This evening, I'm upgrading a modern operating system, and it displays the progress bar below. What's important here? It gives you two (equally) importantbits of information: A) What the install's doing at the moment, and; B) Where we are in the overall install process.
I know this goes against the "give the user flashy dialogs that distract them and don't tell them where they are in the install" meme, but you really really need to go (back) to this.
