Lotusphere 2009: Cool demo - if I may say so myself :-)
Wed, Nov 26th 2008 4:03p Mikkel Heisterberg My Lotusphere session preparation is in full swing and as previously mentioned this includes preparing demos.
The latest one I have done is about drag'n'drop and how you can use it to do some cool stuff. The demo shows how you can drag text from an e-mail to a sidebar plug-in and have the sidebar plug-in accept the drop. Then when you drag the text from the sidebar plug-in it is converted into a PDF document hence drag'n'drop from the sidebar plug-in results in a file. Text in - file out.

Notes 8 - impossible is nothing
Tue, Nov 25th 2008 5:49a Mikkel Heisterberg Part of going out and preaching the extensible nature of Notes 8 is having a presentation and demos to back it up. The demos I have but I have been working on the presentation and a graphic for the closing slide. You can see the result so far on the right. It's clear that I'm not a graphics wizard but I did manage to follow a description on how to create a rubber stamp effect on top of the Notes 8 graphics. [read] Keywords: notes

Lotusphere 2009: Demo showing off the extensibility of Notes 8
Mon, Nov 24th 2008 3:57p Mikkel Heisterberg Part of my preparation for Lotusphere is preparing my session presentation as well as preparing demos for the session. One of the demos is an example of the different extension points available to you as a plug-in developer. As a general rule most of what you see in Notes 8 can be extended.
The demo I did this afternoon is a demo that shows how you might extend the search capability of Lotus Notes by adding your own search provider. In lack of better example I did an search provider that sear [read] Keywords: ibm

Upgrading a Lotus Connections Pilot install
Mon, Nov 10th 2008 4:19a Mikkel Heisterberg For testing etc. internally I use a Lotus Connections 2.x Pilot install which is working fine for me. Now that 2.0.0 FP1 has been out for some time and 2.0.1 has been released I have wanting to update my install. If nothing else to make sure it worked with Firefox 3. As previously blogged it is quite easy to update Connections if you know how. Before starting I had my doubts if it was possible at all to upgrade a Pilot install but I had to try.
For starters I wanted to get my install up to 2. [read] Keywords: connections

Dragging Sametime buddies around
Thu, Nov 6th 2008 7:39a Mikkel Heisterberg I have been playing a little with the drag'n'drop support in the Notes 8.5 beta client and found out that a VCard is created the you drag a Sametime contact to a place that accepts dragging files to (this probably also works in earlier versions). This means that dragging a Sametime buddy to the desktop will create a VCard for that person. Nice! Dragging the buddy to an e-mail (or other place which accepts text transfer) will create a mailto-link.
Just one of those nice, time saving features... [read] Keywords: notes

How I survive using Notes 8 sidebar plugins on my 4:3 display at home
Tue, Oct 28th 2008 9:19a Mikkel Heisterberg Lets face it! The advent of Notes 8 and the sidebar really requires you to use a wide-screen display if you want to keep the sidebar expanded and have some screen real estate left for mail and business applications. This is a major head ache for me when I'm in my home office as my primary display is a 4:3 (i.e. traditional) display and my wide-screen laptop is the secondary display. I found a solution that works for me though.
The way I solve this is by detaching the sidebar plugins I use the [read] Keywords: ibm

Do you work across timezones?
Mon, Oct 20th 2008 9:09a Mikkel Heisterberg Well if you do, do you then use the new feature of Notes 8.0.2 / Notes 8.5 to show an alternate timezone in your calendar? I do and I find it very nice that it's easier to see across the timezones.
To set it up open the preferences, navigate to "Calendar and To Do/Regional Settings" and specify the alternate timezone in the middle box (cleverly named Timezone). The change doesn't require a restart of the Notes client. Below is my setup. [read] Keywords: ibm

Doing Java in Notes? - make sure you know about JavaCompilerTarget
Thu, Oct 16th 2008 8:28a Mikkel Heisterberg I blogged about the JavaCompilerTarget back in August last year when Notes 8 came out as you needed it to enable Java 5 in Domino Designer. Last week some nice new info on this notes.ini setting came my way in the Design Partner forum for Domino NEXT. If you're doing Java development in Notes you would want to read on.
And yes - I did check with IBM whether it was okay to blog it. Since this info is on its way out in technote (technote 1320401) it was fine that I blogged it.

Remember that XPages is built in JSF
Wed, Oct 15th 2008 4:09a Mikkel Heisterberg As you might know the new XPages design element of Notes/Domino 8.5 is based on a Sun Java technology called Java Server Pages or JSF for short. As such many techniques from JSF development can be reused in XPage development why it might be beneficial for you to follow some of the JSF litterature as well.
As always the newsletters from Sun is a good place to start and just recently there was two articles on composite UI components in JSF. You can find part 1 and part 2 on the web. [read] Keywords: composite

Show 'n Tell Thursday: Cross compiling sidebar plugins for Notes 8.0.x and Notes 8.5 (7 August 2008)
Thu, Aug 7th 2008 3:29a Mikkel Heisterberg I haven't done a SnTT in months so I guess it's about time. This week it's about cross compiling sidebar plugins for Notes 8.5 and Notes 8.0.2. Enjoy...
Since installing Notes 8.5 I have had a lot of trouble developing in Eclipse 3.4 for Notes 8.5 and having the plugins work in Notes 8.0.x as well. The problem showed itself as a NullPointerException when trying to load the plugin Activator and a "Viewpart is null" message in the Notes UI. Looking at the log trace showed a class incompatibility [read] Keywords: domino

Running your own DNS?
Tue, Aug 5th 2008 6:50a Mikkel Heisterberg If you are be sure to listen to Security Now! episode 155 ("How DNS works") to learn about the DNS exploits circulating the internet these days. Also you might want to test the DNS servers you use to see if they they are subject to the attack.
I know Comcast and some other major ISP's in the US and England are having problems since they haven't patched their DNS servers yet. [read] Keywords: security

Discovering Notes 8: VMWare, Notes 8 and database corruption
Tue, Aug 5th 2008 3:19a Mikkel Heisterberg For quite some time I have been a strong proponent of using VMWare for customer development. I used to have 2 or 3 Notes clients in various versions installed on my laptop with a directory pointer per customer linked into my main data directory. A little over a year ago I switched to using VMWare Workstation instead for all development. This setup worked out great for me.
Some customers had their own VMWare images and some customers shared a VMWare image. This also worked out great. Once Notes [read] Keywords: domino

Amazon web services - amazing!
Mon, Aug 4th 2008 2:39a Mikkel Heisterberg I just got a billing statement for my usage of the Amazon S3 storage service and it's amazing! Well not the actual statement but the contents of the statement. The statement shows that I have 5.36 USD due.
I uploaded around 3,5 GB of data to my account but what I'm paying for is not the storage costs but the transfer costs. Bandwidth is more expensive than storage! Of the amount due is 0.54 USD for storage and 1.08 USD is tax. The rest is transfer and bandwidth.
For those interested I'm usin [read] Keywords: laptop

Really like being able to minimize sidebar plugins to icons
Thu, Jul 31st 2008 6:02a Mikkel Heisterberg Prior to Notes 8.5 it wasn't really an option to load many sidebar plugins as they, even when minimized, would take up a great deal of screen real estate. From Notes 8.5 you can choose to minimize a sidebar plugin to an icon at the bottom of the sidebar panel which is really nice. You do this is in the part menu by selecting "Minimize to Icon".
In my Notes 8.5 client I run the following 10 sidebar plugins:
TwitNotes (well of cause)

TwitNotes - 1.0.5 released to the update site
Wed, Jul 30th 2008 6:05p Mikkel Heisterberg Finally after talking about it for a long time and working on it for even longer I'm happy to announce that I have uploaded TwitNotes v. 1.0.5 to the update site. This release became bigger than first expected and required more work than expected so I'm really happy to get it out there. Before you go ahead and upgrade/install let me tell you a little about what has happened with TwitNotes since the last public release (v. 1.0.3).

Why patching the org.apache.commons.lang plugin is necessary
Wed, Jul 30th 2008 6:03p Mikkel Heisterberg As part of the core Lotus Expeditor framework a number of Apache Jakarta Commons libraries are supplied as plugins. Unfortunately the org.apache.commons.lang plugin is incorrectly packaged which means that developers cannot reuse code from this library. This goes for all Notes 8 releases so far (Notes 8.0, 8.0.1, 8.0.2 beta 1, 8.0.2 beta 2, 8.5 beta 1).
The problem is that the plugin manifest file (MANIFEST.MF) doesn't export all the packages of the library but only the root package. The *righ [read] Keywords: expeditor

Messing with JSON?
Thu, Jul 17th 2008 1:05a Mikkel Heisterberg Working with JSON can be a little tricky since it normally comes in as one long string which means it can be difficult to discover the data structure. I ran into this while pasing the search.twitter.com JSON API and needed a JSON viewer to help me out. A quick Google search later I found JsonViewer which is a very nice small utility for perusing JSON data. No install necessary.

TwitNotes - 1.0.5 is coming and has search.twitter.com capability
Wed, Jul 16th 2008 1:11p Mikkel Heisterberg In whatever spare time I have I'm working on finishing TwitNotes v. 1.0.5 so it's ready for Notes 8.5 and Notes 8.0.2. Among other things TwitNotes now supports proxies by using the HTTP libraries built into Notes. It has been somewhat of a challenge but I'm getting there. Last night I thought I was done but no...
After hearing about the Twitter acquisition of Summize and trying it out I had to add this capability to TwitNotes. First I extended the Twitter Java API I'm using to support the JSO [read] Keywords: notes

My steps for installing Lotus Connections 2.0 FP1

Adaptors in Eclipse
Sun, Jul 6th 2008 9:51a Mikkel Heisterberg A new article has been added to eclipse.org/articles and it describes the Adaptor pattern and how it's used in Eclipse. A must read if you're into Eclipse/Notes 8.x plug-in development. Below is the introduction.
"The adapter pattern is used extensively in Eclipse. The use of this pattern allows plug-ins to be loosely coupled, yet still be tightly integrated in the extremely dynamic Eclipse runtime environment. LotusScript.doc - an update...
Thu, Jul 3rd 2008 6:09p Mikkel Heisterberg So it's been very quiet lately around LotusScript.doc and I'm a bit ashamed that I haven't written anything publicly about it for a long time. Prompted by this comment and numerous conversations at ILUG2008 I think it's time for an update.
The state of affairs is that version 2 is almost done. With that said with new job and rebuilding my appartment I just haven't had the time. Playing with new projects like TwitNotes has also taken some attention away from the project. Since it's been so long [read] Keywords: lotusscript

TwitNotes - why it doesn't run in Notes 8.5 beta and why IBM should care
Wed, Jun 18th 2008 7:29a Mikkel Heisterberg After getting my Eclipse IDE to work with Notes 8.5 I nailed why TwitNotes doesn't work with Notes 8.5 beta yesterday. For long I was told that the main culprit was me using my own copy of org.apache.commons.httpclient but rather the version of org.apache.commons.lang that IBM supply as part of the platform was the problem.
To get TwitNotes working with Notes 8.5 I had to use both the IBM version of org.apache.commons.lang and org.apache.commons.httpclient and not my own versions. This is fine [read] Keywords: expeditor

setlogrlev for Notes 8.5 from Eclipse 3.4
Mon, Jun 16th 2008 10:41a Mikkel Heisterberg Using the Eclipse configuration I posted earlier the plug-in with the setlogrlev OSGi console command wouldn't launch. To solve this you can either manually to start the com.ibm.rcp.core.logger plug-in from the OSGi console or configure the config.ini file on the launch configuration. The former can be done with the below command. A description on how to do the latter has been added to the step-by-step instructions.

Configure Eclipse 3.4 for Notes 8.5 plug-in development
Mon, Jun 16th 2008 10:20a Mikkel Heisterberg So ever since I got one of the first drops of Notes 8.5 and with increasing effort since the public beta of Notes 8.5 came out I have been trying to get my Eclipse IDE ready for Notes 8.5 plug-in development no without success. Shout outs to IBM have been unsuccessful... :-(
Notes 8.5 is built on Expeditor 6.2 which in turn is based on Eclipse 3.4 (codenamed Ganymede). I couldn't get my Eclipse 3.2/Expeditor 6.1 toolkit combo to work with Notes 8.5 and without an Expeditor toolkit for Expedito [read] Keywords: expeditor
