The Birthing House by Christopher Ransom
Sat, Jul 4th 2009 8:50p   Gregg Eldred
The debut novel from Christopher Ransom, The Birthing House, is quite a blend of tension, suspense, horror, and mystery. But mostly horror. For a debut novel, it is quite good but, at times, difficult to follow. Conrad Harrison heads out of Chicago, travelling the wrong direction, and finds himself in Black Earth, Wisconsin. It is there that he finds a stately old home that he absolutely must buy. Without talking to his wife, he impulsively purchases the house and then informs her of the purc [read] Keywords:

Hater by David Moody
Fri, Jul 3rd 2009 10:59a   Gregg Eldred
There must be something with new authors and 2009; this is the 3rd novel I've read this year by a first-time author. Although it was originally self-published on-line, David Moody's Hater, found a publisher and, with that, should enjoy a lot of new interest. It wasn't until the last few pages that I realized that this is the first novel in a series. Finishing Hater, I can't wait for the next installment. You Want Fries With That: A White-Collar Burnout Experiences Life at Minimum Wage by Prioleau Alexander
Wed, Jul 1st 2009 4:59p   Gregg Eldred
Auburn University is probably best known for its football team. While that is nice, they count among their alumni author Tim Dorsey, who writes some of the most twisted, hilarious, and entertaining books concerning a serial killer running around the state of Florida. Another writer has emerged from Auburn, Prioleau Alexander, and his first novel is You Want Fries With That: A White-Collar Burnout Experiences Life at Minimum Wage, a novel as twisted and hilarious as the best Dorsey. Ingersoll Rand: From Lotus Notes to Exchange in the Cloud
Wed, Jun 24th 2009 3:40a   Gregg Eldred
From CIO.com: One customer that's made the leap (to hosted e-mail) is Ingersoll Rand, a $13 billion industrial company with 60,000 employees that makes everything from golf carts (Club Car) to air conditioners (Trane). According to John Kalka, Ingersoll Rand's VP of technology deployment, the opportunity to move to a cloud-based e-mail arose in 2007, when the company was deciding whether or not to renew its contract with IBM for Lotus Notes. 40 Years Ago: The Cuyahoga River Catches Fire
Mon, Jun 22nd 2009 1:31p   Gregg Eldred
At 11:56 am on June 22, 1969, an oil slick caught fire on the Cuyahoga River just southeast of downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Cleveland's image is still scarred as people recall how "the river caught fire."  The 1969 fire is the most famous fire on the Cuyahoga River, even though a previous fire in 1952 on the Cuyahoga caused nearly thirty times the amount of damage. No press photo exists of the 1969 fire - news agencies used photos from the 1952 blaze. Yet the day after the 1969 river fire, the t [read] Keywords: php

The products were running very close until ChannelWeb looked at pricing: Consider a 100-user shop. Spring Break 2009 found the family and I spending a week on the island of St. John, in the American Virgin Islands. While there are plenty of sunny places, on or near an ocean, to spend a week, St. John has rocketed to the top of my list due to plenty of beaches from which to choose, excellent snorkeling, a nice variety of eating establishments, and the "difficulty" of reaching the island. Night of Thunder by Stephen Hunter

Stephen Hunter has turned out some excellent novels with his character, ex-Marine sniper, Bob Lee Swagger. All of the ones that I have read, and, granted, they are mainly the early novels, were believable, well-characterized thrillers. Novels which I have not hesitated to recommend to others. It was with great anticipation that I welcomed the latest novel from Stephen Hunter, Night of Thunder. Bob Lee Swagger's daughter, Nikki, is a reporter for a local newspaper in Bristol, Tennessee. You would have to be totally unaware if you haven't noticed that people get most of their music from sources other than traditional stores. One of the most popular methods is peer-to-peer networks, like LimeWire, Napster, BitTorrent, and others. Since the consolidation of radio stations into just a few corporate entities, new music from new bands takes a back seat to established ones and the programming of these radio stations is done outside of the listening area. Interesting article in that the author, David Williams, shows some love for Lotus Notes before launching into his take on a recent interview of Ray Ozzie and Google Wave. Long Lost by Harlan Coben

Authors who have a long running character can, at times, produce a novel that is viewed as less than stellar. Some of those authors can be criticized for phoning in their latest novel. Or the characters become tired and boring. Or the plots could be seen as less than optimal. Frankly, this happens to a lot of authors over the course of a series of novels. Michael Sampson: 7 Pillars Analysis of IBM
Fri, May 8th 2009 10:20a   Gregg Eldred
Michael Sampson's blog is one that I read on a regular basis; a nice mix of IT news and commentary. One of his latest posts deals with IBM and the offerings in the Lotus Software brand. IBM offers a tremendous range of technical capabilities to support shared access to team data that is stored in its products. And from a user and group perspective, this variety of approaches presents a huge problem—the cost of infinite opportunity! World's BEST Developer Troubleshooting Process
Wed, Mar 18th 2009 11:39p   Gregg Eldred
Yes, I still haunt the developerWorks:Lotus forums. Posted the other day, by Doug Finner, was this gem: We called it the Rubber Duck method of debugging. It goes like this: Beg, borrow, steal, buy, fabricate or otherwise obtain a rubber duck (bathtub variety) Place rubber duck on desk and inform it you are just going to go over some code with it, if that's all right. Explain to the duck what you code is supposed to do, and then go into detail and explain things line by line At some point yo [read] Keywords: ldd lotus

Microsoft Watch: Microsoft's 10 Lucky Breaks

Don't you sometimes enjoy a walk down memory lane? Today's stroll comes courtesy Microsoft Watch and their article, Microsoft's 10 Lucky Breaks: 7. Lotus skips Windows. Loyalty sometimes comes at a steep price. Lotus 1-2-3 was the spreadsheet king in the early 1990s. But Lotus stuck with DOS and bet on OS/2, a cooperative OS project between IBM and Microsoft. Crowdsourcing: Why the Power of the Crowd is Driving the Future of Business by Jeff Howe
Sun, Mar 8th 2009 11:19p   Gregg Eldred
Personally, I find the whole "Wisdom of the Crowd" theme fascinating. One of the major outcomes of the internet is that it has allowed more participation by the average person which can be tapped by solutions and companies that recognize that there are people willing to contribute (often times for free). This isn't new, it's just that the internet breaks down barriers to entry. But he seems to have found himself, writing a letter to American Airlines to get a refund of $392.68 for his flight from New York to Los Angeles. In Dear American Airlines, by Jonathan Miles, Bennie pens a 172 page missive justifying his refund. This particular flight is very important, as he has promised his estranged daughte [read] Keywords:

Unfortunately, all good things come to an end. Lotusphere 2009 is not immune to this. As a member of the Blogger Program at Lotusphere2009, I was invited to the Press and Analyst Briefing following the Social Software Keynote. First, as a consumer of much of the Lotus news, it is nice to see how the messages are perceived in the marketplace. Wed, Dec 10th 2008 10:39p   Gregg Eldred
This is something you don't see everyday; An argument for the mainframe in the midmarket. SearchCIO-Midmarket.com has an article, written by Elisabeth Horwitt, that provides a scenario for midmarket companies that outgrow their Windows server farms. For years, the mainframe has been associated with large enterprises, not only because it is powerful, but also because it is costly. But now, midmarket organizations are being pitched their own version of a mainframe that's powerful but not quite [read] Keywords: ibm enterprise linux server

If you take a look at Amazon.com's Travel books for the State of Florida, you will mostly see books on Walt Disney World, beaches, and Key West. A quick thought as I review the books that I read this year: Is it possible that the guest speaker for Business Development Day at Lotusphere 2009 could be better than last year's, Steven Johnson? I realize that there has been much discussion concerning the Opening and Closing General Session speakers from Lotusphere 2008, but, Steven was the best of the three and the one that had the biggest impact on me, long after the conference. One of the best reasons for visiting your local library is that they have all of their new books in one area (at least in my library). It makes it extremely easy to peruse all of the recent additions to their collection without having to walk all around looking at individual sections. Because of this, you can find books in genres that you may not normally read; in this case, the book was labeled "science fiction." I have long had an affinity for Palm devices, which has led me to my current smartphone, the Palm 755p. But, as everyone knows, the market hasn't been good to Palm lately. They are competing against the iPhone, Blackberry, and Android devices. In a quest to continue reading most of Dean Koontz' early novels, this one was written in 1991, I picked up Cold Fire. Jim Ironheart is a very unique person; A voice drives him to save people. He doesn't know when the voice will move him, but when he hears it, he is single minded in his desire to get to a specific place to rescue someone. SnTT: Automatically Changing Sametime Status
Thu, Oct 16th 2008 3:59p   Gregg Eldred
One of the questions I sometimes get asked after implementing Lotus Sametime is "Can Sametime automatically change my status after some time of inactivity?" This is a very useful feature, which would cut down on the number of times you ping someone, only to find out that they are out to lunch, in a meeting, or similarily indisposed. But can you do this in Sametime? Thankfully, the answer is "Yes," and there is a TechNote that spells it all out for you. If you didn't know, one of the people in the Lotus Community, Fraziska Tanner, rode out Hurricane Omar yesterday on the tiny island of Anguilla. Thankfully, she and her family are fine. However, if you were following her on Twitter, you would have gotten front row seats to the wrath of Omar. Following her in the midst of the hurricane was maddening. Google has invited you to search their oldest available index, from January 2001. My search term, lotusphere, resulted in some fun hits: Project "Yoda" - "is described as a suite of knowledge management capabilities for R5 that is intended to cement Lotus' leadership in the groupware market it inaugurated and still leads with 34 million seats." You may have wondered how some websites get cute little icons in front of their URLs. For example, some look like this: The default icon for a Domino website icon is what you see next to my name. Nice, but you probably will want to change it. That little icon is determined by favicon.ico, located in the Domino\Data\domino\html directory. You can use any 16x16 BMP file, rename it to "favicon.ico" (or, better, use an icon editor) and copy it into the Domino\Data\domino\html directory. Generation Kill by Evan Wright

Since HBO just finished running a seven part miniseries based on this book, I decided I would probably get more out of the miniseries by reading the book. As is the case in situations like this, you definitely get more out of the book than the television show. And in this case, it makes for a excellent, first person account of the opening months of the Iraq War. Prodigal Son by Thomas B. Cavanagh

I have a problem with novels written by Thomas B. Cavanagh. The first is that I can't seem to put them down. Every novel of his, I find that I need to finish them as quickly as I can. They interfere with sleep, lunch, and anything else that I may be doing. Once started, I discover that I keep turning them over in my mind. The second problem is that he writes about characters that you actually like, using dialog that is appropriate for the time and the character. As soon as I was notified that Ca [read] Keywords:

Very impressive. With the release of Notes/Domino 8.0.2, IBM published a TechNote yesterday that details some of the performance improvements they have added in the Notes Client 8.0.2 release. The software stack was optimized to streamline the loading of Java bundles during the initial launch of the Notes 8.0.2 client. SearchCIO.com has a blog entry looking for experiences with the iPhone in the enterprise: My impression is that the iPhone is still viewed by those in enterprise as a novelty, not a business tool. Domino Directory Is Using the Wrong Template
Fri, Jul 11th 2008 12:08a   Gregg Eldred
When discussing Domino upgrades with clients, the Domino Administrator will sometimes share an anecdote where he (or she) mistakenly upgraded the design of the Domino Directory or found that the design has been replaced with a different template. Usually these discussions elicit nervous laughter as they are the bane of the Administrator. If this happens to you, the first thing I recommend is a cleansing breath (you need to calm down and focus). Once you are calm (while tempting, this [read] Keywords: document domino ntf template lotususergroup.org server

SnTT: Enabling Domino SMTP TLS
Wed, Jul 9th 2008 11:28p   Gregg Eldred
First, what is SMTP TLS? [It is an] extension to the SMTP service that allows an SMTP server and client to use transport-layer security to provide private, authenticated communication over the Internet. This gives SMTP agents the ability to protect some or all of their communications from eavesdroppers and attackers . . . In many cases, [SMTP] communication goes through one or more router that is not controlled or trusted by either entity. Such an untrusted router might allow a third party [read] Keywords: agent connections document domino ibm lotus show-n-tell sntt security server smtp virus

House Bill to Legislate Preservation of White House E-Mail
Wed, Jul 9th 2008 11:08p   Gregg Eldred
While this in no means the end to the issue of missing White House e-mail, the House of Representatives today is debating a bill on preserving White House e-mail. The bill, HR 5811, also known as the "Electronic Communications Preservation Act," will "[. . . ] require preservation of certain electronic records by Federal agencies, to require a certification and reports relating to Presidential records, and for other purposes." The section concerning Presidential e-mail reads: (5) provisio [read] Keywords: application office

Alan Lepofsky Moves On
Wed, Jul 9th 2008 10:29p   Gregg Eldred
"Alan has left the building." But that doesn't mean that I can't share one of my "favorited" tweets from him: "Lotus Notes is easily the greatest product that not enough people in IT know about. Forms/views, selection formulas, acls,,replication, etc" I expect the same sort of tweets from him concerning Socialtext (I wonder how many hits that site has gotten since Alan's announcement?). Godspeed Alan. [read] Keywords: forms ibm lotus notes wiki

BillG and Microsoft Timeline
Tue, Jul 8th 2008 11:08p   Gregg Eldred
Interested in a walk down memory lane? The BBC has a timeline of Bill Gates and Microsoft. It may not be surprising, but while the early years were filled with some exciting anecdotes (retaining the rights to MS-DOS and assigning the internet "the highest level of importance"), the latter years are shown as defending anti-trust measures. SnTT: Another Red X Issue
Tue, Jul 8th 2008 11:08p   Gregg Eldred
An interesting twist the "Red X" issue: You forward an e-mail with an embedded .bmp image and the recipient gets the "Red X." Lotus has released a new TechNote that addresses this issue as it seems to occur in Releases 6, 6.5, 7, and 8. The Red X, in case you were wondering what it looks like: The solution is a workaround: Don't use the Forward button when forwarding a message with an embedded .bmp image. Instead, open the message and within the message body, right-click and sele [read] Keywords: ibm lotus show-n-tell sntt

Back from a Michigan Vacation
Tue, Jul 8th 2008 12:03a   Gregg Eldred
Last week, we took a little week long vacation through the state of Michigan. Thanks to Google Maps, you can see the route that we followed: View Larger Map After picking up a rented Chrysler Town and Country, giving my Jeep a much needed rest, we set out for our first stop: Frankenmuth. We've been there a few times in the past, so it was very familiar to us. However, we made a point to visit a museum that we had not seen in the past, Michigan's Own Military and Space Museum. Among the exhi [read] Keywords: lotusphere google php security wiki
