Last Wed, some friends from Lotus and I gathered to "celebrate my latest adventure". (my code for leaving IBM)  It was a wonderful evening, filled with memories and great conversations.  To ensure that I never forget Lotus, the gang presented me with a giant box of Lotus schwag which contained clothing, a killer letter opener, stress balls, puzzles, coffee warmers, mouse pads, a gorgeous Disney wine bottle stopper, and a dozen other items.  I think every part of my life can now have a Lotus logo on it!

I was also presented with a certificate of membership into G.O.N.A.D.  Thank you very much Steve, and everyone else who made that possible.

Click here for the photos that ended up on my camera. I think you'll like a few of the captions. ;-)
I know several people were taking pictures, so if you could please share those with me, I'd appreciate it.  A lot of people who were there are not in the shots I have, so hopefully you captured them.

So thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who worked to put this together.  Especially Mary Beth Raven and Erica Topolski for starting this, everyone that donated to the giant yellow box, and those that traveled into Cambridge on a rainy night to make the event.  I know a lot of people could not attend, but thank you for all the emails, ims, and tweets.

Don't worry, this is not the end, just a new beginning.  The Notes tips will still be coming, and hopefully the track managers for Lotusphere 2009 will accept my "Lotus Notes 8.x Tips and Tricks" presentation!

A Theory of Collaboration and Networks
Mon, Dec 1st 2008 8:49p   Alan Lepofsky
Web Worker Daily has just posted a good article from an interview with my manager, Ross Mayfield. "He spoke about the construction of a social network and how our networks have dense cores (strong ties) surrounded by dynamic peripheries (looser ties)." "Instead of focusing on files as the crux of collaboration, Socialtext focuses on the people who are creating the documents and sending the messages. Yesterday on Twitter/Facebook, I asked people what their one favourite Firefox add-on extension was. I know that is tough, as most people have a long list. What surprised me was the diversity of the answers, and how little overlap there was. My single choice would be Tab Mix Plus. My complete list of favs is: ColorfulTabs, Delicious Bookmarks, DownloadThemAll, Screengrab!, and FEBE. I also have CSSViewer and Firebug installed, but since I don't code that often, I don't use them much. I [read] Keywords: ibm facebook firefox twitter

Now that I am on the outside, working for a vendor that would like to integrate our products with the Lotus portfolio, I have some questions for those of you that have been doing it for a long time. Linking an email and event in Apple OSX
Mon, Oct 20th 2008 11:39p   Alan Lepofsky
In my last post, I showed how easy it is to link an email and calendar event in Lotus Notes using document links. You can do something similar with Apple's mail and calendar application, but I find the feature less mature than it is in Notes. Email messages in mail.app have message IDs (similar to Notes' note IDs) but unfortunately there is no menu command to access the ID and copy it to the clipboard (or even see it). You can however drag the email message to the very small URL field of [read] Keywords: document lotus notes rich text apple application email linking

Link a document to a calendar entry
Mon, Oct 20th 2008 10:39p   Alan Lepofsky
I've always felt that one of the most power things about Lotus Notes was document links. Rather than duplicating data in multiple places, you can keep the data in one place, and then link to it from multiple other places. (email, calendars, Teamrooms, Document Library, custom applications, etc) There is a Notes feature called "Copy Into" that copies the body of an email message into a calendar entry, but at times there is no need to duplicate the data. For example, if you receive an email [read] Keywords: document lotus notes applications database email linking

How much do you know about Notes Full Text Search?
Fri, Aug 22nd 2008 8:09a   Alan Lepofsky
Have you ever noticed the word "More" on your full text search bar? If not, you're missing out on a lot of options! When you click on more, the Search panel expands to offer several advanced features. I bundle these into 4 categories: 1. Sort options: This controls how the results of your search are displayed, and consequently, how actions you take on the results are handled. 2. Options: Controls how matches are determined. 3. Conditions: These buttons allow you to get much mo [read] Keywords: notes

We Won!
Tue, Aug 19th 2008 12:20a   Alan Lepofsky
This past weekend my ultimate frisbee team won our summer league finals. It was awesome! We played 8 games over 2 days. It was an incredible team effort, with everyone on the team giving everything they had. I wonder if my teammates are hurting as much as I am today. Nah, I'm old! While my game is based more on experience and consistency than speed and height, it is still nice to be able to contribute at this high of a level. There are some amazing superstars on my team, and everyone is s [read] Keywords:

Broken business processes contribute to our email overload
Mon, Aug 18th 2008 8:39p   Alan Lepofsky
As anyone who follows the "2.0" space knows, my manager Ross Mayfield is an amazing speaker. One of my favourite things to listen to him discuss is the difference between business process and business practice, and how we consequently spend too much time on exceptions rather than execution. This is a topic I'm trying to help get coverage in major business magazines. In the true "2.0" spirit, Fast Company is using the power of participation to allow readers to vote on one of their upcoming a [read] Keywords: email ideajam

Made you look. You dirty people. Thanks to Planet Lotus I found out about Gab's posting on new themes that are available for Notes 8.0.1 or later. This is beta, and I've already crashed (on Mac) several times trying to switch into Business Card view in my Address Book, so try it at your own risk :-) [read] Keywords: lotus notes mac planet lotus planetlotus planetlotus.org widgets

I guess I’m done with Jing for the month
Fri, Aug 15th 2008 10:00a   Alan Lepofsky
I just got this in the mail... Dear Jing participant, Your Jing account has reached the monthly bandwidth limit of 2GB. Viewers cannot access any content in your account until your next monthly bandwidth allocation begins. Alternatively, you may purchase additional bandwidth from Screencast.com. TechSmith Corporation I know Jing (the tool) is free, so I understand they have to make money somewhere. Apparently they have chosen bandwidth. Sorry, one customer gone. Email and wikis can get along
Thu, Aug 14th 2008 4:40p   Alan Lepofsky
I think it is wonderful that the whole "2.0" phenomenon has raised the awareness of the value of participation and using shared tools. This is something that Lotus Notes users have known for a decade, and practiced by using Document Libraries, Teamrooms, and Discussion Forums to collaborate instead of email. Unfortunately, that style of working is not as pervasive as it could be, and email is still often used in ways that many not be the most effective option available. Now, it is importan [read] Keywords: document lotus notes application database email wiki

Sumo Equestrian show jumping?
Thu, Aug 14th 2008 10:40a   Alan Lepofsky
I was thinking last night, once the games are done, do any of the athletes try out other sports for fun? Does Yao Ming jump on the trampoline? Does Kerri Walsh jump off the 10m diving platform? Does Michael Phelps kick a soccer ball around? If you could transpose an athlete from one sport to another, what would it be? I was thinking Sumo Equestrian show jumping, but a) that would be just too mean to the horses, and b) sumo is not in the Olympics! [read] Keywords:

Set my desk phone free!
Wed, Aug 13th 2008 9:59p   Alan Lepofsky
I have a new Polycom IP telephone. It has an input jack for a headset, but I was wondering if you know about a way to add a wireless headset, so I can walk around my house instead of being tethered to my desk. I'm thinking there must be some wireless or bluetooth type thing that plugs into the headset jack, and then communicates to the headset. I've found a few that look like they might work, but they have all cost more than $200. Any ideas? [read] Keywords: wireless

Drop What You’re Doing
Tue, Aug 12th 2008 11:19p   Alan Lepofsky
Here is a really cool tip when using Apple OSX: Dropping Text on the Dock for Fast Results. "Lets say you're reading an article on-line, and you read a sentence that you want to email to a friend. Don't do the copy-and-paste thing. Instead, just highlight the text and drag-and-drop it right on the Mail icon in the Dock. It will open Mail and put that sentence into a new mail message." I love this. Unfortunately, Notes does not appear to support this feature. (nor does Apple iCal, Apple [read] Keywords: document notes apple database email firefox skype

What do you use to manage your photos on Mac?
Fri, Aug 8th 2008 1:29a   Alan Lepofsky
So after hours of reading about this on the web, I figured I'd turn to my friends. I am hoping there is a simple program out there for viewing and organizing photos. (editing is a different story) I used Acdsee in Windows, and loved it. Yes, iPhoto is nice, but just like everyone else I've spoken to, I don't like that simply rotating a photo when viewing creates a modified version doubling the photo's disc space. I also don't like the way iPhone structures directories, but I know as a Mac [read] Keywords: apple iphone mac php

I am having a problem managing my day via iCal.app, and I was hoping one of you experienced Mac users could help me. People ask my why Twitter has any business value
Mon, Aug 4th 2008 3:49p   Alan Lepofsky
Early adopters like myself seem to always be defending new technologies. First it was email, then instant messaging, blogs, wikis, virtual worlds, social networking, etc. Now it is Twitter, or more generically micro-blogging. Micro-blogging is a way to quickly express yourself in 140 characters or less. You can ask a question, get something off your mind, say where you are, link to a web site you want to share, and so on. So why would anyone do this? For me, there are two reasons. [read] Keywords: blogging email firefox instant messaging mac networking twitter vmware

So Alan, why did you chose Socialtext?
Wed, Jul 30th 2008 4:33a   Alan Lepofsky
Over the last few weeks, I've been asked numerous times by Lotus customers, business partners, IBM employees, as well as friends and family "Why did you choose Socialtext, and what should I know about them?" Below are the answers. Why did I choose Socialtext? Hopefully when I announced Career 2.0, it was clear that my decision to leave IBM was driven by my desire for change, not by any "issues at Lotus".
