must have been so-named by someone leaving for a new job at Microsoft that week.

Dear everyone in the HVAC industry...
Wed, May 2nd 2012 10:27p   Nathan T Freeman
Why is it that residential and commercial climate control systems are so fucking retarded? And yes, I used that language on purpose. They're just stupid. In an age when I can tell my phone to find songs like the one I'm listening to now and play them, and it does it brilliantly, why can't I tell my house or my office "I want it 72 degrees in this room." Right now, my home has two thermostats; one for each floor. The one downstairs is a programmable Honeywell unit that after 20 y [read] Keywords: ntf integration interface leak office

American Spring
Fri, Apr 27th 2012 6:51a   Nathan T Freeman
The American media is renowned for it's biases, whether "left" or "right." Since I have a good number of readers here from outside the US, I'm curious whether media outlets in your own countries are reporting on the gathering of tens of thousands of Americans across the continent. The US media, across the political spectrum, is totally silent about it. After Monday's post on using the lotus.notes.addins package, the mighty Ulrich Krause made an SSJS adaptation of the technique and posted it in XSnippets. Unfortunately, the license statement on my blog (CC-A) did not accurately allow him to do this, as all content posted into XSnippets must be Apache Licensed. I had a brief chat with Peter Tanner at OpenNTF.org, and told him "no problem. I'll just add a global license for all code posted on the blog." His reply... Perfect. More secret Java APIs for Domino
Mon, Apr 23rd 2012 1:41p   Nathan T Freeman
While researching some tooling last week, I found myself wondering about the Java Server Addins that have been in Domino since version 6: Changeman and ISpy. These two Java addins do some very interesting stuff focused on monitoring server availability and resource load. But what's more interesting is that the packages for them can be found in notes.jar. And it turns out that those packages offer some surprisingly useful APIs. Classes like lotus.notes.addins.JavaServerSession, lotus [read] Keywords: domino lotus notes ntf database java server

But... there are bandwidth-starving kids in Africa!
Fri, Apr 20th 2012 9:41p   Nathan T Freeman
I would have been happy to simply post the one observation about the shameful, immoral, fraudulent behavior of the lotuslearns.com blog, which uses "Yahoo Pipes with a PHP agent to garner all Posting content and provide a single source to accessing this information" (which is a wordy way of saying they copy it) but according to uber-netizen Chris Miller, Miss Smith claims that her unethical behavior started at the "US Embassy in Nigeria to mitigate bandwidth." Oh, so she's reall [read] Keywords: agent lotus ntf xpages community server

LotusLearns that stealing web content is shameful
Fri, Apr 20th 2012 3:03p   Nathan T Freeman
lotuslearns.com, a blogger.com-hosted site, is duplicating content from a wide variety of wikis and blogs in the Lotus community. Presumably this is a good way for CEO Kelley Smith to elevate search results and present herself as the source for the continually amazing content put forth by the community. Unfortunately, since she's re-publishing this information without attribution, she is not only violating basic international copyright laws, she's also being shockingly rude. Fixing Domino's LDAP Implementation
Fri, Mar 16th 2012 9:22p   Nathan T Freeman
If you're anything like me (and really, I hope you aren't,) you've integrated any number of external tools with Domino. One of the most important open standards that Domino supports is the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. LDAP is used by Sametime, Connections, Samba, Linux, Windows, Asterisk, Redmine, Subversion, Tivoli and just about every other software product ever conceived by man. And if you've used Domino as an LDAP server, you've banged your head against your keyboar [read] Keywords: connections domino ntf sametime linux openntf profile server tivoli

Do what you love....
Tue, Mar 6th 2012 10:20p   Nathan T Freeman
Malcolm Gladwell famously argues that true exceptionalism in a discipline comes from measurable input. My friend Stefan Molyneux relays the point more succinctly. I will simply try to relate it to something we all hear: "do what you love" Do you know why people are more successful when they do what they love? Because they do it more. If you love something, then it's not a chore to do it -- it's a passion. You don't resign yourself to practicing piano or painting or writing or m [read] Keywords: ntf wiki

It has long been my opinion that good software designers should understand the basic economics of trade. Ours is a highly specialized practice, and it produces an absolutely staggering surplus when we trade. But this can be very difficult to understand unless you grasp the concept of Comparative Advantage. (Understanding Asymmetrical Information is also a good idea, but let's save that for another day.) Because of the absolutely marvelous title, I stumbled upon these videos from Prof [read] Keywords: ntf
