For those lost in the Storm frenzy
Sun, Nov 30th 2008 8:45p Andy Donaldson For those who have been sitting on the fence about purchasing Verizon's BlackBerry Storm, I have a word of advice for you. Hold out a little longer. My Storm arrived last Monday and after a day, I posted my thoughts on if it was worth the time or not. Well, after a week I'm still not sure whether or not I should send it back Tuesday when I return to the office or hold out for another week. The biggest beef I've had with it since my last post was battery life. Boy does it stink! After Twittering [read] Keywords: blackberry

My first day in the Storm..BlackBerry that is
Mon, Nov 24th 2008 7:36p Andy Donaldson Well, it showed up in the mail room today, just as Verizon promised me last week. I was fortunate enough to get approval from the higher ups to go ahead and order the BlackBerry Storm so that it would ship first thing Friday morning. Side note: Here's something that doesn't make sense to me. Why can Amazon ship the latest Harry Potter book a day or so early so it shows up on the release date, but Verizon has to wait until the release date to ship the device? And to top it off, the release date i [read] Keywords: blackberry

Regular or Extra-Crispy: Which version of Notes to roll out?
Mon, Nov 10th 2008 7:11p Andy Donaldson In the beginning, The Colonel created Original Recipe Kentucky Fried Chicken, and it was good. Then as tastes and time marched on, the big wigs that bought his company from him created Extra-Crispy Kentucky Fried Chicken and the masses were pleased. It seems Lotus has followed that same kind of flow. The “original recipe” Lotus Notes client with its happy little workspace and all its icons hasn't changed all that much over the years. Behind the scenes on election night
Fri, Nov 7th 2008 9:56p Andy Donaldson 20081104_Chicago_IL_ElectionNight1258 Originally uploaded by Barack ObamaI heard about this on the news tonight. President-elect Barack Obama has made available on Flickr exclusive behind the scenes pictures of himself and his family awaiting the results of the election. Whether or not your like or voted for him, there are some awesome pictures. One of the reasons I like these photos so much is that they are raw images of a man awaiting his role in history, as he knows it. See the full set here. [read] Keywords: |

AdminP and mail file creation oddity
Thu, Oct 30th 2008 10:49a Andy Donaldson Here's an interesting scenario. As I've blogged about recently, I have to create a large number of email accounts as a result of a recent acquisition my company has made. Per my normal standards for user creation, I've create policies for these new locations and am using registration documents in them as well. Sametime variables and InstallShield Tuner
Fri, Oct 24th 2008 2:19p Andy Donaldson For a while now one of the most popular blog entries that I have has been the ones regarding using InstallShield Tuner for Lotus Notes. ISTfLN can be used to generate a custom silent install that can be used with either Smart Upgrade, SMS or other manual process to push out and install the Lotus Notes client to your users. While in the past the product has been a real time saver for client installs, I'm finding now that some of the settings I've come to rely upon for Sametime no longer work. Whe [read] Keywords: domino

It's no Taking Notes podcast....
Sun, Oct 12th 2008 6:49p Andy Donaldson I know in the past I've mentioned on my blog that my wife, friends and myself like to delve into the unknown and go ghost hunting. Yes, I know to a lot of people that seems strange, but it is also a lot of fun to do. So yesterday after I heard that our friends were coming over to play cards, I had the idea to make a podcast of what I knew were going to be the likely conversation of the evening. Seriously, if you are ever around New Philadelphia, Ohio sometime, stop into the local Wal Mart and you will see what I mean. I'm not hating on the good people that shop there, we do often because we can get more for our money there, but you'll see what I mean. Tue, Sep 23rd 2008 7:55p Andy Donaldson When 8.0.2 launched a few weeks ago, I like many others in the Lotus community were real excited about it after hearing of all the performance enhancements that were promised in the release. A BES 4.1.6 Upgrade Gotchas
Sun, Sep 14th 2008 12:59p Andy Donaldson For some reason, upgrading the BlackBerry server freaks me out more then does upgrading a Domino server. Not sure why. Sun, Aug 3rd 2008 6:02p Andy Donaldson But, as our beloved founder has graced upon me, the defacto, (since I was the first to contact him) Grand Wizard GONAD for the USA. That's right kids. I am the biggest GONAD in the US of A. I will rule with an iron fist, but it will be benevolent and just. As we will likely be making fun of others, namely Exchange admins and SharePoint freaks, I demand nothing less then witty and cutting remarks towards them. If you are not yet a GONAD, what it the matter with you? All you need do is contact Bro [read] Keywords: blogger

Fri, Aug 1st 2008 11:06p Andy Donaldson First, Gregg. Then Bob. With the first day of August slowly coming to an end, the Lotusphere banter and excitement is beginning! Over the past couple of years, mid-August has been the time frame when registration has opened for our Lotus-lovefest. Will this year be different? The official Lotusphere website states: Lotusphere 2009 will take place from Sunday, January 18 thru Thursday, January 22, 2009 at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort and Disney's Yacht and Beach Club Resort in Or [read] Keywords: ibm

ND8 Upgrade Step 2.5.1 - Validate the schedule!
Fri, Aug 1st 2008 2:17p Andy Donaldson Had an interesting issue pop up today with a user that I had upgraded to Notes 8. After moving her to the 8.0.1 server and upgraded her mail file, she was getting the following error basically doing anything in her calendar: "Double Book:An error occurred while searching for free time. We were not able to perform conflict checking for you at this time. The meeting will be created and placed on your calendar. Continue?" Doing a quick search on the Lotus support site returned information on an old [read] Keywords: calendaring

Photography FAIL
Wed, Jul 30th 2008 9:46p Andy Donaldson What happens when you ask your teenage son to take a picture of you and your wife? (Click to enlarge) You find out afterwards that he didn't care at all about framing the picture to include his parents. No, he just wanted to make sure that he got the cute blonde waitress in the picture. That's my boy. [read] Keywords: blogger

Distant Thunder?
Wed, Jul 30th 2008 7:44p Andy Donaldson News breaking today...well, rumor at least, that the BlackBerry Thunder is scheduled to be released on October 8th! The rumor included that it will include a 3.2 megapixel camera, micro SD slot and music downloads via Rhapsody. Lord knows that Verizon can't wait to start pushing this on everyone as a hopeful iPhone killer. Only time will tell. Read all about it here. [read] Keywords: blackberry

The migraine that is email archiving – input needed
Wed, Jul 30th 2008 11:26a Andy Donaldson I’m pretty sure that my company is very much like any other companies with out of control email inbox sizes and politics getting in the way of putting the hammer down on restrictions in size of mail files. I’ve been tasked with being involved with email archiving here at the ranch and to be honest with you, it is not a task that I am looking forward to implementing. Being a single Domino Administrator and having another level of complexity put on top of my other daily chores, (like rolling o [read] Keywords: document

Michael Savage is a piece of shit!
Tue, Jul 22nd 2008 8:17p Andy Donaldson Normally I am not this blunt on my blog about things. But this guy has got me really on the chip today. Like others in the entertainment industry who believe that they are so called "experts" on everything from politics to how you should live your life, this jackass came out on his radio show and said this about people diagnosed Autism: “a fraud, a racket … In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. … They don’t have a father around to tell them, [read] Keywords: |

Mr. Macian goes to DC
Mon, Jul 21st 2008 5:47p Andy Donaldson 101_2999 Originally uploaded by MacianSo I'm in the greater DC area for a couple of days for training and what I do decide to do? Go for a forced march around the nations capitol on a 95+ degree day. Ya, I didn't think that one through too well. Got caught up in the whole, "I got here early, lets be a tourist" thing. But I'm happy to say that I'm back in the lovely air conditioned hotel waiting on dinner. Don't really feel like doing the restaurant thing tonight, too stinky after my afternoon. [read] Keywords: |

A stormy fall?
Wed, Jul 16th 2008 8:06p Andy Donaldson Once again, the Boy Genius Report website is first with big news regarding the iPhone-esq offering from BlackBerry code named Thunder. They are reporting that there will be a HUGE marketing push in September followed by a mid-October release on Verizon. Hopefully that timetable holds and hopefully they fix some of the problems that had been earlier reported with the device. Only time will tell! Stay tuned! And if you haven't checked out BGR, it's worth adding it to your RSS feeds. [read] Keywords: blackberry

ND8 Upgrade Step 2.5 - Traveler rocks, but Quickr.....
Wed, Jul 16th 2008 7:45p Andy Donaldson Now that I have my admin server up and successfully running on Domino 8.0.1, I felt it was time to start playing with the other "toys" that are available to Domino customers. Namely Lotus Notes Traveler and Quickr Entry 8.0.1. If you haven't heard about Traveler, I highly recommend you taking a look at it if you don't mind Windows Mobile devices. I know, it's no iPhone, but it allows you to wirelessly,(only wireless, there is no add in for cradle based devices), sync your Lotus Notes PIM data to [read] Keywords: admin

ND8 Upgrade Step 2 - Upgrading the first server
Tue, Jul 15th 2008 1:05p Andy Donaldson With the upgrade of the design of the Domino Directory behind me, it was time to take the next big step of upgrading my Admin server to Domino 8.0.1. Upgrading a server is never a task one takes lightly. No matter how many tests you make in a lab environment, there is the chance that something will go wrong. So before beginning my task, a quick backup was made of all the important files, including the updated pubnames.ntf template that was used in the directory design upgrade, I was ready to beg [read] Keywords: admin

The road to freedom runs through Bolivar.
Sun, Jul 13th 2008 1:25p Andy Donaldson If you've been following my blog over the past couple of years, your probably familiar with the fact that I get pretty geeked-out every other year when the Civil War comes to town. Well, now I have something else to get all historically geeked up about. On Saturday, I attended the "Revolution on the Tuscarawas" which was put on by the Brigade of the American Revolution and the Ohio Historical Society. You see, not far from were I live there once stood an early American military outpost. Ft. Laur [read] Keywords: blogger

BGR gives Thunder a FAIL
Wed, Jul 9th 2008 3:04p Andy Donaldson The "Boy Genius Report" site today came out with some new information regarding BlackBerry Thunder. You can read all about it here, but from what it sounds like, it doesn't look good for the device any time soon. I really hope BlackBerry is able to pull it together quickly. I'm beginning to think that RIM is putting out devices too fast as of late without fully testing them like they had done on the earlier, more reliable models. As we have been rolling out more and more BlackBerry's at work, I [read] Keywords: blackberry

Mon, Jul 7th 2008 6:48p Andy Donaldson The fine folks over at BlackBerrySync.com have gotten there hands on some nice shots and new information of the newest touch-screen device soon to enter the iPhone dominated marketplace. The BlackBerry 9500, aka Thunder, is set to hit the marketplace sometime in the future and if everything I've ready about it is true it will give the iPhone a run for the money. Now, I understand why the iPhone is so sexy. I get it. But I still have a REALLY hard time thinking that it has anyplace in a corporate [read] Keywords: bes

Peace on Earth
Sun, Jul 6th 2008 11:30a Andy Donaldson Ladies and Gentlemen of the blogging community, At yesterdays 4th of July party at our friends house, we found a food combination that quite possibly could bring an answer to the nagging problem of finding world peace. A bratwurst sausage sitting atop a bed of the smoky goodness that is homemade pulled pork. Add a finely crafted Budweiser chilled to perfection and there you have it! Bad for you, yes. Any redeem |
