For those lost in the Storm frenzy
Sun, Nov 30th 2008 8:45p   Andy Donaldson
For those who have been sitting on the fence about purchasing Verizon's BlackBerry Storm, I have a word of advice for you. Hold out a little longer. My Storm arrived last Monday and after a day, I posted my thoughts on if it was worth the time or not. Well, after a week I'm still not sure whether or not I should send it back Tuesday when I return to the office or hold out for another week. The biggest beef I've had with it since my last post was battery life. Boy does it stink! After Twittering [read] Keywords: blackberry iphone ipod leak office planetlotus planetlotus.org

My first day in the Storm..BlackBerry that is
Mon, Nov 24th 2008 7:36p   Andy Donaldson
Well, it showed up in the mail room today, just as Verizon promised me last week. I was fortunate enough to get approval from the higher ups to go ahead and order the BlackBerry Storm so that it would ship first thing Friday morning. Side note: Here's something that doesn't make sense to me. Why can Amazon ship the latest Harry Potter book a day or so early so it shows up on the release date, but Verizon has to wait until the release date to ship the device? And to top it off, the release date i [read] Keywords: blackberry google interface iphone ipod password

Regular or Extra-Crispy: Which version of Notes to roll out?
Mon, Nov 10th 2008 7:11p   Andy Donaldson
In the beginning, The Colonel created Original Recipe Kentucky Fried Chicken, and it was good. Then as tastes and time marched on, the big wigs that bought his company from him created Extra-Crispy Kentucky Fried Chicken and the masses were pleased. It seems Lotus has followed that same kind of flow. The “original recipe” Lotus Notes client with its happy little workspace and all its icons hasn't changed all that much over the years. President-elect Barack Obama has made available on Flickr exclusive behind the scenes pictures of himself and his family awaiting the results of the election. Here's an interesting scenario. As I've blogged about recently, I have to create a large number of email accounts as a result of a recent acquisition my company has made. Per my normal standards for user creation, I've create policies for these new locations and am using registration documents in them as well. Sametime variables and InstallShield Tuner
Fri, Oct 24th 2008 2:19p   Andy Donaldson
For a while now one of the most popular blog entries that I have has been the ones regarding using InstallShield Tuner for Lotus Notes. ISTfLN can be used to generate a custom silent install that can be used with either Smart Upgrade, SMS or other manual process to push out and install the Lotus Notes client to your users. While in the past the product has been a real time saver for client installs, I'm finding now that some of the settings I've come to rely upon for Sametime no longer work. I know in the past I've mentioned on my blog that my wife, friends and myself like to delve into the unknown and go ghost hunting. Yes, I know to a lot of people that seems strange, but it is also a lot of fun to do. So yesterday after I heard that our friends were coming over to play cards, I had the idea to make a podcast of what I knew were going to be the likely conversation of the evening. Living in the "hill country" of east central Ohio as I have for the past 10 or so years, I have found a lot of humor in Jeff Foxworthy's "You might be a redneck" routines. SnTT - xACL - Secure that Domino Directory!
Thu, Aug 7th 2008 2:03p   Andy Donaldson
Domino Directory security is one of those things that I just have always taken for granted I guess. Did the "Actions -> Upgrade to More Secure Internet Password Format" option. Set the ACL entry of Anonymous to "No Access". Set the default so users can edit their own password information and everything else that should be hidden from prying eyes, is, right? Wrong! And as I had found out on a recent security audit, not everything is hidden from prying eyes. The latest in hacking technology!

This graphic reminds me way too much of the one that was in Bloom County many years ago. Anyways, it seems that some kids at MIT with far too much time on their hands and no girlfriends to distract them, have created the latest in wardriving technology. But, as our beloved founder has graced upon me, the defacto, (since I was the first to contact him) Grand Wizard GONAD for the USA. That's right kids. I am the biggest GONAD in the US of A. I will rule with an iron fist, but it will be benevolent and just. ND8 Upgrade Step 2.5.1 - Validate the schedule!
Fri, Aug 1st 2008 2:17p   Andy Donaldson
Had an interesting issue pop up today with a user that I had upgraded to Notes 8. After moving her to the 8.0.1 server and upgraded her mail file, she was getting the following error basically doing anything in her calendar: "Double Book:An error occurred while searching for free time. We were not able to perform conflict checking for you at this time. The meeting will be created and placed on your calendar. Continue?" News breaking today...well, rumor at least, that the BlackBerry Thunder is scheduled to be released on October 8th! The migraine that is email archiving – input needed
Wed, Jul 30th 2008 11:26a   Andy Donaldson
I’m pretty sure that my company is very much like any other companies with out of control email inbox sizes and politics getting in the way of putting the hammer down on restrictions in size of mail files. I’ve been tasked with being involved with email archiving here at the ranch and to be honest with you, it is not a task that I am looking forward to implementing. Normally I am not this blunt on my blog about things. But this guy has got me really on the chip today. Like others in the entertainment industry who believe that they are so called "experts" on everything from politics to how you should live your life, this jackass came out on his radio show and said this about people diagnosed Autism: “a fraud, a racket … In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. … They don’t have a father around to tell them, [read] Keywords:

But I'm happy to say that I'm back in the lovely air conditioned hotel waiting on dinner. Don't really feel like doing the restaurant thing tonight, too stinky after my afternoon. [read] Keywords:

BGR gives Thunder a FAIL

The "Boy Genius Report" site today came out with some new information regarding BlackBerry Thunder. You can read all about it here, but from what it sounds like, it doesn't look good for the device any time soon. I really hope BlackBerry is able to pull it together quickly. I'm beginning to think that RIM is putting out devices too fast as of late without fully testing them like they had done on the earlier, more reliable models.
