Tip Of the Day : How to un-break the Notes client
Giulio

I recently had the unpleasant experience of dealing with 8.0.2 client. Yeah, I know, why aren't you using 8.5.x ? Because it's the SOE here, and I don't control it. Anyway. There is a neat trick where you can totally screw your Notes client. And I think the culprit is the Teamstudio install database. Now, this is not the fault of Teamstudio, but how Lotus Notes deals with databases that do stuff on the DatabaseOpen event like open a modal dialog window.

Like most of you, you'll have a bunch Notes document windows open during the day, and then it's time to go home, and you'll just shut down Notes leaving those windows open. Because it's really convenient that Notes can open them back up again for you when you login again. This is fine and dandy in most cases, but if you have a database that launches a dialog window when you open it, your nightmare will begin the next time you login. The Notes client will startup but not let you do anything. It will sit there staring back at you not telling you anything about this rogue dialog window in the UI that you can't access or see, because Notes is focused on the "Home" or "Workspace" page. You can't control-tab to it, and you sure as hell can't click on the offending window tab to try and bring the dialog window to the current context so you can dismiss the dialog and get on with life.

I thought putting this ini setting would stop Notes from trying to launch windows and authenticate from my previous session. No, that's not it. The only solution is to delete the "workspace" directory under your data directory in order to blow away previously opened windows. This scorched earth approach is clumsy but it will allow me to run the notes client again.

It's a heavy handed approach though, as it also resets your workspace, db icons, as well as UI configurations for mail among other things. But I can get Notes working again and add icons etc.

There might be more finesse one can get from surgically tampering with the workspace directory, but if you have the time to invest in this please publish it. I had tried to make an effort myself to find some documentation, but I shouldn't be so naive to expect that. In typical IBM style, IBM have ramped up the complexity, not documented any of this in a sensible way that makes it easier for the general techie to get their heads around. The Notes client configuration is now a horrendous cacophony of XML soup and directories.

Support slave labour : Buy an iPhone today!

I just read about the ongoing work practices of Foxconn in the local paper here. The most shocking revelation for me is the estimated cost of production of the ubiquitous iPhone. Your beloved iPhone is manufactured for under $10 / unit. In fact the report by market research firm iSuppli suggests that your 4G iPhone is produced for $6.54 (USD) per unit! "Market research firm iSuppli estimates that a 4G iPhone costs $US6.54 to make in China, or just around 1.1 per cent of its retail price, while [read] Keywords: apple iphone

Wish we had this for Australian Government IT Spending.
Tue, Sep 21st 2010 3:27a   Giulio Campobassi
I recently discovered through Brian Benz the Federal IT Portfolio dashboard by the US Government. All sorts of interesting factoids and trends about IT spending. Exposing this sort of data for general consumption would be quite useful to vendors and also help level the playing field in Australian tendering. The data is published currently via the tendering website, but it's as easy and intuitive to use as Domino developers trying to build websphere apps. Australia has only recently been introdu [read] Keywords: domino websphere

Mitigating Tween Risk in IT Projects.
Mon, Sep 13th 2010 4:26a   Giulio Campobassi
Apparently, tweets about "Justin Bieber" require it's own racks of servers to manage the noise traffic, according to Gizmodo. This says a couple of things to me. Firstly, if you're one of those people who think they can architect a concept of the next social media wave, you need to consider the sociological phenomenons like Justin Bieber that can sink your infrastructure in hours. So you need to manage the risk of 100 million tweens bashing your system all at once with systems loads that re [read] Keywords: collaboration twitter vm

Ok folks, this is a touchy one, comment #35 by Matt Cunneen, MD of Satsuma, on Ed's blog makes a well over due response about IBM's conduct with its Business Partners. Satsuma, similar to other business partners here in Australia, are seeing the action out there on the battle field, and like any business are moving with market forces independent of their influence to better insure their viability. Satsuma, from appearances is doing no different than IBM, and if you read through their site, hav [read] Keywords: domino ibm lotus blogging community

Super Broadband + Virtualisation = Gaming revolution
Sat, Aug 14th 2010 4:26a   Giulio Campobassi
I recently heard about onlive and GaiKai. This is perhaps the next big thing since MMO games came into existence around 1997 with Ultima Online. Rather than buy the console or software, you simply play a virtualised session through any capable device be it mobile/droid/"i" device, PC or MAC. You need at least 5-10Mbits to play, as the video is literally streamed to you from the host server, whilst your inputs are relayed back, processed and returned to you (and anyone else in the virtual vicin [read] Keywords: iphone mac mobile server wiki
