Amy Hoerle and I presented the session BP119  Be a Lotus Domino Detective: Tackling Your Toughest Performance Issues at Lotusphere last week.  Thank you to all who attended and for the wonderful feedback.  The slide deck can be found by clicking here or going to the conferences page on our web site (www.kimgreene.com).

For those of you unable to attend the Lotusphere conference, below is the session abstract.

BP119: Be a Lotus Domino Detective: Tackling Your Toughest Performance Issues

Speakers: Kim Greene - Kim Greene Consulting, Inc., President, Amy Hoerle - Kim Greene Consulting, Inc., Senior Consultant

Abstract: Are you concerned you may not be achieving optimal performance in your Lotus Domino environment? Become a Domino performance investigator.  Learn from the experts how to take abstract symptoms like “Notes is slow” or “transactions are timing out” and break it down into a resolvable problem.  See the methodology and tricks involved to find the true culprit using tools such as semaphore timeouts, memory dumps, call stack analysis, and server monitoring. Learn how to put activity logging and activity trends to work for you to find the hot databases on your servers.  See how obsolete tuning parameters can inhibit your servers from using all resources. Discover how effectively using monitoring graphs can simplify performance troubleshooting, which statistics are of value, and when and how to chart specific statistics depending on where the issue lies. This session will unravel the mystery of how to debug issues with performance on your servers and free up resources from buried contention.

Full text thread performance tuning and semaphore timeouts
Mon, Jun 13th 2011 11:09a   Kim Greene
I do a lot of performance optimization for my customers. Over the years I have seen the use of full text index operations increasing on servers. In scenarios where a large amount of full text indexing operations are happening, I recommend spawning full text indexing operations to a separate thread. This is accomplished by adding the variable 'Update_Fulltext_Thread=1" to the server's notes.ini file. The statistics you want to focus on to determine if this tuning parameter is necessa [read] Keywords: notes application applications database server xml

Misleading DAOS error message
Sun, Feb 20th 2011 1:08p   Kim Greene
I recently implemented DAOS for a customer.  With transaction logging and DAOS enabled, I ended and restarted the Domino server.  The following error message showed on the console: Warning: DAOS object minimum participation size = 0, which is below the minimum recommended value of 64000 The DAOS object size was above the minimum recommended value of 64000.  There were no typos in the path for the transaction log or the DAOS path.  The minimum object size for DAOS didn't contain any inva [read] Keywords: domino server

divOne of my customers uses a third party application that provides functionality through an add-in task.  The add-in task recently stopped functioning and was consuming around 50% of the CPU.  In looking at the call stack, the add-in task was invoking the procedure  NABResolveName__FP12LNViewFolderUl8LNStringT3R6LNTextT5 over and over.  In working with the business partner this evening that provides the add-in task, we discovered what the issue was./divdiv /divdivThe customer has three dif [read] Keywords: administration application bleedyellow bleedyellow.com

div I received a call from a customer this AM whose server was hung.  The server was experiencing a semaphore lock and was in a deadlock state and wouldnt end.  I dumped the call stacks, took an NSD, and then ended the server *immed to get it to end.  After the server was down, I deleted the Domino semaphores (it was the only Domino server running on the iSeries) and restarted the server.  Two of the applications reported they needed a consistency check performed on them.  I ran fixup -F a [read] Keywords: domino nsd applications database server
