Back on the Ice in Antarctica
Mon, Dec 1st 2008 10:59p Gregg Eldred My friend, Dan, is working in Antarctica again this year. He is an air traffic controller, helping to land the aircraft (planes and helicopters) on, literally, an ice runway.
I think that he told me that internet connectivity isn't as good as it was last year (budget cuts?), so I don't think that he is blogging his adventures. But at least he found time to post some pictures. [read] Keywords: blogging

Tsar by Ted Bell
Mon, Dec 1st 2008 12:02a Gregg Eldred I was provided an advanced reading copy
of Tsar
by Ted Bell. This is the fifth novel in the Alex Hawke series and it continues
the tradition Bell has developed of action and suspense using plausible
plots concerning world events.
In Tsar, Alex Hawke, a modern James
Bond character, is recuperating on Bermuda after his injuries suffered
in the novel Spy.
During his recovery, he meets a beautiful Russian artist, Anastasia Korsakov.
As the novel progresses, you discover that Anastasia, "Asia"

What Does the Future Hold for Palm?
Wed, Nov 26th 2008 4:49p Gregg Eldred I have long had an affinity for Palm devices, which has led me to my current smartphone, the Palm 755p. But, as everyone knows, the market hasn't been good to Palm lately. They are competing against the iPhone, Blackberry, and Android devices. And the results haven't been pretty-Palm currently holds about 8.5% of the smartphone market, a distant third behind Apple and RIM.
An article on Internetnews.com is less than rosy about Palm's long term viability, saying:

Using a New Browser? You May Not Like On-line Shopping
Wed, Nov 26th 2008 3:49p Gregg Eldred Something I didn't think about: the "new" browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Safari may limit your enjoyment of on-line shopping this holiday season. From an article on Marketwatch.com:
The 2008 web browser explosion could not have come at a worse time: the most important online holiday shopping season ever. As a result, some online shoppers will be faced with website pages that load slowly, are missing text or graphics, or even fail to complete the checkout function.

Wed, Nov 26th 2008 1:59p Gregg Eldred In a quest to continue reading most
of Dean Koontz' early novels, this one was written in 1991, I picked up

Jim Ironheart is a very unique person; A voice drives him to save people.
He doesn't know when the voice will move him, but when he hears it, he
is single minded in his desire to get to a specific place to rescue someone.

e-Discovery And Apple
Wed, Nov 26th 2008 12:09a Gregg Eldred The Industry Standard has a very interesting, and cautionary, story concerning Apple and their lack of an e-mail retention policy.
According to a recent legal filing . . . in the Psystar vs Apple antitrust case, Apple employees are responsible for maintaining their own documents such as emails, memos, and voicemails. In other words, there is no company-wide policy for archiving, saving, or deleting these documents.

Watchers by Dean Koontz
Tue, Nov 25th 2008 11:49p Gregg Eldred A man is hiking in a remote area of
California when he discovers a dog. As Travis attempts to continue along
the path, the dog blocks him. When he tries to "outsmart" the
dog, it seems to be a step ahead of him, refusing to allow him to continue.
And then the woods get really quiet. The dog growls. The hair on the back
of Travis' neck rises, so does yours. Something very unpleasant is out
there, watching, stalking. Thus begins an incredible journey for Travis

Sunday PostSecret
Sun, Nov 16th 2008 10:40p Gregg Eldred Today's Sunday PostSecret is a good one:
While I haven't come across Post-It notes in any of the books I have borrowed from the library, I have come across bills, library cards, photos, and, most recently, a shipping order from Amazon.com (all of these items, I believe, were used as bookmarkers). Books: A Memoir by Larry McMurtry

A Memoir, by Larry McMurtry,

McMurtry has penned a book detailing his life with books; as a buyer and
seller of used, rare, and antique books and as a book lover. His life with
books started when he was the recipient of a wonderful gift from his cousin.

However, if you were following her on Twitter, you would have gotten front row seats to the wrath of Omar.
Following her in the midst of the hurricane was maddening. The tweets were few and far between, probably due to the weather, cell coverage, need for safety, etc. During the silence, I was afraid of t [read] Keywords: lotus

Reliving Past Lotusphere's, Google Style
Wed, Oct 8th 2008 10:39p Gregg Eldred Google has invited you to search their oldest available index, from January 2001. My search term, lotusphere, resulted in some fun hits:
Project "Yoda" - "is described as a suite of knowledge management capabilities for R5 that is intended to cement Lotus' leadership in the groupware market it inaugurated and still leads with 34 million seats." Was this a precursor to "Raven," which, I think, turned into Domino Discovery Server?

The Deceived by Brett Battles
Wed, Oct 1st 2008 11:29p Gregg Eldred I was very happy to see that Brett Battles
has penned a second novel featuring his "cleaner," Jonathan Quinn.
Quinn is hired to remove all traces of a crime or to make sure that there
are no loose ends. If there is a murder, he makes sure that the body is
not discovered and all traces of the deed are covered up. When he is done,
nothing can be traced to either him or his client.
The
Deceived opens with Quinn and
his assistant being called to dispose of a body that was found in a transcontine [read] Keywords: |

During the examination, applicants must demonstrate an understanding of basic U.S. civics, history, and government. The test changes, instituted by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), will affect millions of immigrants in the U.S. who intend to become American citizens. Readers can test their civic skills in a quiz provided at CitizenshipU.com.

Discussion Database - What is it Good For?
Thu, Sep 25th 2008 8:10p Gregg Eldred Probably the most popular discussion
databases are the forums
at developerWorks:Lotus. But
what about inside your organization? I'll wager that you have your fair
share of them, but when were they last updated? Have you moved that information
to wikis? Much like most Web 2.0 initiatives, where you are hoping for
collaboration and sharing, most of those discussion databases have probably
been updated by just a few people. I can give you several examples of discussion

New York Times: IBM threatens to leave standards bodies
Tue, Sep 23rd 2008 3:49p Gregg Eldred It appears that the ratification of OOXML as a standard has made IBM rethink its membership in a few standards bodies. From The New York Times:
IBM is threatening to leave organizations that set standards for software interoperability because of concerns that their processes are not always fair.
IBM published a new set of guidelines it plans to follow, which include encouraging standards bodies to have rules to protect their decisions from "undue influence," a clear reference to competitor [read] Keywords: ibm

Rumor: RIM to Support Mac
Tue, Sep 23rd 2008 8:59a Gregg Eldred From Ars Technica:
According to CIO, an anonymous source says that RIM will release a new set of tools to harmonize the BlackBerry with a Mac sometime in the first half of 2009. The tools will "address a number of longstanding complaints from Mac users," though details of the exact capabilities that RIM will bring to the table with its own software were not disclosed. The "Yellow Bubble" and A Lack of Participation
Sun, Sep 21st 2008 10:19p Gregg Eldred The "Yellow Bubble," or the
most vocal people that you see on PlanetLotus,
has me perplexed. Not only that, but you can add some percentage of the
total Notes users (somewhere around 140 million).
IdeaJam
is a good site for an example. From what I have seen, and there are others
can be much more specific, it appears to me that the same people contribute
and vote. I understand that there is no closed feedback loop from IBM/Lotus,
but why aren't more people contributing to IdeaJam? Specificall [read] Keywords: domino

Changing Your Sametime Password
Sat, Sep 20th 2008 8:59a Gregg Eldred Nearly all software that requires a password allows the user to change their password within the application. Except Sametime (to my knowledge). I realize that the Sametime password is the same as the Lotus Notes internet password, and some education of the users will need to occur. But why can't we provide the user a way to change their Sametime password from within Sametime?
An excellent idea that deserves more attention.

Cleveland Geek Dinner or A Walk Down Memory Lane
Fri, Sep 19th 2008 2:19p Gregg Eldred One of the "issues" with Geek Dinners, especially with people that have been in the business for a while (okay, a long while), is that computer trivia rears its ugly head. Case in point - we were talking about early personal computers, and I brought up this little beauty:
Yes, kids, that is the Plus Hardcard 20. The "20" means 20MB. From a description at the Personal Computer Museum:
The HardCard was essentially a smaller version of the Q500, designed to fit in an ISA slot, with an emb [read] Keywords: lotusphere

The Bloggers Roundtable, populated by the individuals linked above, seemed

Mixed Reactions Then "Goodbye" to the Seinfeld/Gates Ads
Wed, Sep 17th 2008 10:39p Gregg Eldred A new Microsoft ad featuring Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates has been released. I have seen the first ad, showing the two shopping for shoes, a few times. Not surprisingly, I am not alone when I say "I don't get it." The first ad of the campaign debuted September 4 during NBC's broadcast of the Giants and Redskins game. SnTT: Outbound SMTP Authentication
Wed, Sep 17th 2008 10:09p Gregg Eldred A question was posted to the Notes listserv today:
We are trying to configure a Domino 8 server to change how it handles outbound mail. Currently, it routes to a smarthost that just accepts all messages from the Domino server's address. The administrator for the smarthost is reconfiguring and they want the Domino server to authenticate when it connects to the smarthost (which is how their clients are required to send outbound messages).
