SnTT - Waiter there's a local ID lost on my server
Thu, Dec 4th 2008 8:49a Keith Brooks Ripped from the headlines....well maybe one of my clients servers, I am happy to bring something to light which happens, sometimes, for no reason, that my client can say, yet I must fix it anyway. Good thing I am not hands on anymore these days? Riiiiight! Because 15 years of Domino Admin experience gets me all the problem clients no matter what I am doing these days. So back to why I asked you here today to read my minds thoughts. The server console spits out, every hour consistently mind yo [read] Keywords: admin

Lotus/IBM Support Something you should know
Wed, Dec 3rd 2008 9:42p Keith Brooks Note to IBM, make the Support teams have some logo, nothing on the IBM site for it that i could find. Even an orange circle with an H inside would be nice. Many years ago they were the best when you needed help. Then like many organizations do they had some trouble spots along the way, but I am happy to say they are back in full swing and really worth their money. But you should remember they are just like you, and you may have been one of them once, or still are in some ways, so be kind, be n [read] Keywords: domino

All BES Support Calls Should Be THIS Easy
Wed, Dec 3rd 2008 8:29a Keith Brooks You may have seen my tweets about this, if not, follow me on Twitter. Friday, the day after Thanksgiving I have a message from the support line about a user that can't synch their Blackberry and their personal address book or contacts database. They are on R6.5(soon to be upgraded to 8.5 when gold) and it works for everyone else. Figured some corruption or something in the service book. Did the usual BES push and checks and left a vmail to call me on Monday if it didn't fix it self. Monday wa [read] Keywords: R6

Premier of UC2, from The View
Tue, Dec 2nd 2008 10:09a Keith Brooks As some may know, I was lucky enough to be among the first writers for Wellesley Information Services, the parent of The View magazine and seminars, for their new UC2 online webzine, called The UCView. Out of 8 articles in this "issue" only 4 are not from IBM teams. And in fact the other 3 articles are from one firm, Ascendant and then there is mine. Lotus Twitter Advertising

Real Life Client Migration Case Study - In Progress #1
Mon, Nov 24th 2008 8:49a Keith Brooks Again, thanks to some discussions I have recently with various Yellowbleeders decided to post about a client of ours. No name or anything and even if they read this they will never know it's them, sadly many are similar. After some projects, and general IT work with the company, our sales guy follows up with them on some ideas from past discussions only to be hit with the now infamous line "We're moving to Exchange....can you help us?" Fud Buster Friday #15 - Exchange 2007, What? You thought Clustering would Work this time?
Fri, Nov 21st 2008 9:08a Keith Brooks Continuing from my post yesterday, I listened to a call from CIO magazine about Risks and Mitigation Strategies for Exchange 2007. Professional courtesy, obvious interest for my benefit, but what I wasn't expecting was a complete sales pitch from Dell. I really wanted to know what does or doesn't work and how they get around it, it's the geek in me, probably should have realized this wasn't a CTO call. Was your CIO on this call?
Thu, Nov 20th 2008 5:01p Keith Brooks Just got off a call from CIO magazine in which Dell was hawking their MessageOne solution. I am not happy about this. Maybe it's my fault, I expect more from CIO, or maybe I expect more from other CIOs. If I wanted a sales pitch I could call Dell or anyone else to do it, so why bother me with this? Enticing it was to discuss issues corporations face when migrating to Exchange 2007 with other CIOs but that wasn't what it became. SnTT - When an Error Message Gets Misplaced
Thu, Nov 20th 2008 10:29a Keith Brooks Sometimes one gets away from you. This must be Quickr's for R8.1. I received this after converting a Quickr server from using LDAP as it's Directory to Domino as it's Directory. Remember to revert any changes in the qpconfig.xml for LDAP when doing this. Google Gets one from Microsoft
Tue, Nov 18th 2008 10:16a Keith Brooks While Duffbert and Ed discovered an interesting set of articles which you really must read, one thing was not discussed. In this article from Cnet.com there is a little reference to Serena Software (800 users) Just last week, Serena Software said it was switching to Google from Exchange in a move it said would save it $750,000 a year, according to several reports. This equates to about $950 PER USER to make this move. In an article in Eweek the explanation gets deeper, for $50/yr per user [read] Keywords: collaboration

Sharepoint, The Cloud and the Environment
Mon, Nov 10th 2008 10:26a Keith Brooks An article in Information Week, which appeared slightly different in print from the online version covered some pros and cons. The software's Swiss Army knife approach helps companies create more useful intranets, set up document sharing, offer blogs and wikis, and build a richer online company directory. Fud Buster Friday Lucky #13 - Exchange is Everywhere
Fri, Nov 7th 2008 9:29a Keith Brooks SO WHAT! Microsoft laughs to the bank every single day because your CFO doesn't talk to the CIO or CTO about why this solution must get rebuilt every few years. Why does this sway your CXO's mind so easily? What causes people to have a herd mentality and be so fiscally irresponsible? Yes, Windows is almost everywhere. Tue, Sep 9th 2008 10:50p Keith Brooks If you are coming to Lotusphere and blog Lotus items or IBM or appear on PLanetLotus.org you may want to go check on the Facebook group created for the Blogger Lounge. I know you are asking why not use a Lotus program, well, we will, just not for this part. Why not use Ideajam? See the post here and comment in its discussion if you wish. I felt since so many are on Facebook(I invited 80 of you to it already!) it was easiest to get across what is needed. Click on the link to go the group. If y [read] Keywords: ibm

Chrome + Lotus Webmail (iNotes), Works Fine
Mon, Sep 8th 2008 3:41p Keith Brooks FatGuppy on Twitter and some other people have been ranting the Lotus Noets Client for webmail, sometimes referred to as iNotes or Domino Web Access, doesn't work. This is far from the truth. In accessing my server via the Google "front end client" browser, Chrome, all is well. Now we have an R8.0.1 server and an 8.0.2 server in cluster. If you are checking it out on an older version of Lotus Domino, say R6, it would not be a surprise to me if you had some issues. Why? Because you are runnin [read] Keywords: domino

Sametime on a Blackberry, the Followup
Fri, Sep 5th 2008 4:08p Keith Brooks Some of you may recall when I posted about the doc I put together for getting the Sametime client from RIM to install and be pushed out to your community. Happy to report there were over 160 downloads of the doc. Quite a few from someplace called NONE. Must have been the Microsoft guys. Anyway, happy to hear it has helped so many people, evidently I did too good of a job with it as most replies to an email we sent out came back with this: "It is installed and running great. Fud Buster Friday #4 - eMail is a Commodity!
Fri, Sep 5th 2008 10:29a Keith Brooks It has been said by many people and companies. Yet few of those really understand what they are talking about. In revisiting a posting from February this has been a continuous discussion. The definition of a commodity, per Merriam-Webster is a 1) a mass-produced unspecialized product or 2)a good or service whose wide availability typically leads to smaller profit margins and diminishes the importance of factors (as brand name) other than price. SnTT: Which Lotus R8 client are you running and how would you know?
Thu, Sep 4th 2008 3:55p Keith Brooks I posted on Twitter looking for some help with a Notes.ini question. Many of you, I have no doubt, either figured I was being lazy and didn't RTFM or perhaps you knew and didn't tell me. Really I do search the admin guide 1st, IBM 2nd, Twitter 3rd, forums 4th. Well, I have news for you, go RTFM and find it. I'll give you days. You won't. The Question was: If I am setting up notes.ini's for a client to roll out, how do I specify the client version? Now we know that in 8.0.2 a new command calle [read] Keywords: admin

Spam has attacked my Drafts Folder - Help
Wed, Sep 3rd 2008 10:12p Keith Brooks Needless to say this is a bit annoying, and odd. Although we use Spam Sentinel for our personal email(imap/pop3), and Digitar on the corporate side AND Spam Sentinel I am seeing some strange items. First noticed about a month or 2 but now is more than 1-2 emails a day. The 2 Priorities: 1) My personal email, multiple accounts, has been showing spam messages in my drafts folder which appear to be bypassing the inbox entirely. Lotusphere 2009 and my surprise
Wed, Sep 3rd 2008 5:09p Keith Brooks It seems my hotel which I have stayed at the last few years, and has always had excellent Wi-FI and very low rates, went WAY upscale. Yes, I'm talking to you, Best Western. Not funny that a room rate 50% higher than last year is available...as the cheapest option! And who decided a Sunday stay should get $45 MORE compared to the other nights? In the past the Swan and Dolphin always seemed to be so expensive, but being on site is priceless. Domino 8.0.2 AIX Upgrade, 10 minutes
Tue, Sep 2nd 2008 9:51p Keith Brooks In my previous AIX Upgrade post although it was a great guideline to follow, I see it needs some clarifications. In doing my 802 Lotus Domino upgrade on my AIX server, a dual partition server I might add, I followed my notes. But I was vague on some parts. The Domino file, now known as C1K3AEN for the 32 bit version, MUST be in the /opt/lotus directory if you want it to install properly. I know some unix guy out there will say, no it doesn't, but as a non-unix geek, I go with what works, so pu [read] Keywords: domino

The Mojave Experiment....FudBuster #2
Thu, Aug 14th 2008 11:44p Keith Brooks I got side tracked this week and wanted to look into this. The Mojave experiment as Microsoft called it was an interesting idea. For those not in the know, 100 people off the street, so to speak, were shown a "new" Microsoft OS after some questions about how they viewed Vista. Of course what they saw was Vista. And low and behold, eye candy makes them decide to go with Vista. Because in Microsoft's world, it's all about Eye Candy.Even if it takes sometime to produce it. Wed, Aug 13th 2008 10:17p Keith Brooks You say Lotus is a Legacy solution? Are we that old? What about Exchange? Well you waited nearly 4 years for an update, was it worth it? You spent 5 years of Software Assurance money with Microsoft and now you wonder how they could afford to buy Yahoo!?! Outlook also you waited 4 years. IE as well. You waited 6 years for Vista since XP emerged. Forgot about Sharepoint, an excellent chart is found here, hopefully IBM SWAT has seen this. Yep, almost 4 years past. See a pattern? Tue, Aug 12th 2008 10:59p Keith Brooks As some of you may know, I twittered today that I had a hell of a time trying to resolve a number of issues on my laptop(yes it's Vista, but it's not usually a problem) which unfortunately manifested itself in my Lotus Notes client and Sametime clients. BES 4.1.6 further update on Domino Conflicts
Mon, Aug 11th 2008 11:55a Keith Brooks Happy Yellow Day to all! In a previous post from July 29th I discussed the work around to resolving the broken Traveler and Sametime. What you don't know is the details about it. Yes the INI setting is the problem. It basically stops all servlets. RIM informed me they would document the change in noets.ini and warn people about it. RIM suggests people NOT load anything else on their BES box. Those of you in big companies have no problem with this. SMB have a problem. Running their Domino serv [read] Keywords: document

Lotus Notes Traveler and BES 4.1.6 Resolution
Tue, Jul 29th 2008 1:29p Keith Brooks After some discussions with RIM and IBM, the good people at IBM support, thanks to Steven Kyle who handled my PMR, were able to recreate the problem on a test server. It seems the installation of BES 4.1.6 alters the notes.ini file Lotus Notes Traveler has two components, a Server and an HTTP Servlet. The Server communicates with the users mail servers, stores history information etc and the HTTP Servlet communicates with the devices. BES 4.1.6 upgrade may break Lotus Notes Traveler
Fri, Jul 25th 2008 3:10p Keith Brooks A technical posting, ask for help and others who have this setup and it works or doesn't work. If like many small companies you run a Domino server and it also hosts BES and traveler, you may have a problem. We upgraded a BES to 416 from 415 this morning and since then Traveler has stopped. It is running on the server fine, but the clients can't connect, error 36 usually. Something has affected the servlet engine and Traveler clients can not connect to the server.
