Don't Assume...Your UI Should Help Guide, Not Hinder
Tue, Mar 2nd 2010 9:12p   Chris Blatnick
Today I was working with an internal system. I was filling out a web-based form and got to a required field in which I could not enter any data. It was rather annoying and at the time I couldn't figure out what the problem was. I knew I was probably working on one too many things at once, so I left it to come back and try to figure it out later. Sure enough I did, but even on second glance it wasn't obvious. The sad thing was, I had filled out this form once before and had the same problem, but [read] Keywords: application blogger interface properties

Just a quick public service message for you Facebook users out there. Most people have received the new user interface by now. I only just received it myself, so I haven't lived with it long enough to render judgment. However, one of the things I noticed right away (besides the fact that they broke the Blackberry app for a few days...grrrr) was that I was not seeing all of my friends' status updates. So, after remembering what they did last time, I checked and indeed they throttled back the numb [read] Keywords: blackberry blogger facebook interface

Folder Name Issue Causing Java UI Rendering Problem In Notes 8 Mail File
Wed, Jan 27th 2010 11:07a   Chris Blatnick
I was working with one of my customers and was told about an interesting problem. They are currently in the process of upgrading to Notes 8.5.1 and so far, most of the client upgrades have been nice and smooth. One user had an unusual issue that was causing a bit of angst. After being upgraded and getting the new mail template, most of his folders were not visible in the UI. Here's what it looked like. Changes Ahead For Interface Matters
Fri, Dec 18th 2009 8:48a   Chris Blatnick
The winds of change are blowing here at Interface Matters and in my opinion are way, way overdue. The only excuse I have is lack of time to devote to these changes (or at least lack of desire to devote the time since other things have been occupying my attention of late). I have been wanting to make some changes here for quite some time, and as the new year rolls around, it's probably as good a time as any to make the leap. First, I want Interface Matters to expand beyond a single voice. This h [read] Keywords: domino lotus notes notes client template xpages blogger community development interface

On Productivity: My Paper Processing Workflow
Thu, Dec 17th 2009 10:55a   Chris Blatnick
I've always been a fan of performing tasks as efficiently as possible and eliminating the drudgery of those tasks that don't add a lot of value to my work or personal life. One of those tasks which is a necessary evil is the maintenance of paper-based documents. Everyone has them...bills that need to be paid, bank statements, tax documents, owner's manuals, receipts. As much as possible, many of us have tried to digitize these things so we don't receive them as paper in the first place. If you've been following along with the home game, then you are aware that there are many excellent UI patterns that you can use to improve the user experience you deliver to your users in your applications.  Today, I wanted to explore another simple yet powerful pattern: "Forgiving Formats".  This pattern is perfect for those applications in which speed to data entry is key (or at least desirable in most circumstances).  I know in many of the business applications I have encountered over the [read] Keywords: document forms lotusscript notes application applications blogger database google interface workspace

Sweet Drag and Drop Actions In the Lotus Notes Client
Wed, Nov 18th 2009 3:17p   Chris Blatnick
I've mentioned once or twice before that I really like using drag and drop. Although it is often a bit slower than other actions and you sometimes have to show the user how to do it, I find it to be a preferred method for executing certain tasks in an application. Lotus Notes itself offers many cool and useful drag and drop actions. I've been showing end users some of these for a long time, and always there are folks that had no clue drag and drop actions were even available. It's an exciting day to be sure, as the Lotus Knows campaign officially kicks off here in the United States. It's been a long time since Lotus has had a highly visible nationwide campaign and it's awesome to be on the inside now to see it begin to take off. Add Document Ratings To Your Notes Client Designs
Fri, Jul 31st 2009 4:28p   Chris Blatnick
Way back when I was actively developing stuff on a daily basis, I wrote about a quickly cobbled together idea I had to include a document rating system in a Notes client application (might want to read that first). Document Rating is a familiar "Web 2.0" design pattern that can actually be quite useful. Document ratings allow users to democratically decide on good content and by using this technique the best stuff will bubble up to the top (at least theoretically). As I was once again forced to use one of the most horrible software products I have ever laid eyes on, it occurred to me that it's worth repeating one of my favorite mantras, even at the risk of sounding like a broken record (do any of you kids even know what that means? ;-) --> Simplicity in your design is your goal. If you can get to the point where the interface "disappears" and the user can just get in the flow and do their work, then you've really got something there. Cheap UI Trick: Add Whitespace With Borders
Wed, Mar 25th 2009 1:44p   Chris Blatnick
When I'm building a new UI or composing a document to send to an audience, I like simple elements that make a big difference in the final presentation. I thought I'd share a trick that I use to add whitespace to designs when using graphics with wrapping text in Lotus Notes. If you've not tried it before, first let me point out that you can paste or import an image into a Notes form/document and set the properties of the image so that text can wrap left or right. Error messages...the bane of users. We all dread the software crash or programmatic wrong turn that sends our productivity crashing into a brick wall. To add insult to injury, I think most of us would be hard pressed to find examples of good error messages in the software we use. On Total (e)Productivity In Lotus Notes
Wed, Sep 3rd 2008 7:59p   Chris Blatnick
I've mentioned the eProductivity system a few times here and there and wanted to share some additional thoughts about it. It's great to see applications that enhance and extend the power of the Lotus Notes platform. Eric Mack and his development team have done a great job in this respect. (Don't forget to check out the video demo) If you are a practitioner of Getting Things Done (GTD), David Allen's system for managing the overwhelm almost all of us feel due to the myriad things that require o [read] Keywords: lotus notes template application applications development integration interface php

Domino Web Developers...Will Our Apps Be Better In New Google Browser?
Mon, Sep 1st 2008 10:00p   Chris Blatnick
Exciting times, eh? Tomorrow, Google is releasing "Google Chrome", a new, built-from-the-ground-up web browser that promises to be a modern platform for applications and web pages. With announcements like this, plus all the new goodies like xPages coming from IBM, you really do need to start brushing up on your web skills. While I *love* rich client development, I believe it's equally important to be able to use your skills when developing for the browser. OK Lotus Geeks, Time To Pump Up!
Mon, Sep 1st 2008 7:59p   Chris Blatnick
Hey Everybody...Are you ready for a challenge? I came across the OneHundredPushUps site a few weeks back and put it on my list of things to explore in more detail. I finally did this weekend, so I'm ready to get started. The gist of the program is that you do the required work for six weeks with the goal of being able to do 100 pushups (consecutively) at the end. Twitter...Are We Doing It Wrong?

I should be spending a little more time preparing for the social software proof of technology seminar that I am giving the next two days, but instead I'm spending time reading blogs about social software. Hmmm...maybe that actually counts. :-) There's been quite a bit of buzz about Twitter in our community lately. Rocky asked what all the fuss was about a few days ago. By now, if you are a member of the Lotus community in any way, shape or form, you've probably seen the great new press release that articulates the momentum we've been gaining (quarter after quarter) over our competitors. It's so great to see the commitment we've all made to this platform be validated in real world terms. The Importance Of Micro-Experiences
Mon, Jul 28th 2008 9:08p   Chris Blatnick
Do you think about the simple bits that make using your application, website, etc., easier for end users? With the continuing specialization of certain applications, both within the firewall and out, I find that users are frequently interacting with these applications for very small chunks of time. Usually it is in the context of looking up some item of data, and it made me reflect on the ways I've tried to simplify life for end users, especially in light of short transactions. Once again, Nathan Freeman has provided us with a thought-provoking article that I think is a must read for every Notes developer. In this post, Nathan continues his "The Truth As I See It" series (also check out Part 1). Nathan and I had a quick Sametime chat on how his ideas relate to the user interface. One last post about mind maps and we'll move on, I promise! :-) It's no secret that I am a big fan of visual mapping techniques. Mind maps allow you to capture, quantify and organize information in ways that mirror how our brains actually work. That is, you have to (virtually) leave the place you are currently working in order to go to the "place to collaborate". Everywhere you look, so called "normals" are getting into technology, especially the latest gadgets and gizmos, home theater gear and video games. SnTT: Canceling an Embedded Editor Transaction
Thu, Jan 10th 2008 9:55p   Chris Blatnick
If you use embedded editors in your design, you may have run across this issue. In any case, the number of passes really doesn't matter. What does matter is the fact that a lot of you didn't even see the gorilla walk through the video while you were intent on your task of counting passes of the basketball. (If at this point you are saying, "What Gorilla???!!!", go ahead and watch the vi [read] Keywords: lotusphere , notes , applications , interface

A Cool Experiment
Mon, Jan 7th 2008 3:07p   Chris Blatnick
Hi Folks...this is related to the user experience, so bear with me. Check out the following video and while watching make sure you count the number of times that the white team (wearing the white shirts) passes the basketball. This is important, so make sure you count every change of hands. When finished, come back here and record your answer in the comments. View the video here...Remember: Count the number of times the white team passes the ball Don't look at the comments until you've watche [read] Keywords:
