A Microsoft Windows Home Server shortcoming
Carl Tyler

As I blogged in the past, I've been really pleased with my Windows Home Server (WHS), I use it for so many things, it backs up all my machines, it runs a Domino Server that replicates key databases from other servers, it runs uTorrent, it's my media server, it's my iPad music server, you get the idea, this little box not much bigger than a Bible does a lot of things.  Recently it has been having issues though, the system drive had started to return errors writing to disk C, constantly logging bad sector failures etc. Now if this was a data disk that wouldn't be so bad as I could just remove it and replace it, but the C drive is the WHS system disk.

Now you can replace the system disk with a new one, and Microsoft provides a WHS system recovery disk, which basically creates a fresh install on a new system disk, whilst still keeping all the data nice and safe on those disks, but here's the problem, see I installed all those other apps on the WHS box, Domino, uTorrent, various WHS plugins etc.  Well if I just put in a new disk and run the system recovery I need to install and configure all those applications again, which would be a major pain in the arse.  There's been lots written on this on the web, with lots of amazement that Microsoft missed something so basic.  You may think you can just use something like disk cloning software and be all set, but it isn't quite that simple, various registry settings reference offsets, disk unique IDs and device names etc. that make it a little more complicated.  Fortunately the web comes to the rescue again, and someone has posted complete steps on how you can clone the WHS System Drive which can be found here How to successfully clone and upgrade a WHS system drive.  So using a couple of SATA USB adapters, I successfully followed these instructions and now have a new system disk in the WHS, twice the size, and my Domino server and all the apps are happily running.

Hopefully, the new version of WHS that is planned by Microsoft will address this.

Is IBM going to dump the old Notes.net forums?
Fri, Feb 10th 2012 7:10a   Carl Tyler
I heard it a few times at Lotusphere from different development groups, "ask your questions on stackoverflow" I've not really heard any reason given for this to be the new location of where to ask questions. But it does make me wonder, are the Notes.net forums going to get booted and replaced by stackoverflow? If they do, I hope it works better than the move to wikis from redbook type documentation. I suppose hosting notes.net costs IBM money, stackoverflow wouldn't. [read] Keywords: ibm lotusphere notes development

The IBM sametime proxy example 7, embeded chat option not working for you?
Thu, Feb 2nd 2012 9:20a   Carl Tyler
So this is a pretty simple issue to see, and a simple issue to resolve, but you could easily take hours trying to figure it out. The IBM Sametime Proxy SDK ships with an example for embedding a Sametime chat window in a web page (Example 7), many of you (me included) may try this and find that indeed the chat is embedded, but as soon as the other user responds, it opens up a new chat window. Anyway, the solution is simple, use the Canonical name for the user in the HTML. This video expl [read] Keywords: ibm sametime

I forgot to post this whilst I was at Lotusphere The View published a new article I wrote on the Sametime 8.5.x proxy. It's an introduction article that can get you started with development. Discover the Sametime 8.5.x Proxy server and its new client for browsers and iPhone. Learn what the Proxy server does, how it works, and the ways that you can add Sametime presence to Web sites using the powerful APIs exposed in the server’s Browser Client toolkit. Rather foolishly or rather smartly, I have not yet decided, late last year I agreed to take part in the 2012 Big Bloggers Dander for Dosh (not sure it was called big last year, perhaps they added that for me?), anyway, I signed up and I will be taking part in the week prior to UKLUG Why should this concern you? Well during the year I'm going to be trying to hit you up for sponsor money, all those people that I've ever helped free of charge with a Sametime question, it's going to [read] Keywords: sametime facebook

Lotusphere 2012 - How I see things
Tue, Jan 24th 2012 1:46p   Carl Tyler
Overall the feedback I have been hearing from people around Lotusphere 2012 has been very positive, they liked the OGS and felt very positive afterwards. What I personally took from the OGS was this, having no panels will score you big points with the attendees, saying Notes or Domino will get you the largest cheers in the OGS. Mike Rhodin's speech basically bored me to tears, it's the same sentences as his section at every other Lotusphere, just in a slightly different order, if you [read] Keywords: connections domino ibm lotus lotusphere notes notes client sametime symphony xpages email outlook server sharepoint

Yes I will be going to the ball. Ooops, I mean Lotusphere. I still have room on my dance card however, so if you'd like to meet to discuss Unified Comms solutions or opportunities ie opportunities for my company to work with you, or maybe you just want a free general advice chit chat, shoot me an email at ctylerls@epilio.com and we ca [read] Keywords: ibm lotus lotusphere sametime blogger development email laptop unified communications

What's old is new again - or as IBM likes to call it Sametime 8.5.2 IFR1
Tue, Nov 22nd 2011 7:28a   Carl Tyler
Great news, IBM today released IBM Sametime 8.5.2 IFR1, seriously what are they thinking with the name? I mean for one thing, this is the first release of Sametime now officially supported on Domino 8.5.3, and didn't IBM say they were going to sync release versions so it would be less confusing for customers (yeah I know, they did that for one release, then forgot they ever said it). Seriously though, people hear Interim Fix and they think bug fixes, they don't think a release with som [read] Keywords: domino ibm sametime apple bug desktop google iphone mobile network server skype websphere
