IdeaJam rocks! Buy it. | Now: Why I’m not a top contributor anymore.
Craig Wiseman

I'm in a grumpy mood this week, I guess. For some reason, this post by Serdar Basegmez just resonated with me.

I have a bunch of ideas over there. Here's a link to my ideas over there. I used to try and come up with ones that would improve IBM's product and address real issues that I see day-to-day at client sites.

You may not be aware of this, but IBM is a for-profit company. That means that it owns Notes, Domino, Portal, Connections, etc. and makes money selling licenses and (more importantly) selling hardware to run it on and consultants to install/maintain/Migrate them to new versions. It has business partners that it tolerates, and they tend to make money in the niches that IBM doesn't feel like competing in. Like greenfield Notes/Domino sales, for instance.

OpenNTF is a great thing, and IBM is finally providing them with the support they have deserved since day one.

IBM has hordes of truly brillant folks. But one thing that strikes me is that IBM doesn't listen to it's customers. They prefer to take the line that they are leading their customers. Be that as it may. I just want to point out that, for example, taking one of your leading product sets and letting it out to dry for 5 years, then saying - "folks want things that Connections and Portal provide more, see - they're buying more of it". Isn't really leadership, it's throttling one product set because you want the other to succeed.

Back to my topic. As mentioned, I have quite a few  ideas over at IdeaJam. I made a cutoff at 16 votes and thought I'd review the status of them below:

When trying to sell Notes/Domino it'd be really helpful if the standard templates (Discussion/DocLibrary/Journal/Team Room, etc.) were updated to a modern Look & Feel and looked/worked work consistently between the Notes client and web. Maybe a little ajax-y?
Little/None
For-profit IBM appears to be happy with not-for-profit OpenNTF making it's platform more palatable to potential customers.

For smaller sites (50-200 users), it would be extremely useful to be able to install Domino (mail), sametime (chat), and Quickr on one server.

You should via policy be able to completely control what application is shown when logging into Notes. This was traditionally called the Welcome Page.
Example 1: When  users in the '*/Bob Costas Who?' OU start notes, it should display the frameset "CMA Welcome" from the local database CMA.nsf, rep ID 1322134132:23414321.

It doesn't make a lot of sense to me to have contacts in a separate database that isn't replicated to the server automatically.  Sync'ing them just seems like a absolute kludge.
There are ways to address the security issues with allowing delegation of contacts. Given the vast creativity of the community ...
Nope. We're actually in a far, far worse place.

Now we have local names.nsf as the only place for locations, connections, accounts, etc. AND we've got a strange sync process that works OK, for the most part. (Just remember to delete all contacts from your mailfile BEFORE you upgrade from Notes 7, unless you like having duplicates.

And journal? Used to be able to sync it to the mailfile as well. Not anymore, sorry.

For many users, It's easier to move from Office 2000/2003 to Symphony than to Office 2007, but it would be almost transparent if IBM made an optional menu (File, Edit, etc) that mimicked the Office 2000/2003 menu structure. If you're mad at Carrier IQ, then you are doing exactly what the carriers want you to. The surprising thing is that the ire has been directed at Carrier IQ themselves. Why? If someone runs you over in their car, you don't write a stern letter to Ford. Carrier IQ made and sold an invasive piece of software, certainly. But they didn't install it on your phone. So, we've waited for years for IBM to update Domino's SSL/TLS implementation. There have been other ideas on this expressed. Now, it seems that the implementation is vulnerable... and since we don't have current TLS options, we have no native Domino solution. For you folks in Irene's path, I certainly "feel your pain". Yep, that lil red dot was me in 2008 when Gustav hit. In the northeastern quadrant of the storm (always the worst part of the storm). I was a bit further away from Ike (2008), Katrina, and Rita( 2005), so all we got then was heavy rain & moderate winds. The best thing to do in a hurricane is NOT be in its path. You can always rebuild a building, but people ... not so much. That's one reason I like hurricanes better than e [read] Keywords: python wiki
