Apologies for the lack of content this month. A lot has been going on at work and at home, which has been the main reason for the lack of new "stuff" appearing. Once I gather my thoughts, I'll post an update soon. [read] Keywords:

The details haven't been finalised yet, as Paul & the ILUG crew are still putting the finishing touches to this years agenda, but a rough list of speakers and sessions for ILUG2008 has been published over at Paul's site. The sharp eyed amongst you may have noticed that yours truly is speaking at this years event. ILUG2008 - Booked
Thu, Feb 28th 2008 1:50a   Frank Docherty
The registration confirmation email has been received, and the flights + hotel have been booked. I'll be staying at the Days Inn on Talbot Street, which is probably miles away from the conference centre, but I don't care, 'cos it's Dublin and it will be in June! I'll be arriving on the morning of Tuesday 03 June 2008. I'm looking forward to seeing you all there. [read] Keywords: email

There and back again ...
Tue, Feb 12th 2008 4:34p   Frank Docherty
Or not, as the case may be. The Tolkien estate is suing New Line Cinema for damages. Allegedly, New Line haven't paid the Tolkien Estate a penny from the $3bn (or so) profit from the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. (Shame on them if they haven't!) The plaintiffs seek more than $150 million in compensatory damages, unspecified punitive damages and a court order giving the Tolkien estate the right to terminate any rights New Line may have to make films based on other works by the author, i [read] Keywords:

Error:File does not exist -- after migrating a certifier to the CA Process
Fri, Feb 8th 2008 10:12a   Frank Docherty
It's been my experience in the past that whenever I've been looking for a particular O or OU certifier ID, I can never find it. It's either been stored on a network share that I don't have easy access to, or it's on a PC other than the one that I want to access. So, one of the many things I like to do as Notes & Domino admin is to remove the need for physical access to certifier ID files, and migrate them to the CA Process. It's quick, it's clean, and I can control who has access to t [read] Keywords: admin , domino , lotus , notes , ntf , template , database , network , server

Talking of Album Covers

Since everyone else seems to be doing this, why the heck not. Here's my album cover:- EDIT: After reading Chris Linfoot's post, I have decided pull the image I used for my album cover, after checking the copyright status of my randomly chosen album artwork. Suffice to say that there were restrictions on altering the image, (no derivative works), so I will respect the owners rights and remove the modified album image. Minimum privileges needed to register a new user
Sun, Feb 3rd 2008 11:12a   Frank Docherty
I recently had to delegate the creation of Lotus Notes user accounts to several of our helpdesk staff, so that I could be freed up to work on other project based activities. In order to give the helpdesk staff just enough rights to perform this function, here's what I did. So as to avoid any confusion, and so that the same staff could also perform Lotus Notes password recovery at a later date, I registered a new user id for them called User Registration. I then setup a location doc [read] Keywords: acl , administration , document , domino , lotus , notes , database , password , security , server

If your a fan of either the Alien or Predator movie franchises, like I am, then you may well be disappointed with the latest offering "AvP:Requiem". I think I just expected that wee bit more from this installment, as I really enjoyed the last offering "Aliens vs Predator". I felt that this movie didn't really deliver on what I'd come to expect from the franchise. Still, it was entertaining enough to sit through all 94mins of it. My apologies if the RSS feed from this Blog goes a bit "nuts" in the short term. Upgrading a Domino Server with a customised Domino Directory Template
Thu, Jan 10th 2008 2:05p   Frank Docherty
One of the things that I have learned from my Domino 6.5.4 to Domino 7.0.3 migration project work this week, is that you need to take care when you are upgrading servers which are using a customised Domino Directory template. If you don't, you could easily lose any custom additions to your Domino directory, and potentially corrupt entries within it (worst case scenario!). During the recommended sequence of upgrade steps, you will need to update the design of your Domino Directory to the lates [read] Keywords: document , domino , nd7 , notes , ntf , template , server

No, this doesn't relate to one of the projects that I have on the go at work just now, but it does relate to something that I posted about in my 2007 year end review. I've been working approx 360 miles away from home, during weekdays for about the last 6 months. In that time a lot has changed for Lynne (my Wife) and I, which has made working away from home during that time pretty tough to bear. Life is slowly getting back to normal around here, now that all of the Christmas and New Year festivities have passed. So much so, that I've started working on documentation for some projects at work, involving a Domino 6.5.4 to 7.0.3 migration (I did press them to go 8.0.1, but would they listen to me?), a complete user migration to a new OU structure, and a step-by-step breakdown of the Lotus Notes password recovery process. I think that this will "officially" be my first ever yearly review , so please bear with me if I waffle on a bit ... Work Life It's been a funny old year for me work wise. In April I left the relative safety of a full time job, to dip my toe back into the Notes & Domino Admin contract/freelance market within the UK. My darling wife bought me the most wonderful gift for Christmas this year. It's something that I had been promising myself for a wee while now, but alas, my dearest beat me to it. Initially, I wanted to jump in at the deep end of the Digital SLR market and get myself either a Canon or Nikon 10+ Mega Pixel body and some decent lenses.
