XPages: Dojo vs. Jquery... and JQuery is for n00bs
Erik Brooks

No, I didn't title this blog post to insult those that use JQuery. I simply wanted to share this article, which I found funny (though there are some truths inside.)

WARNING: Foul language ahead.

http://bobremeika.com/2011/03/03/jquery-is-for-n00bs/

People are making many XPages and custom controls, and that's a Very Good Thing. But some of these incorporate Dojo while some use JQuery. I want to re-emphasize my recommendation that those of us doing XPage development continue to use Dojo as our preferred framework. It will be better for us, the platform, and IBM in the long run.  I've shared on my blog information about all of the engineering work going on with IBM and Dojo/XPages/Domino/DDE integration. If you bother to learn Dojo you are doing yourself a very good long-term favor.

And if you haven't looked in awhile, the documentation for Dojo is MUCH better than it was several months ago.

It's been awhile. And $Readers fields.

Man, it's been awhile since I've blogged. I should really get back on that. And in case you've ever considered removing the Summary flag on a $Readers field (while leaving the "type: Readers" flag intact) to squeeze in a little more data, don't do it. Bad Things happen. [read] Keywords:

8.5.3: GetItemValue() gets MUCH better
Mon, Aug 1st 2011 6:04a   Erik Brooks
First, the standard beta disclaimer: "This is beta software from IBM and does not represent a commitment, promise or legal obligation by IBM to deliver, in a future release of Notes/Domino or Lotus Notes Traveler, any material, code or functionality described/shown in this presentation." We've been working a particular PMR for nearly a year with IBM. After a lot of high-level attention it was finally made an SPR, and finally has a fix in the latest beta of 8.5.3. "XPages are not modern"
Thu, Jul 14th 2011 8:28a   Erik Brooks
I keep hearing a small set of individuals saying this: "XPages aren't modern. They're an older version of JSF." That statement is partially true. The current versions of JSF are (from Wikipedia): JSF 2.1 (2010-10-22) — Current version. Second maintenance release of 2.0. Only very minor amount of spec changes.[1][2] JSF 2.0 (2009-06-28) — Major release for ease of use, enhanced functionality, and performance. Coincides with Java EE 6. 8.5.3: App Dev keeps moving forward
Mon, Jun 13th 2011 11:35a   Erik Brooks
Beta testers and design partners can finally blog about 8.5.3. IBM is pushing hard on XPages, and is doing some awesome things in 8.5.3, particularly in the realm of application development. Below are some of the new features that I found exciting. Before I start, let's get the legal junk out of the way: "This is beta software from IBM and does not represent a commitment, promise or legal obligation by IBM to deliver, in a future release of Notes/Domino or Lotus Notes Traveler, any ma [read] Keywords: admin domino ibm lotus lotusscript notes traveler xpages application applications css database development dojo eclipse integration java javascript mobile server widget widgets

The Future of NSF? 16/32/64K limits GONE and dynamic querying, filtering, and sorting
Thu, Mar 17th 2011 10:35a   Erik Brooks
What are the main complaints people have with NSF? Indexing and 16/32/64K storage limits.  What if I'm a developer new to Domino? I can write XPages with Java and JS. But the indexing facility uses these "View" things, with this "@Formula" language. Hmm...   IBM could address all of these problems together. NSF actually scales very nicely with huge amounts of data in fields, thanks to Rich Text fields. At my company we actually have some functions, "bigGetItemValue()" and "bigReplac [read] Keywords: domino ibm nsfdb2 ods rich text richtext xpages db2 interface java network openntf xml

IBM's Most Twittering Software Division...
Wed, Mar 2nd 2011 7:10p   Erik Brooks
According to my extremely rough research based on this list here...    The IBM Lotus accounts have more followers than any of the other brands except for Cognos. More than Websphere, DB2, Rational, and Tivoli.   And thanks to Ed I'd wager that no other IBM software division emits tweets more often, or from as high up in the organization. :-)  [read] Keywords: ibm lotus db2 tivoli twitter websphere

NSF conflicts: Nasty bug with $ConflictAction="3" (Merge/no conflicts)
Mon, Feb 21st 2011 1:56a   Erik Brooks
We uncovered a nasty bug recently with $ConflictAction="3". This field is applied to documents if your form is set to the replication conflict setting of "Merge/No Conflicts."  The worst part about this bug is that a "pull only" replication can actually change data on the server you're pulling from. Which should never be possible.. The problem is best illustrated by example:   1. Create a doc on server A with $ConflictAction="3" and a field called "Text" with some text in it.  [read] Keywords: ibm bug server

DDE on Mac
Tue, Feb 15th 2011 6:03a   Erik Brooks
"Why IBM needs DDE on Mac" is being discussed on Bill's blog:  http://www.billmal.com/billmal/billmal.nsf/dx/02142011062912PMWMAVJT.htm?opendocument&comments#anc1  My understanding of Mac marketshare is that it is currently at ~10%. But that is irrelevant. What is relevant is this quote from David (The Notes Guy In Seattle): "...I was part of the college day sponsored by GBS and while I was there at least a third of the college student attendees could not participate in the pre-L [read] Keywords: ibm lotusphere notes xpages mac
