interesting domino job in denver
Wed, Nov 9th 2011 7:22p   John Vaughan
my good friend dave needs a senior domino architect/coder to work in denver. sure looks like a cool job. there are all these sensors monitoring renewable energy devices, all this data going... somewhere, and the somewhere is prototyped in domino, and will likely stay in domino too. i kinda knocked around some ideas on the basic architecture with dave and boy, i wish i could work on this. it's the kind of thing that people say you can't do with domino but you know what? yes you can! the good thing about grief is that it is essentially about acceptance. there's anger, there's sadness, all of that. but by its very nature it presents an end to itself. it's a kind of organ, not unlike an intestine, that sort of digests us, and spits us out the other side. i don't think anyone particularly likes being digested. ya know. but ultimately we have no choice but to surrender. the difference between grief and mere sadness, or momentary depression, is that with the [read] Keywords: ibm lotus lotusphere notes applications blogging community development email exchange exchange java mac microsoft oracle security sharepoint

a little mixed up
Mon, Jan 24th 2011 6:02p   John Vaughan
this is the first lotusphere in nine? ten? years i've missed. well i haven't missed it yet, but i'm about to. except for saturday. i'll be there, at the boardwalk, espn, etc, until as late as everyone wants to be out. i'm crashing on site saturday night, to make sure i miss as little as possible. but i can't be around the rest of the week. man i'm going to miss you guys something awful. today i experienced some grief about this. it just keeps coming, here and there, in u [read] Keywords: domino ibm lotus lotusphere notes community planetlotus sharepoint

A few things I recently posted to this blog backfired, and here is the reason: I asserted some things I could not back up. I didn't do the research. To make assertions without vetted, on-record statements from in-the-know experts is just stupid. I'm not a journalist though and I'm not going to try to become one. All that to say, I'm not going to do that again. That's not to say the post was completely without merit, but a good portion of it had no center of grav [read] Keywords: lotus notes blogging

the elephant in the room
Mon, Oct 4th 2010 10:43a   John Vaughan
What is the technological core of the Lotus community? It's Lotus Notes. Lotus Connections is not a part of Lotus Notes. IBM is starting to build some connections to Connections. And this highlights the point: Connections is not Lotus Notes. It also emphasizes something else: Lotus Notes is important. What is the result of Connections not being a collection of Notes applications? For one, I don't see a lot of people talking about Connections in the community. There is t [read] Keywords: connections domino ibm inotes lotus lotusphere lotusscript notes xpages application applications community db2 development dojo eclipse facebook google ideajam java microsoft podcast server sharepoint twitter wiki

In my quest to quickly find an answer to my dojox grid conundrum, I pinged a couple of the guys in the community I knew had been deep into dojo, and specifically, dojox grids. I had a feeling my questions were pretty simple for someone who had spent a lot of time with the grid object. There are exactly two guys that I know for sure have done a lot with dojox grids, and Lance Spellman is one of them. I knew this because of his early work (now a couple of years old already!) on his dojomi [read] Keywords: community development dojo skype

my little slice of the dark side of the dojo equation
Wed, Sep 15th 2010 11:44a   John Vaughan
We are not moving nearly as quickly toward Sharepoint in our shop as, I think, any of us believed. Not only that, but we are on 8.5.1 now in production, and we are starting to write dojo and XPages apps. That's not to say Sharepoint isn't still on the horizon (there is a working prototype of our intranet floating around on a development server), but we are all still writing Domino stuff full time so far. It's a weird, upside down world. Honestly I need to give up trying to underst [read] Keywords: domino ibm xpages application applications development dojo properties security server sharepoint

suspicious

someone sent this old Rumi poem to a listserver i hang around on. Who makes these changes? I shoot an arrow right. It lands left. I ride after a deer and find myself chased by a hog. I plot to get what I want and end up in prison. I dig pits to trap others and fall in. I should be suspicious of what I want. -Rumi / Barks if that isn't an accurate description of my life, i don't know what is. well, i haven't ended up in prison yet, but i'll keep tryi [read] Keywords:
