New component tooling in the Composite Application Editor
Mon, Dec 1st 2008 8:49a   Bob Balfe
We showed this to business partners last month and we are about to deliver the new tooling in a post Notes 8.5 web delivery in time for Lotusphere. So you will be able to do most of this stuff at Lotusphere. The goal is to get these new component containers into the Notes 8.5.1 release. I demonstrate creating a new composite application where I configure the components (properties and actions) right from within the composite application editor. Cool controls for Lotus Notes - Part 2
Wed, Nov 19th 2008 8:59a   Bob Balfe
John Foldager took the time to look at the controls I posted about back in September and has some great input: I have looked at some of the controls and they seem to require some "clean up" in the code as well as their behaviour. An example is the GanttChart component which has some methods that are misspelled (minor refactor would fix this) and the scrollbars doesn't work perfectly according to your scrolling in the view. I personally don't think that these components should be pac [read] Keywords: lotus notes notes client php

Mac, XBox and USB 2 Drives
Mon, Nov 17th 2008 9:59a   Bob Balfe
I found this kind of funny. I wanted to use a new terabyte drive I bought and connect it to my XBox. This would allow me to have all of my family pictures, videos, and music connected directly to the xbox - which is great for parties. Here is the problem. The XBox only recognizes FAT32 drives. The drive came as NTFS formatted. Windows 2000 and Windows XP can not format drives as FAT32 - nice huh! So I connected the drive up to my friends Mac laptop and viola... it formatted the drive to FAT32. [read] Keywords: laptop mac php wiki

Three new Composite Application Wiki articles posted
Fri, Nov 7th 2008 2:59p   Bob Balfe
The three articles below have been posted to the Composite Application Wiki. Each one is a good introduction summary to the new capabilities in the composite space. For the web container we actually had some additional tooling that did not make it in the first release. We are pretty excited to show this tooling at Lotusphere. Basically, creating components from web browser applications will literally be point and click - and that also includes Spreadsheet, HOD, and Notes Views. Property Value Editor
Fri, Nov 7th 2008 2:49p   Bob Balfe
The Composite Application Editor team was very busy in the Notes 8.5 release. One of the highly requested features made it into the tooling. This new feature is the Property Value Editor. The dialog can be accessed from the Composite Application Editor menu under Edit | Property Value Editor. The dialog is very powerful. Stealing images!
Thu, Nov 6th 2008 1:19p   Bob Balfe
One of my directories did not have the appropriate entries in the .htaccess file to prevent people from stealing my images. What I mean by steal is, they are actually stealing my bandwidth by referring to an image from my site on their site. So what I get are more bytes transferred and a lot more referrers. Composite applications and Widget Actions/Live Text integration
Mon, Nov 3rd 2008 3:20p   Bob Balfe
I am looking for feedback on a prototype demonstration I put together. The demo shows how you can map widget actions based on Live Text content types to composite applications. You create the action from the visible composite application page. Once you select the recognizable content types you can then select what compatible actions should be called once the application is opened. The content type contents are then sent to all of the selected actions. Advanced application container features - wiki article

Erik just posted a new wiki article about some advanced component properties of the new containers shipping in Notes 8.5. If you are familiar with the container framework you can see how multiple values can be sent from a container. One of the other powerful features is the Eclipse preference service for values. This allows you to deploy components with different configurations based on preferences - ie. deploying from a test environment to a production environment for instance. In an area where data and statistics is a key differentiation between the winners and losers, tools that aggregate and visualize that data are worth their weight in gold. One of the things we have in the new Web Application Container in Notes 8.5 is xpath support. I think people should start getting familiar with it (if they aren't already). This makes web application integration with other kinds of components very powerful. You can now define output properties for just about any text on the screen. Check out this tutorial Brett D. Theo's rant on RAD and Notes
Mon, Jun 9th 2008 9:55a   Bob Balfe
I try to read almost every post on PlanetLotus but lately it has gotten hard to get to all of them. So I now rely on the title of the post and the tool-tip to see if it is something worth my time. I also look at the number of eyes that have clicked the link. Anyway, Theo has a pretty good posting and I don't think many will disagree with him. One comment he made: I have nothing against composite apps, mind you, but you should use them when needed, not because its the 'new' way of [read] Keywords: composite designer expeditor lotus notes applications integration java php planetlotus planetlotus.org

How I created the Excel component
Fri, Jun 6th 2008 3:53p   Bob Balfe
Ok, let me preface by stating this Excel container did not ship in the Notes 8.5 beta. If you seriously want it in the end product please let me know because I think it is slated as a web delivery for the moment. This is a very basic demo and it still uses the POC landmark editing UI, however I think you will get the point in the end. It shows you how you can define properties and map those properties to cells and cell ranges in a spreadsheet. Once again, no programming! Writing Eclipse plugins for Notes 8.5 and XPD 6.2
Thu, Jun 5th 2008 2:31p   Bob Balfe
As Mikkel has already experienced, you need to using Eclipse 3.4 when developing java plugins for Notes 8.5 or XPD 6.2. We skipped over Eclipse 3.3 for various reasons. Another small change is the remote debug options. I often write code, deploy it to the runtime through an update site (once) then copy the plugins over from then on. This way I can remote debug my Java plugins using the following command: C: otes\framework cp cplauncher.exe -config notes -debug -clean -console -vmargs -Xdbg:tra [read] Keywords: composite expeditor ibm lotus notes applications eclipse java php server workspace

Notes view container proof of concept
Wed, Jun 4th 2008 11:26a   Bob Balfe
This video was something I put together to show a prototype of a notes view container using the back-end Java classes. The container is based on the new container work going into Notes 8.5 and Expeditor 6.2. The amount of code to write the container was surprisingly small since I just inherited the Notes view parts. This also means anyone could have created this container using public API's. In this demo, I show how you can use Formula language for the landmark identifier (more on that ter [read] Keywords: expeditor formula formula language lotus notes database java php

American Idol does it again
Thu, May 22nd 2008 11:04p   Bob Balfe
I happen to be watching American Idol live last night - which is very rare with my DVR. Thank God I did, they once again waited until 10:02 to announce the winner. My wife said so many people were pissed at work today because they recorded it and missed the announcement because the DVR was set to end at 10pm. I think this whole concept is classic and kudos to the producers. Of course I hate it though. :-) [read] Keywords: php

cai URL under the covers
Tue, May 6th 2008 4:25p   Bob Balfe
Mikkel wrote about the CAI url posting Niklas put on the Composite Application wiki. These are all good comments about the format of the URL so I am not going to address the ugliness - I will just say there is a method to the madness. What I can show you is, you can actually create the URL in code fairly easy (if you are on the Java side of the house of course). Since the page id is the perspective identifier you can use the Eclipse Workbench API's to get that. Ok, if you have not seen the movie go see it. It was great! It had the usual non-believable super hero stuff but your kids and the kid in you will love the movie. And yes, there is a sneak peak at what's to come after the credits are complete. However, the movie was so long I had to go to the bathroom right after. I went to the bathroom when the credits started and got back in time to see the clip - btw, the credits are also amazingly long. SWT/JFace In Action
Fri, Apr 25th 2008 1:05p   Bob Balfe
More and more Notes developers are diving into the Eclipse site of the equation. One of the books I used as a good primer was the SWT/JFace In Action book from Manning publishing. The book is a great resource for learning about SWT programming and architecture. The one I had was for Eclipse 3.0 and a lot of it is still relevant but much has also been added in the last few releases. [read] Keywords: javascript lotus notes eclipse php

Adding custom launch items to the "Open" menu
Wed, Apr 16th 2008 1:24p   Bob Balfe
Lotus Notes has a very cool UI where you can contribute launcher items to the Open menu. You can not only contribute bookmarks and databases but you can create a custom handler to have just about anything launch from the Open menu. You can check out the Info Center help here where it shows you how to add a contribution to the menu. The one area the help does not go into is the handler implementation (TestURILauncherItemHandler()). Creating extensions dynamically
Tue, Apr 15th 2008 2:02p   Bob Balfe
I have been asked a few times how we create perspectives dynamically in Lotus Expeditor and Notes in the composite application space. We actually create many extensions dynamically using the Eclipse RegistryFactory API. The getRegistry() method returns an instance of the extension registry factory (IExtensionRegistry) where you can call addContribution(). Once this method is called the extension becomes available for use - usually reflected in a toolbar, menu, etc. What would this kind of stuff [read] Keywords: composite expeditor ibm lotus notes symphony application applications database eclipse java php profile wiki xml

Ok, my kids loved lincoln logs and Legos - and actually still use them a lot - mostly legos. Now, my kids (even my five year old), only want to create maps in Halo 3. They are creating some amazing maps and doing all sorts of things with the map building tool. Lotus Expeditor Samples with code
Tue, Apr 8th 2008 10:12a   Bob Balfe
Many may not be aware that Lotus Notes 8 has most of the Lotus Expeditor platform underneath it. This means you have a wide range of new architectural and programmability options in the client. There is a page in the Expeditor Info Center that lists the range of samples (with code) that can be referenced. The link I reference is the one for installing the sample into base Eclipse. New export function in RAD 7.5 rocks
Fri, Apr 4th 2008 2:55p   Bob Balfe
Ok, I am not sure if this came from Eclipse 3.4 or this is something Rational added but I absolutely love it! Now, I don't have to change all of the manifests to provide patches or export my plugins to a configured runtime. This is going to save so much time and get rid of a big headache. What the feature does is automatically replace ".qualifier" with what you specify in the field to the right. I matched it to my Notes 8.5 install for the property broker plugin. Very cool. Faster loading plugins with deferred service instantiation
Thu, Apr 3rd 2008 2:49p   Bob Balfe
One of the things developers do in the bundle start() method is register services (OSGI services that is). One best practice to follow is to not instantiate the underlying object until the service is requested. In your start bundle you may have something like this the first listing below. The problem with service registration is the object you pass in has to be instantiated. public void start(BundleContext context) throws Exception { mySvc = context.registerService( MyOwnOSGIService.class. One thing I should have done long ago was better categorize my blog entries. A first step in better categorization is the introduction of the "Help" category. The new help category now contains any postings where I am attempting to share information that you may not get on another site or from a book about Lotus/Expeditor/Eclipse products. I also added a Lotus category where I can now isolate my Lotus/IBM posts from other general software and computer posts. .NET, Adobe Flex, and other components in Composite Applications
Tue, Mar 25th 2008 12:26p   Bob Balfe
I want to ask if you think having out of the box support for easier ways to have other technologies integrated with composite applications. You see "composite" technology all over the place but I think the Lotus composite story is far beyond the other technologies out there because of one simple concept - declarative communication between heterogeneous technologies. Meaning applications and components from different technologies can be wired together with no coding. So my question is, should Lo [read] Keywords: composite , expeditor , lotus , notes , applications , email , integration

Horton, Cavemen, and John Adams
Mon, Mar 17th 2008 5:23p   Bob Balfe
It kind of felt like an all movie weekend! We saw Horton Hears a Who on Saturday - I really liked it, the kids loved it. Then I saw 10,000 BC with my son Sunday night - he really liked it, I thought it was ok. It was a lot different from what I thought it was going to be like. Then, I watched two of the three segments of John Adams - EXCELLENT series, can't wait to finish it. Here I think work and life are sometimes hard - imagine living then?
