XPages Invades MWLUG
David Leedy

I'm really excited to be making my first trip to Cleveland this week for the 2nd Annual MWLug User Conference.

The conference, on Thursday and Friday and is jam packed with Administration and Development sessions.

If you're interested in getting up to speed on XPages, this is the place to be!

I'm doing 2 sessions:
Introduction to XPages
You've heard about XPages now come and see how easy it is to get started. Leave behind your Navigators and Outlines and come see the X Side of the world. Don't forget to pack your Domino Objects and @Formulas because you can still use them to create applications that run on both the Web and the Notes Client.

XPages: Beyond the Introduction
You've seen XPages, but how do you best use it? Come to this session to how to integrate the BluePrint CSS FrameWork to help speed up your application development. See how to best use Custom Controls to control now only your layout but also your content. Learn some other tricks of the trade to make your applications POP.

In the first session I assume you know nothing about XPages and we go from there. In the second session I attempt to go further and help you establish a comfort zone with how XPages works, how you do certain things with it, and how you move around designer.

In addition to my stuff there's going to be a hands on workshop that looks really interesting.  I highly recommend stopping by for this if you want to start playing with XPages during the event.

XPages Workshop: Building a Simple Application - Michael McGarel and Roy Rumaner
In this unique DIY ("develop it yourself") workshop, new XPages developers can come in and build an XPages application on their own laptops. Developers work at their own pace as they follow the step-by-step instructions (similar to the Lotusphere labs). Mike and Roy are the "proctors," available for answering questions and providing hints. A true community learning experience!

Richard bring to the table information that I wish I had when I was first starting out. I'll be looking forward to this one to see what I know or have missed.

Starting XPages? Avoid These 10 XPages Gotchas - Richard Sharpe
Starting with a *very* brief intro to how XPages work (so no experience neccessary) I'll be covering the pitfalls that have cost Notes developers several hours in investigation before finding the correct solution. So whether it's interpreting what Designer tells you to what it actually means; interpreting what specific errors (or where no errors are apparent but the XPage doesn't work); or why some Javascript only works in certain contexts, I'll be looking at issues that cause beginners pain, why they occur, how to recognize them and resolve them.

I'll be talking a little about Server Side JavaScript in my sessions.  The first thing I'll say is that it's really not that scary.  The second thing I'll say is to go to Scott Good's session. I know I'll be there.

What You Need to Know to Get Started with Server-Side JavaScript - Scott Good
Underneath the skin, most XPages applications make extensive use of Server-Side JavaScript (SSJS), a hybrid of conventional JavaScript, @Formulas and LotusScript specific to the Domino platform. Although confusing at first, seasoned Notes developers with a basic understanding of JavaScript quickly find themselves able to use SSJS to do things in a fraction of the time needed to do them using conventional web development techniques. In this session you will get an overview of SSJS, how it is used in XPages, and some of the key components you'll need to be familiar with to work easily and effectively in this new language.

If you ever wanted to meet someone from the future, then come and meet Tim Tripcony and find out what's possible if you really want to push XPages to the limits.  And who knows, maybe he'll even share the formula for transparent aluminum if we're lucky.

XPages: The Evolution of Possible - Tim Tripcony
XPages do not just provide a new way of developing the same Notes/Domino applications we always have; instead, they unlock a whole new realm of possibility, allowing us to include features in our applications that were previously considered difficult... if not impossible. In this session we will explore five pillars of functionality that will not merely make your application interfaces appear more modern - they will instantly transform how you, your users, and your organization as a whole view the Lotus Notes and Domino platform.

Not an XPages session itself, but you're not going far in XPages without a good understanding of some core web technologies.  As a Notes Client Developer I've not used a ton of web stuff so I'm really looking forward to Brandt's session.

Web Technologies Every Domino Developer Should Know - Brandt Fundak
XPages in Notes/Domino 8.5 has fundamentally changed how we should look at Domino development. For Domino developers who do not have experience with Web 2.0 technologies however, these changes can be daunting and can make some of the under-the-hood development in XPages seem overwhelming. This presentation serves as an icebreaker for Domino developers who want to learn about Web 2.0, but find the vast ocean of information available overwhelming. Topics will include, XML, XML namespaces, JavaScript, CSS and AJAX.

Hope to see a lot of people there!  If you see me please say hello!

As I type this I'm on an AirTran plane heading home from Atlanta. I splurged and upgraded myself to Business class so I could do some actual work. (Don't worry John. Won't try and expense that. haha) Currently AirTran has free in flight wifi sponsored by Google Chrome. Ok that's fun, I'll admit it. So I fired it up as did 5 others in business class and we all were just surfing away.... Until it stopped working!! I think interest in XPages is growing.
Tue, Nov 30th 2010 4:46p   David Leedy
November has turned into another record breaking month for NotesIn9. I want to once again thank everybody for watching. I hope the videos continue to be of value. I especially want to thank Jeremy Hodge for contributing his Java Series and also my friends who help me when I get stuck and whose advice typically gets turned into new shows. I know my little site is NOT an accurate measurement of actual interest in XPages technologies. But it's at least an anecdotal measurement I th [read] Keywords: xpages java

Lotusphere Speaking
Sun, Nov 21st 2010 2:03p   David Leedy
We're coming up to the time where we're are going to find out who is selected to speak at Lotusphere and who is not. Last year I had the privilege of speaking at Lotusphere with Declan Lynch on my favorite topic, XPages. I also got to present at SpeedGeeking. I had a lot of fun, so naturally I submitted a couple of sessions to speak again. Whether I will or not I have no idea. XPages is the hot topic this year, so who knows how I'll stack up from the Lotusphere "Powers that [read] Keywords: lotus lotusphere xpages blogger community wiki

Lotus Community
Mon, Nov 15th 2010 2:42p   David Leedy
One of the neat things about the Lotus Community is that there are these monthly Web Meetings that take place on a Tuesday every month. These meetings are put on by Joyce Davis of IBM/Lotus. She leads the "Technical Information and Education Community". How cool is that for a job? Especially in the Social and collaborative world of today? Basically it seems to be the job of her team to not only create information to help us do our jobs, but also engage us as partners to help m [read] Keywords: ibm lotus xpages community email facebook java podcast wiki

XPages Documentation Improvements
Tue, Nov 9th 2010 8:05a   David Leedy
Just about anybody who has used XPages has probably at some point or another tried to use the documentation and found it.... let's just say "lacking". Well now's the time to do something positive to try and improve it. It looks like THIS WEEK there's a discussion about this over at LotusUserGroup.org. Please take some time and head here to discuss ways to improve the XPages documentation. I figure it's like voting, if you don't take time to try and improve it, t [read] Keywords: xpages lotususergroup.org

NotesIn9 Celebrates best month ever!
Wed, Oct 27th 2010 9:10p   David Leedy
I don't focus too much on stats, but even I couldn't miss the fact that downloads of the NotesIn9 videos are going through the roof. I was always really happy with the response, but as it stands now we're very close to doubling my previous best month ever way back in February 2010. I'm seeing a substantial increase in the older shows, especially the XPages episodes are reaching new monthly highs, but I'm really surprised how many downloads I'm seeing on the 3 new Extended Edit [read] Keywords: xpages java

How I make ScreenCasts for NotesIn9
Tue, Oct 26th 2010 8:41a   David Leedy
With IBM's launch of their VideoFest event today I thought I'd take a couple of minutes to describe my process of creating the NotesIn9 screencasts in case that might help anyone. Keep in mind that I like to add slides to my screencasts and attempt to keep the same feel that a Lotusphere session might have. Slides aren't a requirement for VideoFest and there are a lot of great videos out there that don't have slides. I've found that the key to getting the best quality is t [read] Keywords: domino ibm lotusphere facebook google laptop mac vm

Announcing - XPages.TV
Sun, Oct 17th 2010 8:57p   David Leedy
This Friday on the This Week in Lotus podcast I announced the creation of a new website for all to use. XPages.TV My intention for this site is to be the home of not just the NotesIn9 shows about XPages topics, but that is will contain links to any other videos about XPages on the net. One of the problems with NotesIn9 in it's current form, is that older shows are still relevant, but might not be easy to find due to the date driven nature of a podcast. So my intention w [read] Keywords: lotus xpages community openntf podcast

Wed, Oct 13th 2010 10:15p   David Leedy
I've been trying to clean up a couple of things inside the NotesIn9 Studios. I'm still remastering old shows to make them iPad and iPhone4 compatible and looking for improvements to my backend workflow which is WAY more painful then it should be. doh! Anyway, I while I was at it I thought I'd post an updated list of all the NotesIn9 shows that are related specifically to XPages. 001 - Repeat Controls 002 - Busting the Rip and Replace Myth 003 – Basic Searching [read] Keywords: agent notes xpages java twitter xml
