I've admired you for a long time. You
are the father of a piece of software that has shaped nearly two decades
of my life, and I think you are one of the most brilliant thinkers ever
to work on software.
But, sir, you should be ashamed of yourself.
How can you be Chief Software Architect for a company
so afraid
of its own
software?
Shame on you, Ray.
I'll put you back on my hero list when
you resign in protest against this behavior. All Microsoft employees
should be embarrassed to be part of that organization. The process

IBM in the cloud: extst.ibm.com
Wed, Nov 19th 2008 8:13a Nathan T Freeman I know that there are a lot of hard-working
smart people at IBM, but this is absolutely ridiculous. Sametime

The Truth as I See It: Part 4
Sun, Sep 14th 2008 6:30p Nathan T Freeman In Part 1 of this series, we talked
about why
maintainable code was important,
and how it compares to other priorities in the software development cycle.
In Part 2, we talked about the
concept of code decay, not as
an effect of bad coding practices, but as an effect of changing environments.
In Part 3, we talked about the concept of how user
expectations can affect the phenomenon of decay.
In Part 4, I want to start looking at

Business Partnerships for Engineers
Sun, Sep 14th 2008 2:22p Nathan T Freeman As a software engineer, I sometimes
have to remember that the best way to explain something is to break it
down into individual logical steps, so that there's no misunderstanding
what's being said. Computers, after all, are just really fast tools
that need things described to them very specifically and very exactly so
they know what to do.
The single most powerful construct in
software languages is the conditional. If/then is the centerpoint

Spelunking in Notes 8.5 beta 2
Sun, Sep 7th 2008 8:42p Nathan T Freeman When IBM ships a public beta version, one
of the coolest consequences is that anything that's in the beta is no longer

out, I can go digging in it and see if some things are publicly exposed

So, this afternoon, I did. And

Last time, we talked about the technical
causes of code decay: underlying platform & technology changes that
make formerly good approaches obsolete. But this decay phenomenon

The Measure of Day
Tue, Aug 12th 2008 10:52a Nathan T Freeman Alan has a great post with a summary
of highlights
from Ye118wDay. One thing
not in his list was our relatively
quiet upgrade of the BleedYellow

the upgrade did not go well, and we're still working with IBM on fixing
the outstanding problems. However, there were enough cool new capabilities
that we decided not to roll back the update, but soldier on through it.
There's a reason the site has a "beta" tag, after all!

Most annoying sentence I read all day
Fri, Jun 13th 2008 4:05p Nathan T Freeman Unbelievable...
"Based on Microsoft data, we
estimate that 81 of Fortune 100 companies,
along with millions of users, use Exchange as their primary messaging and
calendaring platform." -- Terry Myerson, VP, Microsoft
I have no idea whether that number is
true. It might very well be. But can anyone tell me why they
would need to estimate? It's 100 companies. If you're
going to throw a statistic like that around, CALL THEM. Otherwise
astute readers just might notice that you [read] Keywords: calendaring

Berke Breathed on blogging -- from 1987
Thu, Jun 12th 2008 10:33a Nathan T Freeman I found some old Bloom County books
the other day, and was howling with laughter at the author's 20-year-early
prediction of the blogging phenomenon.
I think "LHPuttgrass" needs
to become a social tagging standard for when everyday schleps start talking.
hehe
(Note: there are many occasions in which
I'd categorize myself as an L.H. Puttgrass, and certainly we eventually
got more skin on HBO, in the form of Cinemax!) [read] Keywords: blogging

Why iPhone integration has to be driven by Apple
Tue, Jun 10th 2008 12:15p Nathan T Freeman The comment
thread at Ed's, and some other
Yellowverse
responses,
are laying the blame for lack of Domino support on the iPhone at IBM's
feet. Clearly IBM misstepped in their relationship with Apple somewhere,
whether by pissing someone off or by allowing MSFT to secretly bargain
for an exclusivity deal. But it's also important to note that, unless
Apple decides to let someone in, there simply IS NO CAPABILITY to integrate
with the native apps on the iPhone.
Even the IBM product [read] Keywords: domino

The meaning of "product management"
Wed, Jun 4th 2008 10:31a Nathan T Freeman In response to my last post, Yancy Lent
says the problem of understanding the customer's needs is really one of
product management. Developers don't need to relate to the man on
the street -- only product managers do. Perhaps I should have simply
said "decision makers" instead of engineers, but I was really
referring to the entire product team in general.
That being said, I disagree wholeheartedly.
In fact, I think the concept of "product
management" is really where the problem [read] Keywords: dblookup

The Gulf of Practices and Understanding
Tue, Jun 3rd 2008 2:10p Nathan T Freeman One of the great effects of IBM's growth
into social computing has been the flattening of their development organization,
and the enormous opening of communications channels between the people
that build their software products and the people that use them.
In several recent conversations with
those software engineers recently I discovered that I was getting increasingly

Tue, Apr 29th 2008 9:23a Nathan T Freeman Some recent articles at Ed

the difficulty some people have searching in Notes. Two main themes
seem to be emerging: 1) it's easy to search your Notes mail; and 2) people
need more training on the product.

The definitive case for segregation
Thu, Apr 3rd 2008 7:54a Nathan T Freeman No, not THAT kind of segregation! I
mean segregation of data.
Ever since Notes first got calendaring
& scheduling features, a few yellow bleeders have questioned the wisdom
of putting calendar events into the same data store as email. As
features have progressed, this practice has gotten more prevalent, with
Contacts and Chat histories now stored in the mail file, and some asking
for RSS feeds and Journal entries to be included as well. There are
two reasons for this strategy. [read] Keywords: calendaring

End user awareness in IT business

Lotus marketing does not suck (but it doesn't matter)
