Why does the Domino community have a "Domino or nothing" mentaility?
Tue, Jan 31st 2012 8:20a   John D Head
The above thought has been on my mind since the middle of December but I have not figured out how to blog about it until recently. Let's start with a public comment from Ed Brill's blog: 14 Erik Brooks | 1/26/2012 11:46:38 AM @Ed - I actually *did* know. I'd still like to hear the reasons why this direction was chosen, because it's eyebrow-raising. My apologies to Erik (didn't go out of my way to call you out Mr. Brooks, your comment was just the easiest one to find) but this is exa [read] Keywords: administration domino ibm lotusphere ods traveler community database development dojo enterprise javascript microsoft mobile python sharepoint websphere

My thoughts on the Lotusphere2012 announcements around Lotus Symphony and Apache OpenOffice.org
Tue, Jan 24th 2012 11:41a   John D Head
At Lotusphere2012, IBM made a pretty big announcements around Lotus Symphony. Let's cover them in order of significance, starting with smallest first. IBM Lotus Symphony 3.0.1 ships Some great new features like the Speakers View and the one million row support make this a great point release. Not sure if there will be an overlay install for the Notes client but working on that. I am very happy that 2012 is here. I don't know about many of you, but 2011 is a year I am glad to put behind me. Professionally, 2011 was amazing. Speaking at Lotusphere 2011, BLUG, UKLUG, IamLUG, and MWLUG on topics that were brand new for me. 2011 was also the year I fully embraced that I am in a sales role, not a delivery role. It has been a difficult mental transition but the results were pretty amazing. It was also the year I fully detached myself from any software brand loyalty war. The season of emotions
Wed, Nov 23rd 2011 8:20a   John D Head
I love this time of year. The air is crisp. The food changes to be more hearty. The memories of my youth come back. Thanksgiving leads into the holiday season that becomes Christmas. My favorite time of the year ... well, after college football falls. The difference is that this year there is an emotional weight attached to the holidays. The first without my father. A Thanksgiving without my father yelling at the Lions to play better. It then leads into the 6 month anniversary and another tri [read] Keywords:

Remembering Dad: Mexico’s Day of the Dead
Tue, Nov 8th 2011 10:31a   John D Head
As this holiday season is going to be many firsts for me without Dad around, Halloween was the beginning. My Dad loved Halloween. He decorated the house, dressed up, and loved to give out toys and treats. His collection of Department 56 houses for Halloween was larger than his Christmas collection - which says something. My uncle, my father's brother, lives in Playa del Carmen and runs a hotel he owns with my aunt. One of the traditions in Mexico around Halloween is the Day of the Dead celeb [read] Keywords:

Lotusphere 2012: TED Style Talks? Not Exactly. "Change the World" in "Worst Practices" Style was the idea ...

So there has been an interesting dialog happening in the Lotusphere 2012 submission process, I thought I would share some ideas of a session that was submitted for Lotusphere 2010. Alan Lepofsky wrote a great blog post about something he would like to see at Lotusphere 2012. His suggestion was shorter style presentations, much in the style of the amazing TED conference. As announced here, I was one of the nine member directors voted to the new Board of Directors for OpenNTF.org. I will be serving for another two years. There is one slight change. I let the former BoD know that I would not seek placement at Intellectual Property Working Group Chairman. That role was something of a roller coaster. The Univeristy of Illinois Fighting Illini are 4 - 0 !!!!

For the first time in sixty years, the Fighting Illini of the University of Illinois have won 4 games without losing a game to start the season. That record brings rankings of #24 in the coaches poll and #22 in the AP poll. The last time that happened, the illini went 9 - 0 - 1 (a tie with Ohio State), won the Big Ten, won the Rose Bowl, and were considered National Champions by the media. The perception gap between clients and vendors with social business and cloud

I have heard something over the past couple of days that I thought I would put out for discussion. I am hearing about a huge gap between what vendors think is the current state with social business and cloud and what customers believe are important to them right now. From branding and marketing to strategy to how they align themselves internally as an organization. I get w [read] Keywords: desktop google microsoft

I have seen many postings, images, and videos today that were made in memory and honor of the 10 year anniversary of the tragic events of 9/11. This one has to be my favorite. Word of warning - this is a difficult video to watch. It shows images of the attacks that are raw and difficult. Mixed in with images of the terrorists who committed these acts. Remembering 9/11/2011
Sun, Sep 11th 2011 8:10a   John D Head
Today marks the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in the United States in New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, DC. Everyone has their own story about where they were that day. I was in Stockholm on a Baltic Cruise. Our British tour guide told us someone attacked the Pentagon. Our reaction was one of laughter ... who could possibly attack the US? Shortly, the attitude was replaced by horror and a sense of dumbstruck. So many people have sacrificed and lost since then. Those on the p [read] Keywords:

Choices and Changes - Saying Goodbye to Soda
Mon, Jul 18th 2011 8:10a   John D Head
What you see above is the last can of soda that I will ever drink. Please bear with me while I explain. One of the things about my father's passing I have not shared is some of the medical history leading up to the heart attack. Turns out that my father was an untreated diabetic. He was told many times that he was in need of diabetes treatment, but he rejected the fact he even had it the disease. I love my father greatly, but he was the most stubborn person I have ever met. My social media breakthrough: How my father’s passing shaped my feelings on Facebook, Twitter, and Google Plus
Fri, Jul 8th 2011 9:20p   John D Head
As I process everything that has happened in June, I am starting to pick out a few lessons learned that I can remember and apply to my life. One of those lessons is around social media engagement. It just happens that I identified the lesson just as Google Plus was launching. Actually, the first 48 hours of my usage of Google Plus really hammered it home. Let me explain. On June 1st, the day my father has his heart attack, I posted a single note on Twitter about it. That posting made it to Fa [read] Keywords: email facebook google linkedin profile twitter

The IBM loss of University of Nebraska - the missing piece of the discussion
Wed, Jul 6th 2011 2:30p   John D Head
There has been a bunch of discussion about The University of Nebraska dropping the use of their in-house IBM Lotus Notes implementation and deciding on a cloud based solution. Tom Duff was the first to write about it on PL, and Palmi Lord wrote about it. It seems that Google and Microsoft were the only two players in the game and that Microsoft 'paid' U of N $25,000 to get the deal. I say 'paid' because giving incentives to close a software deal is what every software company out there does [read] Keywords: collaboration connections ibm lotus lotusphere notes notes client community email google microsoft office

One of my father’s legacies ... Department 56 Overload
Tue, Jun 28th 2011 10:40a   John D Head
The immediate impact of my father's death is days away from being officially complete. The estate sale is over, the house is being cleaned, and the entire family has returned home. As many of you know, I drove a rental truck back from Orlando with help. Why? there were a few personal items that I wanted. A chest my dad bought in San Francisco that matches mine. The business of death - lessons learned
Sat, Jun 25th 2011 9:10a   John D Head
So while this will not be a morbid blog entry, I wanted to capture some thoughts and lessons learned in the past month of dealing with my father's death. Hopefully what I have gone thru will help others. 1. Paperwork is either your saving grace or your worse nightmare. My father passed away in the state of Florida, which has some of the strictest laws on death, so some of this might not apply. But I found that every person needs four legal documents when they die. It is with love that I wish to celebrate the amazing years that John Vernon Head was a larger than life man on this earth. My dad lived live on his own terms. My humble suggestion to the IBM PM team: Please do XPages RDBMS before DDE for Mac

What gets left off the to-do list in place? There is some chatter about server work vs. DDE Mac. To all the DDE on Mac supporters, a few thoughts

So there seems to be a meme today for the Lotus bubble to ask IBM to make Domino Designer on Eclipse (DDE) work on the Apple Mac OS. I have no horse in this fight, but a few thoughts. 1. I don't want to talk about the specifics of what happened - google caching and all that - due to some privacy concerns. Things are greatly improving and while it will be a long road of recovery, the worst is behind us. I want to thank everyone for your support. I had such an outpouring of offers of help I can not even describe. Follow the Product Managers and Executives on Twitter - this is for Marie and Stuart :-)
Mon, Feb 7th 2011 9:00a   John D Head
Before and during Lotusphere 2011, there have been some discussions about how to engage with the IBM Lotus Executives and Product Managers outside of the stage and event. There has been some discussion on if this is needed, and I get Ed's point, but it is always good to engage with folks on a regular basis. I thought it was very interesting that the IBM executives new to the social software team (i.e. Lotus) , Sandy Carter and Nigel Beck ( I love how his url directs to his about.me page ), are [read] Keywords: ibm lotus lotusphere social software twitter

Mon, Jan 31st 2011 3:40p   John D Head
Rich asks where was Project Vulcan in the Lotusphere 2011 OGS today? It was there, but you had to be really paying attention to the Project Vulcan evolution in 2010 to add it up. And as the year progressed, Alistair talked about how IBM was going to ship a first version of the IBM Project Vulcan toolkit in 2010 and make it available to partners. They did t [read] Keywords: ibm ldd lotus lotusphere development twitter wiki
