About 2 months ago I got an iPhone,
and have been testing the new DWA Ultralite mode on it, now that it is
in Public Beta I can talk about it a little here. I would include
screen shots, but as of now I have not found a way to take a screen shot
of an iPhone with out first jail breaking it, something I really don't
feel like undertaking right now. (any suggestions for this let me know
please)
First off, my general impressions of
the iPhone, the interface is incredible, especially the web browser, and
viewing photos on it, the camera is even pretty decent in good lighting
conditions, My only real complaint is I find it a little difficult
to type on, though as I slowly train myself to let it complete works for
me it is getting a little easier.
In Domino 8.0 DWA came in two flavors,
Full and Lite, in Domino 8.5 a third option was added DWA Ultralite, which
is specifically defined for the iPhone, to use it you will need your mail
template upgraded to the mail85 template. The design is intended
to mimic the look and feel of native iPhone applications and it does a
pretty good job allowing access to e-mail, calendar, and contacts (if they
are synched to the mail file). The load time is quick, and navigation
has been made pretty easy.
Now for the best part, the DWA redirector
template which ships with notes has been updated to include a section for
Mobile devices, the default configuration allows you to use one URL which
when accessed from a browser will redirect the user to DWA Full or Lite,
but the same URL when accessed from an iPhone will redirect straight to
Ultralite, so I have one URL that I can use to access my mail regardless
of which mode I want it to be in. If you have not played with the
redirector, you can create if off the Template as pictured below (and before
he comments my friend Chris
will point out that the template is still named "iNotes Redirect"
though most other references are DWA)
The configuration of the redirector
is the same as in previous versions, with the addition of the Mobile section
which comes pre-populated for the iPod and iPhone as seen here. You
can add other devices in as well, though I have not tried it on any others
yet.
I know I would prefer to see Traveler
support for the iPhone, and I
suspect down the road it will happen, but until it does, this is a decent
start for Notes support on the iPhone.

A question came up today on how to display
different data for different types of employee profiles in Lotus Connections,
the answer is to create different types of Profiles and assign users in
to that Profile type.
Before you begin make sure you have
backed uo your profiles-confg.xml, and follow the instructions for checking
out the file
before editing.
Profile types are defined in the "profiles-config.xml
file in the section, this is the start of the

If you have been using Notes as your
calendar for a while at some point you have probably had to deal with a
duplicated meeting entry, and especially if it was a repeating meeting
it was next to impossible to resolve the duplicate, you were generally
better off leaving both entries and dealing with it. I had heard
that in Notes 8.5 there was some work around resolving issues with duplicated
calendar entries, and this morning while straightening out my calendar
I came across this

System Availability and Redundancy

redundancy before a failure is probably a pretty good idea, which

For the second season in a row the Mets

was really an incredible few days here in South Florida. While there were

Quickr Hotfix Installer

For those following Quickr you know
that Hotfixes are a regular occurence (my opinion on the frequency of Hotfixes
can be read here).
One of the biggest complaints is that until now the process to install
a hotfix was manually copying files into many different directories making
it a time consuming process and one prone to error. Well good news,
starting with Quickr HF 19 which is due out imminently there is a Hotfix
Installer (for Windows only).

For a while now I have been working
with both Lotus and Tivoli products that interact with each other, specifically
Tivoli monitoring for Domino, and Tivoli Storage Manager TDP. On
more then one occasion a Domino server crash has been attributed to a Tivoli
process, but that is not the part that drives me crazy. What gets
me is when Lotus support refers to a Tivoli application as a "third

Today IBM released a Sametime Advanced plugin that is supported in the
Sametime client embedded in Notes 8.0. Technote

Of course when I last wrote about this it was back in May and I was
actually running Notes 8.0.1, now I am running Notes
8.5 Beta1 so here is hoping this

About 2 months ago I got an iPhone,
and have been testing the new DWA Ultralite mode on it, now that it is
in Public Beta I can talk about it a little here. I would include

which is the Personal File Sharing, and Standard which included both. You
can toggle between install types via a notes.ini setting. If you

Cleanup unsuccessful device installations in Windows

Recently I had a problem on my laptop
where no new USB Drives could be installed, hard drives or USB keys that
had been previously been installed connected and worked fine, but a new
device would never install successfully. After searching around a
little I found this trick to see "Hidden Devices" in Device manager
to be able to clean up the failed installs. To cleanup failed installs
(or see other installed devices that are not present) do the following

Lotus Connections on Blackberry

Blackberry released the Lotus Connections
Client for Blackberry today, the first version fully supports Profiles
and Dogear. The download is available in two flavors, one for loading
via Desktop Manager, and one for Over the air download.
This is version 1.0, I would expect
to see a lot more in future releases which are being worked on now. I
have not played with it much yet, but profiles search is nice, and fully
integrated with the Blackberry for phone and e-mail.

Thanks to everyone for their good wishes
via comments, tweets and e-mails. By far the most popular question
I have been getting is about the babies names. Right now the babies
have not been given names, by Jewish tradition baby boys are given their
names on the eighth day at their Bris.
Our twins were born a few weeks early so their Bris will likely be
delayed a bit beyond the eighth day (we wait until the doctor clears them

Lotus Connections and Oracle

Until now all of the work I have done
with Lotus Connections has been with DB2 as the Database, but following
my own advice for selecting a database platform,
I will ultimately be using Oracle as the database, so I decided to
give it a try now and begin the learning process.
The good news, overall the process was
really no different then DB2, I found one bug (if you could even call it
that), and had Connections up and running in no time. Following the

after Notes 8.0.1 shipped the embedded Sametime client still can not access
