OGS Demos Part 4 - Notes and iNotes
Fri, Jan 20th 2012 8:43a   Chris Reckling
Orlando, FL - Finishing up my series on what actually was demo'd at the Lotusphere 2012 Opening General Session, we conclude with Notes and iNotes, along with xPages applications. You can blame me for putting this section last. I have always felt that you need to keep the show building to a big finish; the downside to this strategy is that people try to derive hidden meaning from the placement in the program. I did see a handful of nervous tweets from backstage so I tried to let those following [read] Keywords: connections domino inotes ldd lotus lotusphere notes notes client sametime xpages application applications email firefox mobile network vm

OGS Demos Part 3
Wed, Jan 18th 2012 8:23a   Chris Reckling
Continuing my series of blog posts on what actually was demo'd during the Opening General Session at Lotusphere 2012. Between the "Ron demo" on mobile apps, and the "Brian demo" covering the Customer Experience Suite and inject social everywhere, Kurt De Ruwe from Bayer talked about their experiences in deploying Connections in order to "take advantage of all of their collective knowledge and expertise". Continuing on with the Opening General Session demo summary. Part 1, which covers Connections, IBM Docs, and Connections Mail is here. After Suzanne's demos were done, Jeff Schick sums it up and introduces the next section. Because the activity stream and embedded experiences are based on Open Social standards, the expectation is for a broad developer eco-system to build custom applications that extend it beyond what IBM provides out of the box. Lake Buena Vista, FL. I've been in Florida since last Wednesday, Jan 11, preparing demos for the Lotusphere 2012 Conference. Not just me of course, but a whole team who have been working together for the past few months to define and refine the demo flows. On site, we started on Thursday setting up our private network and making servers happy so we could practice the demos. Things are coming along quite nicely and we even had some time to put in a couple of amusing (at least to us) parts. N [read] Keywords: ldd lotus lotusphere network server vista

What’s Happening in the UX Lab?
Tue, Jan 10th 2012 11:03a   Chris Reckling
The UX Lab is a great way to contribute to our product design efforts as well as experience various prototypes and 'in progress' work. We'd love to hear from you and this year it is a bit different from the past few Lotuspheres. Instead of scheduling half hour blocks of time to meet with someone, we're adopting a 'drop-in' model. That means you can come any time and stay for 5 min or 1/2 hour or any time in between. Tyler and I will be manning the Mobile station. Mobile UX 2011 in Review
Fri, Jan 6th 2012 11:22a   Chris Reckling
Usually I don't write these "year in review" posts, maybe because I'm always looking ahead to the next project, the next challenge. However, it is useful to look back and reflect on the past accomplishments that we all worked so hard to get done. I believe 2011 was one of the more eventful years for me, primarily because of the nature of the mobile marketplace and how fast you need to move - that means a lot of releases in a short amount of time. At Lotusphere 2011, we said that we would [read] Keywords: connections ibm ldd lotus lotusphere notes odf sametime symphony traveler blackberry development mobile

Post Holiday Device - What’s you plan?
Fri, Dec 9th 2011 8:23a   Chris Reckling
This year, I'm guessing there will be a lot of tablets under the tree/bush. And there are a lot of options - just stop into your favorite electronics store to see the variety. Of course, there is the iPad...then about 400 other Android devices, in all price ranges. The Android tablets also come in many different sizes - I saw a display for Samsung that had 4, 5, 7, 8.9, and 10.1 inch options - and prices. In addition, for Android, some are running version 2.x and some are on 3.x. As many of you already know, IBM released new Sametime Chat apps for iOS and Android. Congratulations to the team, including designers Tyler Walters and Carrie Tracey. For Android, we did some visual design updates to bring it more in line with the direction that Traveler and Connections are moving in. We're going for a consistent brand experience across the apps and device types, while providing tight integration with the platforms on which the apps run. When we released the Connections apps for iOS, Blackberry, and Android this summer, we held back on releasing an iPad specific app. As lead designer, Marty Moore, has pointed out on his blog, trying to make a phone app expand to fit the larger screen just doesn't work very well. So, we took the time to make an iPad specific UI. An update is available in the Apple app store today. Congratulations to Marty and the dev and PM teams! This year in UX, right after Lotusphere, we consolidated a lot of different design efforts on mobile into a single UX team, which I lead. So far, we've done some amazing work and the designs are starting to permeate into other parts of the collaboration portfolio. We already shipped Connections apps to the app stores for Blackberry, Android, and iOS. More to come on that front later...along with Sametime client updates. We've been busy in mobile-land this year and you've already seen some of the results - in July IBM Connections apps were released to the Apple appstore, Android Marketplace, and Blackberry App World. "Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end.” - Seneca As an earthquake rumbled up the east coast of the USA from Virginia to Boston, word spread that Mary Beth Raven, UX Designer for IBM Lotus, was taking on a new challenge with another company. One of our missions this year is to expand our methods for gathering feedback on our products as we are in the early design stages (or even when we're in the middle of it!). To that end, the UX user research team set up a community on Lotus Greenhouse to help us reach out, called the Online UX Lab. During Lotusphere 2011, Andy Schirmer on my team, did a presentation, AD504, Best Practices for Mobile User Experience Design. Jessica Peter, now on my mobile UX team, helped put it together. This presentation was a result of their work in 2010 on formulating a user experience strategy for mobile, much like we had done for the desktop, using One UI. IBM Project Vulcan at Lotusphere
Mon, Jan 24th 2011 6:02a   Chris Reckling
As you probably know, last year at Lotusphere 2010 IBM introduced a vision for the future of collaboration, called IBM Project Vulcan. I led the team that put that demo together, and it really was a team effort across the organization, to express in visuals (and code) what we see as a new way to work - what is now called "social business". We talked about 4 principles guiding us: Continuity, Convergence, Opportunities, and Innovation. I'm not going to recap all of that. Press release here. Get that iPad Look in the Notes client
Tue, Jan 4th 2011 8:23a   Chris Reckling
I recently got an ipad at home and have been using the mail client to get my yahoo, gmail, and Notes mail there. It's a pretty simple app, of course, and got me to thinking: Why am I wasting all that space with a left navigator? I use it maybe once a year to go to "all documents" or Sent to look for something. I don't put anything in folders, either. So, I made the navigator smaller, did a "Preview on the side" and narrowed the view so it was "just right". The result. Future of Workplace Communication with Alistair Rennie

Alistair Rennie participated in a panel discussion this week in Australia. This was a very interesting discussion that I highly recommend. It hits on many of the essential questions we grapple with today. "Email is dead, but can anything take its place?" And thus opens the discussion.
