IdoNotes (and sleep)

After numerous cities with the ND8 Upgrade Seminar, where we show how to do numerous things, including upgrading your Domino Directory, in a supported fashion, before the domain is totally finished.  Well one of our wise attendees was following the directions as they have done before, and received some disturbing news from Lotus support:
Having a R8 directory on a 6.5.4 server is not supported.  Problems that can occur are corruption, data loss and performance issues.

What data loss? What performance? What corruption?  We can find no technote, article, posting or nothing that resembles this statement from Lotus Support.

I am upgrading servers and domains like crazy and have not seen a hint of this issue anywhere.  Anyone?

  • 1) Lotus says don’t upgrade from 6.5.4.to 8 ??

I'm with you on this one Chris. Have yet to see an issue as well.

And Lotus usually has a best practice to upgrade the NAB, er Directory first.

    how odd.

I agree. This is strange. I cannot find any technotes / postings / anything!!! that state this. What context was it provided to you in Chris! Keith is right the best practice is to upgrade the DD first.. Well after the administrators workstation! :-)

We have now gotten this from a customer talking to support in the middle of upgrading a couple hundred servers globally. It is stopping the rollout

I researched the individual issue and talked to the author of the technote that started this. It was a misunderstanding. You CAN use a Domino 8 design directory on a Domino 6x or 7x server. Where you get into performance problems is running a Domino 7 design directory on a Domino 8 server per this technote - { Link } Recover from panic, proceed with your upgrades, pls.,....

Although Susan's link goes to an "error document not found"

Hope that isn't down to a directory version mismatch :-)

I'm glad I didn't read this before I upgraded from 6.5.4 - I might have had a problem! Actually I did but it was down to a MS Windows 2003 DNS issue and nothing to do with Domino. I sweated for a bit until I sorted it though.

This will take far more time than I have today. I will start with I was born and still live in St. Louis, MO. No beach/ocean/coast isn't the best. But with the travel I make up for it.
