The other day, Philip Storry wrote "A lack of training, or a lack of intelligence", about someone sending a death threat to a professor who happens to be an atheist. This person (mkroll, who later was identified as Melanie Kroll) sent the mail from her work address at 1-800-FLOWERS. If you look at the headers provided by Professor Myers, you can see that the address is not spoofed.
I contacted a journalist at IDG that I know from working there, and he did some investigating to see if he would be able to write a story about this. I just got a mail from him, informing me that Melanie was fired yesterday over this mail.
I say as the very funny Ron White: "You just can't fix stupid"... |

Halloween pumpkin carved!
Sun, Oct 26th 2008 11:29a Karl-Henry Martinsson Well, I got my yearly pumpkin done. It ended up being Gollum from The Lord of The Rings movie trilogy. The pattern was somewhat complicated, due to the fact there were large areas when the skin was just supposed to be removed and the pumpkin walls made thinner. What I ended up doing was to mark the different sections on the pumpkin with white-board markers, different colors for areas to cut through (black), un-touched (green) and thinned (red):Then it was just to start up the Dremel tool, usi [read] Keywords: wiki

Halloween - pumpkin carving
Fri, Oct 24th 2008 12:09p Karl-Henry Martinsson Even if I am not originally from the US, and we don't celebrate Halloween the same way as here, I do enjoy it. Especially carving pumpkins. I found a cool website, ExtremePumpkins.com with lot of tips and pictures, where you also could get some inspiration.Last year I created a stormtrooper helmet from Star Wars for my son, who is a big Star Wars fan. I have not decided what to do this year...In Sweden, Halloween (or All Saint's Eve) is a more somber celebration of the dead, celebrated on the f [read] Keywords: exchange

Today is Leif Eriksson Day
Thu, Oct 9th 2008 11:42a Karl-Henry Martinsson As probably most of you know, the scandinavian (Norwegian/Icelandic) explorer Leif Eriksson (Leifr Eiríksson) landed in North America almost 500 years before Columbus, in 1000 A.D. or perhaps 1-2 years later. He there established a small settlement. Today, October 9, is therefor, by presidential proclamation, Leif Erikson day in the US. As it should be, Leif Erikson Day is before Columbus Day (coming up this next Monday).Leif Erikson Day, 2008 A Proclamation by the President of the United Sta [read] Keywords: atlantic

Swedish Cinnamon Rolls
Wed, Oct 8th 2008 12:41a Karl-Henry Martinsson The other day I found some yeast in the grocery store, and i picked some up because I wante dto bake something. After I can home, I decided I had not had any cinnamon rolls in a long time. So this is how I made them.* Crumble 2 1/2 packages of fresh yeast (totalling about 50 gram) into a big bowl.* Melt a little bit more than one stick (113 gram) of butter, I used about 130 gram. Add 5 dl (a little over a pint) of milk. Heat to body temperature/finger warm. You should not be feeling anything w [read] Keywords: nd

"Use care, edges may be sharp"
Wed, Oct 1st 2008 6:15p Karl-Henry Martinsson Saturday 2 weeks ago, I was cleaning off my livingroom table. Had some trash there from the previous evening, some wrappers from my dinner, a Subway sandwich. There was also the lid from a can of pineapples, the kind that you just pop off. I found out the hard way that the edges of the lid in fact are razor sharp... I put the lid together with the rest of the trash (paper). As I often do, I crumbled the wrappers together while I started to walk back towards the kitchen and the trash can. Bad id [read] Keywords: bleedyellow

Mon, Sep 29th 2008 12:08p Karl-Henry Martinsson John James posted a list of what food on the "Omnivore's 100" list he have eaten. So I decided to post my version of the list. The list if, as John explians it, from Very Good Taste blog who came up with a list of foods that they feel every omnivore should eat in their life time. Bold means I have eaten/tried it, crossed out means I wouldn't touch it in a million years. So here is the list, along with my results. 1. Venison 2. Nettle tea - Had nettle soup, though. I just want to point out a few things, which are not talked about that often here in the US.
* 15 of the 19 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia, also the home country of Osama Bin-Ladin. {link}

September 11 - My story
Thu, Sep 11th 2008 3:56p Karl-Henry Martinsson I was sitting in the office in downtown Boston as usual when Angie, my then-wife, called me. On August 31 she had surgery, and on September 7 she got some chest pains that they diagnosed as a suspected blood clot, so they were keeping her in the hospital for about a week. She was watching TV in her room at Brigham and Women's hospital, a fairly tall building. It has been almost six years since I stopped drinking regular soda (mainly Coca-Cola) and switched to diet drinks, but about a month ago I decided I would try to cut them out altogether. Lotus Notes sucks - or does it?
Fri, May 23rd 2008 12:48a Karl-Henry Martinsson The other day I saw a posting in comp.groupware.lotus-notes.programmer, where the poster said that he have been defending Lotus Notes from people that dislike it and want to get rid of it. I asked what problems the users had, and this is the response:
This is the only application we have in Notes - we do use notes mail - but it is the application that is giving Notes a bad name. It is the result of a extremely bad design and implementation of an application 12 years ago in Notes 4.5.

Simple but effective code
Mon, May 12th 2008 4:37p Karl-Henry Martinsson The other day I was writing some code where I had to check a value against a list of potential values. I was importing a file as XML, and checking a number of transactions, each in their own node. If the Trans-ID tag had one of several values, the whole node was supposed to be discarded and not used. I am sure many already use this method, but hopefully someone will learn something new. Why Notes is cool
Tue, Apr 15th 2008 10:56a Karl-Henry Martinsson Lately I have been thinking back on my career. You may have read my two postings about how I started with Notes and how I started with computers in general. This made me start thinking: what is it with Lotus Notes that I find so fascinating?

How I started with computers
Sun, Apr 13th 2008 12:36p Karl-Henry Martinsson A little while ago I wrote about how I started with Lotus Notes. When I read some other people's descriptions, they told more of their background how they got into computers as well. SNTT: Lists - the forgotten gem in Lotusscript

Lists are a data type that I don't think is used enough. Many Notes developers, even some that been programming in the environment for years, don't use this very powerful feature. In previous years, Bill Buchan have been talking about lists in some of his Lotussphere sessions, and when asking how many in the audience that used lists, less than 10% raised their hands.
So what are lists? They are a data type, similar to [read] Keywords: lotusscript
